<blind optimism>
They must have delayed it to add more special features and record new commentaries!

That optimism isn't blind enough!

<fanboy>
They must have delayed it because Fox are about to announce that they're bringing the show back for 3 more season!

Fine, how about this...

<super unrealistic optimism>
They must have delayed it to give time to make 10 seasons of new episodes and print enough copies for everyone on earth because they will be giving them away for free!  With cake!
</super unrealistic optimism>

Really, though... I want cake.

All I've heard is R2 is still expected in May and R1 has, unfortunately, been pushed back indefinitely. No new feature news (outside of what's already known). Sorry I can't add more that that at this point.

OK, all I have to say is one word. Bullshit. I may be ignorant when it comes to these things (I probably am.), but why will Region 1 possibly not get this DVD, or get it late? It's bullshit. Why? Us Region 1'ers are just as good and faithful as those Region 2 people.
Did FOX just screw up Futurama badly in the United States, or was it in other places as well? If they did it either way, they're surely screwing with Region 1. Those money-hungry bastards must know that releases in more places should mean more money. The only way I'd accept this delay, is if there was a new season, or something special planned, or if May is simply a bad month to release it. (Although my new season idea is probably 99.9% wrong. Hell, it's probably 100% wrong.)

Perhaps the sales of the DVDs compared to the cost of promoting them was much higher in Europe and so FOX decided that that would be the best place to target this compilation DVD? There's probably a very sensible business reason for it.

Not that I agree with it, Futurama is surely above such business decisions, and fans everywhere should get the chance to enjoy what's left of it  :(

Crap. I guess I'll just order it from amazon.co.jp and play the Region 2 version on my Region 2 DVD player. I was sooo hoping for a R1 release, though.

Hey, when the Futurama Volume DVDs were released in Europe, how long was it until Region 1 got them? (And I truly hope this doesn't turn into a King Of The Hill Season 3 problem.)

Season 3 of Futurama came out in R1 on March 9th, 2004. Season 4 of Futurama came out in R2 sometime in October of 2003

Bender the robot - or one of his mechanical pals - must have gotten into the DVD factory and sabotaged the release of Futurama - Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection! Formerly set up for a May 10th release, Fox sent out a notice yesterday saying that "The...title has been removed from the May 2005 TV DVD lineup." No reason was given, nor was there any indication of whether this is just a postponement, or an outright cancellation.

We're sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But kick back, drink some Slurm, and relax for now. Stay tuned, and if this title returns to the schedule later on, we'll be sure to tell you.

^I know it's old news, but what the hell? Also, tvtome.com is saying July is a possible date for Region 1, but you can never tell until we have some official information.

This would be one last kick in the teeth if FOX cancelled this DVD. Having said that, FOX HE have been pretty good with the DVDs all round, I'd say they've done a fine job so far.

It is possible that R2 get the DVD first as a trial Run. If it is Successful they will release it in R1 areas and If it is a flop they wont bother making them for R1. Its what happens with many products. I happen to live in a 'trial area' in the UK we get comics and shit like that a couple of months befor everyone else. and they they use us for predicted sales.

i may be wrong, but I think region one is the biggest market, and I dont think they would go through the process of making a new dvd and not introduce it to the largest market.

I could be wrong, but if this comes out in any region, I would guess it'll come out in region 1 format as well.

You all probably know this by the time you read this, but www.gotfuturama.com  announced that FOX formally cancelled the DVD for Region 1.

If we're lucky, then we'll get it in six months to one year. (They calculated that according to the Box Sets release.)

And although I'm disappointed, I agree with what they said. With Family Guy coming back, Futurama will probably be ignored. So when the Family Guy craze dies down, when Futurama releases their DVD (assuming FOX still releases it), then it will get more attention.

so wait $15 is like £10 real money right? hee hee (I'm JOKING!) Futufan as well as being the luckiest damned person in the world cause let's face it, we'd all murder you for your job in a heartbeat. you're also trying to be very informative. So I am gonna try to be informative back as I feel it's the very least I can do instead of kissin your ass in the hopes one day you might tell us what size shoe Ken Keeler takes or some other wacky info ... Mine's the UK (is that Region 2 or something else I havn't paid attention much too because I buy my DVD's AND pay my taxes!) ... Y'know who u lot are ruddy scroungers!!! no wait the other word geniuses!! I don't think Season 1 or 2 are that great DVD menu's as they don't have the play all choice and it's just some background noise with a picture... however Season 3 you were gettin there and Season 4 is pretty damned fine it took me a while to notice (pretty slick) the character's say different things each time you load it up but is it my imagination but are there less easter eggs and goodies in Season 4 (even though Season 4 artwork is best) than in Season 3 (Apologies in advance if this is nothin to do wit u) and was this due to the lack of time and money u mentioned earlier? Ahhhh I've no idea where I was goin with this .... Sod it I'll post it anyway I'm that opinionated! Oh no I remember if you have any input onto this new DVD could you axe if we could have a cast/crew photo gallery (not school picatures) cause I saw Billy West on BBC2 an realised I had no idea what half of the staff loked like. I've found 'em on the net or stalked them with telephoto lenses, so I know now but it would be nice for me and I'm sure for the staff's peace of mind to have it neatly with my own lil Futurama sets. And please don't start hounding FF with wanting photo's of Laren Tom in the shower! I was just puttin an idea forward that u probably couldn't do anythin about even if you could be arsed anyway... There that should alienate me from you all. Kittyminx has no need for friends!!!

Very astute comments Kittyminx ... thanks for the compliments and what not. I have to agree with a lot of what you said. When we started work on Season 1, way back when, the budget was small and animation was not asked of us (I'm assuming that Fox wanted to see if Futurama on DVD would be a worthy investment). I actually tried to push for a Play All button from the very beginning, but, regrettably, wasn't able to convince anyone of it until Season 3 when I just incorporated it into the designs myself. With each subsequent season, we were afforded a larger budget and more freedom with our ideas. I consider myself very fortunate to been given the opportunity to work on all 4 seasons. With a few exceptions here and there, I'm extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish. I can only fantasize what we could have done with a season 5 and beyond -- especially since DXC and some of the voice cast were beginning to get involved during Season 4 and then Season 3 for region 1.

Because I'm going to visit and friend and have had my tickets booked for months :P I never said I was going because the DVD wasn't being released in Region 1. I only mentioned it because this means I will be leaving the country right before the DVD is coming out and for the next month will be in America where they won't have it.

So I won't see the DVD until July!  :(

We should now be aware that a tentative release date is in late August of this year.
My question is, does anyone know whether or not this is for Region 2 (which is most likely), or Region 1? (Which is less likely.)

David X. Cohen tells me that the new US date is now tentatively set to August 23, 2005.

I'm guessing the news update didn't used to specify which region it was for. It's the US anyway  :)

The United States is Region 1. (Or part of it.) In any case this sucks, because I won't be able to watch it over the summer, and it will be released right before school starts, for me. And what a coincidence, it will be released just one date short of when good ol' Volume 4 was released. Oh well, at least it will be released. (Assuming this date is the date it will be released.)

The reason that Region 2 gets it before Region 1 (and this is true for almost all US TV releases) it that in the US there are all sorts of licencing restrictions due to the fact that its being repeated on different networks etc and so every possible avenue for airing the show has to be exhausted before FOX will release it  on DVD.

In Europe there aren't these licencing restrictions so it can be released much sooner.

You guys get Region 1 cinema releases many months before we do and you usually get more extras and are usually cheaper! So it's nice that we actually get something first for a change!

Indeed, Futurama is just about the only show/movie I can think of that we get first.

Oh, and the various Star Trek boxsets often have an extra special feature or two on the Region 2 sets, probably because of the same licensing restrictions in the USA.

I realize that Chug a Bug, but what I mean is if Region 1 gets stuff first, why can't DVD's of shows that were already cancelled (coughcoughFUTURAMAcoughcough) be released here first?
Your explanation makes sense for some cases, but not in this one.

Incorrect. Futurama was released for syndication, i.e. to CN for Adult Swim. I believe it's getting shows syndicated that usually postpones their release on DVD in the States.

Earlier this week the bbfc passed the HIOR animatic with optional audio commentary and the four episode intros:

00:00:39:11 | HELL IS OTHER ROBOTS INTRO
00:00:45:13 | ANTHOLOGY OF INTEREST 1 INTRO
00:00:53:12 | ROSWELL THAT ENDS WELL INTRO
00:00:39:03 | THE STING INTRO

They also passed a short intro for the disc itself.
