We had such a fun weekend at comic-con and the capper was that Bender won "Most Humorous" in the masquerade!  We did a little skit replacing C3PO from star wars with Bender and his in your face interface     :)
(I even heard from one of the judges that we were only 2 points away from winning the "Best in Show" trophy which I did not even think we had a chance at with 51 other entries.

Anyway, here are a few pics that I found on cosplay.com

and there are a few more funny shots of Bender around the con here:  http://www.myalphastation.com/cris/cc04/comicon04webgallery/

if you are not tired of seeing Bender yet...

Dude. You rock. This is San Diego Comic Con, right? Yet another of the many reasons that I regret not being able to go. : le sigh :

haha! That's a great costume! I dressed up as Bender for halloween last year. Exactly ONE person knew who I was. He gave me extra candy.

Congrats on winning!

Now that's a real cool and cute costume  :)

Congratulations for winning the contest  :)

Some people would say now "Ha! Look those crazy fan(atic)s spending their precious lifetime for making costumes and visting cons", but a) those are boring lifeless people and b) they wouldn't say that after having a closer look at my Leela-style-combat-boots.  :D  :laff:

Note to self: I really should try this costume thing once too ... Sadly there are no great cons in Germany ... or are there?

Once in the early 90s (1990 I think) I was dressed as Inka farmer for carneval (sp?). No one had an idea what an Inka is ...  :hmpf:
... and in 1991 there was no carneval party in school - we were to busy demonstrating against US imperialism and the Iraq war ...

*sighs* ... those were the days ...

Congrats! That's an amazing costume. And yeah, I'm with Nasty Pasty--how many people knew who you were (considering it's the Comic Con, I would assume at least a few people would recognize you)?

Makes sense for them to want to have the most popular robots in the world in the group, instead of #4.

Congrats on an award well deserved, Chris.

lol   :)   Thanks alot guys and gals!

Yeah comic-con in San Diego is an awesome time- and I did not run into one person who did not know who I was supposed to be, unlike in Vegas when 1/2 of the people thought I was the "tin man" of all things :/

that poll is funny!  I just heard about it the other day, and it is ironic that we just did a skit with Bender instead of 3PO  :) It went a little like this...

OWEN:
I suppose you are programmed for ettiquete and protocol...

BENDER:
Bite my shiney metal ass.

etc...

anyway thanks again!

Great job Kris! I am building a life-size Bender (statue, not costume) and have many questions as to your costume construction.

How did you make the domed cylinder of the head. Is it an adapted object or scratch built? I guess the same questions apply to the body, hands, feet etc.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks everyone.  It took about a month to put together.  Everything is pertty much made from scratch..and I went into some detail in this thread:
 http://www.peelified.com/cgi-bin/Futurama/4-000624/

about alot of the construction.  the Dome was just made from bent pieces of plastic, and then I smoothed it out with bondo and ALOT of sanding.

the hands are cheesy 3 fingered gloves, the feet- arge salad bowls that would fit over my shoes...etc...

if there is something that I missed in the other thread let me know and I will try to fill in the gaps  :)

Thanks for the info, cris.  VERY helpful to see the insides and other details. I can't believe you even did an "ass-plate"!!!! Wow. A high watermark indeed.

But I HAD to have a shiney ass!

It takes about 10 or 15 minutes to get into it I think.  I can't do it by myself either.  It takes someone else to get the arms on and the head once I am in the thing.

I cannot lift my arms huch higher than drinking level  :)

Amazing!  cris, you'd think this would become less impressive over time, and yet I'm still in awe.

Back in Novemeber, you mentioned in your other thread that you wanted to make a Leela costume for kim.  Have you made any progress on that?

You freakin' rule!

I actually used Kim's iBook (iMovie) to recut that scene from Star Wars and to add the clips from the 3 Futurama episodes.  It would have been cool to have more specific back and forth, but I really wanted to use the real voices.

I put a microphone and speakers in the chest though, so the next day when we were walking around the con I was able to interact with people.  I don't quite have the voice down, but most people got a kick out of "bite my shiney metal ass" which I can do reasonably well  :)

cris---

Very impressed with your work! I've been searching for a "Bender" costume for my dad for next year's DragonCon in Atlanta but have failed.

I came across your picture and was completely "Wowed". If you don't mind, would you e-mail me (sgballard2001@yahoo.com) the recipe to such a creation or at least any advice, hints or tips like how did you do the eyes and cigar? But if this is a trade secret, then I understand even thought I'd still like to know where you got the cigar.  It would just be a great surprise to give to my father if I can put it together.

You'll be lucky if kimncris shows up, haven't seen him since, well, that post above yours...
But this was the main showcase thread, lots more pictures, and a few pages of stuff to see, you might pick up something there.

EDIT : After a slightly closer look at that thread, this post might be what you're after.

Still around now and again, but not often enough to see my threads resurface...

I lost my old host, so I had to re-host many of the pics.
