The only criticism I can offer you is to keep your K out of your CMY when coloring most things, other than that I like your style and look forward to seeing your picture done.

Yea you use too much black in your shadows, especially in your skin tones. There's very little black in the natural world. Even "black" people are just dark brown. I would recommend picking color from the skin itself and putting on a multiply layer to see what a more natural shadow would look like. Skin is usually a mix of red blue and yellow, it has nothing to do with black.

Do you work in RGB or CMYK? Its probably easier to avoid mixing in black if you work in CMYK and convert to RGB when you are done...

I use RGB because it is the default setting and the rest confuses me because I didn't think it mattered.

Your stuff looks great to me, Freako, but then I'm not a professional artist like FJ is.  She's been trained to spot the little things that can make a good art piece from being great.

Maybe not the best place to ask, but FJ did have some sort of contact with The Voices back in the early part of this decade - I've always wondered why he had his art taken down at most places and disappeared.  I've found a few pieces of his stuff on Russian websites and all were fantastic.  I would love to see his old stuff re-appear or even better, a new piece or two since the series is running again.

Any answers that you can share about The Voices, FJ?

Oh yea Tom... Yea we used to "talk" a lot on AIM when I was in college. :laff:
I don't know what he's up to, I just assume he's like me in that we're gone pro.

Yea FF1 if you use the CMYK settings or sliders instead of RGB you can see your color makeup and avoid using K which stands for "blacK" on skin tones. You can always convert from CMYK to RGB but you can't convert otherwise because there are colors like oranges and greens outside the printable spectrum.

Hope that helps your stuff get more vibrant. =)

... and PC monitors use RGB so an image shown on a computer will be RGB anyway. CMYK is intended to be printed on (usually) white paper where the colors you see are reflections of surrounding light reflecting off the paper and back through the ink colors to your eye. A monitor or TV just transmits the colors directly to your eye. If the image from the monitor needs black it just sends no light, if the printed image needs black the white of the light bouncing off the paper has to be blocked by black ink.

Generally a RGB image can appear more "dayglow" at full color saturation levels than a RGB image.

Some program color profiles are pretty sticky. I stopped working with corel Painter because the CMYK profile wasn't the same as Photoshop's and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to load Photoshop's color profile into Painter. My makeshift solution is that I used to work RGB in painter and then convert in photoshop and mess with my selective color to take all the black out =/

Very counter intuitive, that's why I'm painting in Photoshop now.

Yea so work in CMYK and then convert down to RGB and you shouldn't lose any information. Here's an easy way of looking at it. CMYK is like working with paint. The more color you put on, the more it layers up. RGB is the opposite of that, the more color you put on, the lighter the variation gets. Black is the absence of color in RGB so any color information you fail to provide gets miscontrued as black.

Or for the layman, CMYK has four channels for the four inks and RGB has three channels for display, going from three to four makes the program make shit up so you have more control going four to three.

Just remember to convert back to RGB when you're done because some browsers and viewing devices will still hissyfit. I forgot to convert an image once and my gold dragon was blue on my boyfriend's iphone. Very funny when a device is like "OMG 4 CHANNELS DOES NOT COMPUTE"

If you think this is complicated, I've had to add 5th and 6th spot color channels before and that's a story for another day.

And don't get me started on trapping...

... just when you thought .jpg's were just for the web. Yeah, Shop and Paint don't play well together. But then you can have the same file look different in both of those and then different again in Explorer and then different again in MS Picture Viewer. I've found Paint and Explorer are a pretty good match though, if all profiles in paint are set to generic.

Yea for some reason painter uses something other than generic sRGB and their CMYK is way different from SWOP v2.

We are talking about COREL Painter and not MS Paint right? Cause i laff at MS Paint.

Yeah, Corel Photo-Paint. It's my every day bitmap editor. Adobe Photoshop has some great features but I hate the way it manages memory on Windows PCs, it's always on the verge of stalling out or crashing, doesn't like other programs being open, etc. It's a bit of a prima donna.

Edit: I also used to reduce my gamma when painting to get a more accurate representation of white tones that get blown out but it makes EVERYTHING ELSE look like shit. Anyway yea if you haven't noticed I'm very sensitive about color.

This has taken quite a while and I'm still nowhere near done,

Thanks to Morgan, Nutmeg and Leiapad for those reference photos so I could practice my skittles drawing less cartoony people.

I tried to recreate them exactly as they looked and then I laughed when I remembered that they're all fans of a science fiction cartoon.

Freako, I bet you could work for Bongo comics. Probably on the Futurama ones, as shown by your Futurama comic. Anyway, have you had any lessons in drawing, or is it just a natural talent?

FJ, you're a college educated professional artist.  Freako is a kid that is still in high school (or was last year).  He doesn't have your years of education or years of dedication to the artistic field.  For what he was doing, the pics of the three PEELettes came out good.  Very good.

But then your style alone would make the pics different.  Add those years of training and education, your stuff would look totally different.

Sooo, try not to look at the other artists as fellow professionals (like you probably have to on a daily basis) but as people trying to let their "inner Leela's" out and having fun while they're doing it.

As for me and my "talents", I can draw stick figures fairly good...

Anyway, I can't wait to see it finished!!! :D

I believe I said I was far from finished.

Leiapad: I Just find the two syllables better sounding.

willsterdude3000: I'd say it was natural talent but there was a time when I sucked hardcore. But I didn't go to any special classes or schools though.

It's all practise. Just because you might not get any guidance (although I think morgy has been giving you some tips lately?) doesn't mean you can't better at something yourself. After all, the first great artists didn't have any art schools to go to for lessons in super-fanciness. They just had rocks and pigments and sand.

By the way, awesome pic so far.
