Geez, it's been a while. This is one I banged out in an hour, mostly, and it is 1) based on the events of Yonder, 2) inspired by a(nother) song by The Tragically Hip called "The Darkest One", a post on which can be found here (complete with lyrics): http://futurama-madhouse.com.ar/forum/index.php?topic=3195.0

==================================================================
The Darkest One
==================================================================

        The turbulence generated from the ship's penetration of the wormhole was enough to throw every unsecured being to the ground, much less enough to break the liplock. At the point of re-emergence into space, it was not clear if they were trillions of light-years away as the professor had forewarned. Countless, endless stars and space lay before them, although it did not seem as though the beams being fired by the Nimbus were coming from behind any longer.
   As everyone recollected themselves, Leela began to dole out instructions to the rest of the crew to check all relevant spaces to make sure everything was in tact. Even so, she assumed giving orders was a lost cause; everyone on board was either with a significant other with whom they'd sooner canoodle with after all the excitement, or completely useless due to laziness, incompetence, or senility. One by one, the crew members filed out of the cabin, including Fry. He wasn't as quick to leave as everyone else, shuffling his way towards the door at the end of the line. Before passing through, he turned around to consider the love of his life, who was busy making a thorough check of all the meters and controls.
   It had been a long road, hadn't it? For all of the turbulent times they had gone through prior to passing through the wormhole, the times she had blown him off, the times she had taken him for granted, the times she had looked at him as nothing more than an underling, there were times that she had been sweet, doting and grateful for his presence. Fry was never sure which side of Leela was the one that represented her true disposition toward him, because each time she showed either side, she seemed to embody it, fully and completely. Leela's tendency to change faces pulled at his heart and took his emotions to extremes, but nevertheless he plowed on. And now, his resilience had made it all worth it. She loved him. And she had said so.
   Most of all, it had been through that epic battle for her heart that he had gained an understanding of who she was. She embodied a lot of different things. She was wild, her checkered past and her allegiance with the eco-feminists proved that. She was willing to take extreme measures to stand up for what she believed in. She was definitely strong, in her will, in her convictions, and in her ability to kick ass. She had to be. Growing up with no parents (whom she had assumed abandoned her) in an orphanage and never being able to quite fit in, finding love and solace in all the wrong places, lent itself to a certain darkness. That insufferable little leech who had attached itself to Leela may have been one of "the dark ones", but as far as Phillip J. Fry was concerned, Leela was the darkest one of all. And that darkness was precisely why he loved her. After all...
   "Fry!" Leela snapped, shaking Fry out of his reverie. "I said get up to the turret and make sure it's still operational! We're gonna need some line of defense in case the Nimbus is still somehow on our tail." she insisted with that familiar annoyed tone. Her expression softened as her mouth curled into a smile. "Please. Honey."
   Fry grinned and gave a goofy little salute to his captain/girlfriend as he spun around to rush out of the cabin and take care of business. Even though she had to play the role of authoritative boss, he knew he could also take comfort in her love. And he knew, once and for all, that she could embody both of those extremes at once. Even in the midst of this chaos, he felt warm, safe, and heartened; for this - for she - felt like home.
   She was her. That's all he needed to know.

That's a great character study, Tornadoboy--very well-written. And this...

...is adorable.

I love the connections you made to the Fry/Leela romance and the turbulence of the wormhole, as well as the dark one and Leela herself. It's nice to see her through Fry's eyes; I think you did a great job of explaining why, exactly, Fry loves her. Leela often gets a bum rap for the stuff she's done to Fry--which you mention--but I think you justified her behavior perfectly, and it's all the more effective because it's from Fry's point-of-view.

You do good work in an hour. I suggest you rent your services out, offer hour-or-less guarantees, like Dominoes or something. 'Cause this is pretty great work, especially considering the time constraint.

Thanks for the kind words, Gorky. I am glad you enjoyed it. As far as the time it took to write, I wouldn't call it a constraint so much as it was catharsis. It poured out of me, and I don't think I could have stopped it if I wanted! There was no planning, nothing. I started from a blank screen and went until I was finished, although I did come back the next day and added a couple of touches. I wish this sort of thing could happen more often.

AWW!

I loved it! You are a very talented writer! It's very sweet....
I really just want to see what happens after they enter the wormhole, and this is a great introduction! I'd love to see your story continue! Because it might be a little while before we get the real one!

Thanks. :) I don't think I'm gonna add on to this, it's a neat little package as it is. However, I have given thought to doing a sorta-sequel where Leela reflects on Fry in a similar way. Stay tuned!
