You're in a band? Do you play keyboards? That's hot.

I am in a school band. You know, with brass, woodwinds, percussion? I play the trumpet. But I don't play any piano...

Ahh yes, band, I'm so glad I didn't agree to that. Not that I would be any good at band, I only started piano last year.

I made two wallpapers, both are the same just one is colorized, and they are from Into the Wild Green Yonder, so if you haven't seen it, and don't want a part ruined, you shouldn't look. Unless you want to.

Well, here is the next one. It is still a little rough around the edges, but this is the first time that I used the path tool to outline, so I'll try to perfect it more.

Yes, much better work on the curves. Looking good, Smarty.

If I may suggest something else - Work in a larger size. If you scan at a higher DPI, and work on a picture at least twice the size, then when you finish colouring and shrink it down to a more postable size, the jaggies around the edges will smooth themselves out. Of course it means bigger original files, but disk space is cheap nowadays.

So I am starting to get a little bored with my first fan fic art, so I'm taking a break and am now sketching scenes from the one I am working on now. I'm not yet finished, but I have penciled in one already. I just need to outline and color. :p

What do you use to draw? Adobe Image? And do you draw it with a mouse?

Kind of. I draw it in pencil on paper first, then I scan it to the computer, then I outline everything in GIMP, with a mouse. So sort of. If I had a tablet it would be better, and so much easier, but I can't afford one... Oh the dreams... But I think it is better to draw in pencil because I can keep the rough drafts for future reference.

Edit

Actually I got a little interested and searched for some online, and they are really around the 100 dollar area. I should save up...

Here is a rough draft of a new picture, from the beginning of my second fan fiction:

Obviously I need to fix the background stuff, Yancy's hair, etc. But so far I think it came out okay. Now I just need to outline it... ;)

Nicely done. Be careful with the background perspective, though, or it will make the picture look wonky if the lines don't match.

And maybe if you lowered Yancy's pupil a little - at the moment he's looking at Phil's hair, not in his eye.

Nah, looks great. You draw in Groening style really well, which isn't as easy as it looks. I know. I tried. I gave up and went all Manga on everyone's arses.

Thanks guys. I had to draw the background from several shots of their basement, so I need to work on putting it together and fixing the angles, as you said, El-Man. I can't wait to see it when I'm finished.

It isn't really needed, but if you had the time you might consider altering the line of shadow across Fry's face slightly to have it following the contours of his face. You know, up over the brow, around the eye, separating the sides of his nose, etc.

Yeah, its really looking good.

And I know what you mean about sketches. I sorta flip back and forth between traditional and digital sketching, but all of my stuff is finished up on the pc anyway. A sketch is just my way of putting an idea on paper then perfecting it.

Keep that in mind since you do digital. I know that when something is on paper, it can look alright. But using digital, stuff can start looking wonky. Another idea is to flip your work around, having it face the other way. Coz if you're used to drawing one way most of the time (like me ^^;; ) flipping the image can help you see flaws you may have missed.

Sorry, not trying to preach. Stuff looks really awesome. I can't draw in the Groening style and I respect anyone who can.

Yancy and Fry are drawn veeeeeery good. Oh, Smarty, is it true you come in little rectangle cardboard boxes and you're multi-colored? That's where you got your art skills from.

I've made some Groening-style pictures lately, but I'm going to put up some others. When I started I had realistic-versions of the characters. Well now I have learned how to draw. So I have a bit of a different style for them now, and I started with Fry.

Here is the original concept I had for Fry:

Ignore the arm, I was just trying to practice that, and that's one of the best hand's I've drawn. I thought he looked a little like a Fry Pinnochio though, so I scrapped it.

I looked through some quick drawings and found these two, just two random people. I liked the second one a lot and might draw him in the future for non-Futurama reasons, but here they are:

So I decided to combine them. I tried this one with the longer face, but it ended up looking stupid, so I tried the smaller. I'm not completely satisfied with it, but here's the 'final' Fry, and to save space, here's my Leela too.

To me Leela never looks right...but I think she's fine as of now. More pictures on the way!
