behold!
i needed to test out a newly-installed program (or mostly the setup.. or.. well there's not much to do around here.  :p), so who better to draw?
i'm not sure what it is about her, but leela is just ridiculously fun to draw. and i try to keep the sound effects out of it, but hair-shading is practically orgasmic for me.
..too much?

I've been wanting to do a pic of Leela in a good kung-fu pose, and this is the first sketch attempt. However, I'm not sure it's working very well, it just doesn't seem dynamic enough. Maybe the pose is wrong slightly. What's everyone think?

many thanks, fellow briquettes.  :p

el-man: though i self-admittedly fail at anatomy (due probably entirely to my slacking off and not actually studying it much), i know for sure that her lower leg there needs to tuck up and in a bit, out of personal experience..*twists around a bit*
try to keep her butt somewhat more in-line with her chest i think, there's only so far they can twist apart.  ;)
well.. unless that's a full-frontal crotch-shot i'm looking at. in that case, it's quite an impossible position and you wouldn't even be able to see the rest of her (it'd be behind her legs, at least mostly).
(course, i could be completely wrong.)
so yes.. in recap. either tip her upper body back, or tip her legs down/in (take the whole leg section and rotate it counter-clockwise)
and after all that supposing, i would recommend you rather find an actual picture of that sort of pose and work off of that. it's somewhat hard to guess these things. i know - i stubbornly guess at everything and pay. yay!
hope that helps. maybe.. a little?  :)

my brain hurts from too much gazing and pondering.

@El

Might just be my comic book nerdiness poking through, but I see to remember reading that poses like that look more dynamic by showing the follow through rahter than the contact.

That or show the direct impact, that is to say crumpling up Zapp's face with the kick.

So in basic, give the pain to Zapp.

@ Pickels

Nice and the hair does indeed look awesome.

Need more mass given to the lower portion of her left leg, even with foreshortening.

@ Pickles

Actually, I did base it off an actual picture. That really is how you do jumping round kicks, you bring the hip up high to get the height and leverage required. So that is a crotch-shot, but I didn't realise that until I drew it. Until then it was only, 'wow, cool kick'.

@ Wu

That's an idea, do the millisecond after the impact instead of the one before... is not necessarily Zapp in the sketch, just some random chump.

@ Coldangel

Agree, had spotted that.

But I don't think I'll continue with this as is. The viewing angle isn't a good one, and angling Leela's body back will see most of her disappear. Not that Leela's rear isn't worthy of showing off, but that's not the kind of picture I was going for. And this ain't TTP either...   :D

Well, this is my latest from the "Godfellas" episode (one of my faves). I am suffering international travel withdrawal symptoms and so be it... I do travel international in May, but it is way too  long to wait!  I hope to get someday to the country shown (yup I read National Geographic for March)  :)  , but I cannot yet afford the USD$250 plus  a day for the Bhutanese tourist permit, but one can hope.  I had to put in bad Photoshop stuff to hide my southpaw writing, which was hard to read. Hope it suffices... and I hope I get to Bhutan someday, but probably not this way...
Hope I am in this picture one day...

Behold my Boop!

I drew this for my boss. Hey, never hurts to suck up right? She didn't even know i was drawing it and was most pleased when i presented it to her today. The coloring is better than the scan shows. It's not all uneven in real life.

Bugs looks melty and Tweety looks demonic. The other three look okay though.

Oh please, Bugs is suppose to look melty, intelligent, cocky, superioristic and all other emotive ways, so you're on target with him.  Just consider Bugs the James T. Kirk of the Warner Universe.

And Tweety - the little bastard has always been demonic.  He enjoys the torments the poor, starving puttycat suffers trying to make a meal out of him.

As for Betty Boop - very good job.  I don't think I've ever seen a color pic of her since she was big back in the days of black and white films.

@ FordMustang:

You can almost see the disgust in Leela's face in your pic.  I guess she's close to telling Fry, "If I freeze to death, place me in a dignified position, none of this huddled-up-for-warmth crap!"

Great images, Venus.  Your coloring is magnificent.  You do such fun work with cartoon characters.

@Sick pickles- thanks for the mule and signage comment.  Trying to find "Welcome to Bhutan" in Dzongkha was tough.  I think mules are more dependable than horses and get a bad rep.  Some of them can also grow really long manes like horses have.

@TornadoBoy- interesting you are studying Bhutan. It is a lot in the news these days with the King now changing the monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.  I hope they stay the enlightened course and that I win the lottery so I can afford a tourist permit.

@Ralph Snart- You know, you are right when I think about your Leela comment.  I actually was trying to capture bewilderment on Fry and Leela's part at the "Gross National Happiness" Index signage but I think Leela was not enjoying the trip that much, either.

Yup, good eye on you there, Sick Pickles!  I was trying to go for how an actual Himalayan expedition would look with Fry and Leela using alpine walking poles and not being able to wash up regularly and all that (and with a mule added in, of course).  I have not been lucky enough to get to the Himalayas,  but I have been on enough highland backcountry expeditions that most guys  (even the ones who are usually clean shaven) wind up giving up on shaving because it actually works against them to shave daily in such conditions-  your skin dries out with the wind, sun, sun bouncing off glaciers,  and high altitude, guys who shave too often  actually wind up with some pretty nasty abrasions that get problematic down the road if not treated , so it is better to let the beard grow out and shave when they get back to civilization. I think in that episode on TV, Fry was unshaven as well (kinda sporadically, I admit,  but it was shown there).  I tried to go realistic on Leela as well with her hair as a braided ponytail  instead of in the usual pony tail because in that setting if you have long hair, you want it braided so it does not get windblown.  If worn in a pony tail or loose it gets sweaty and tangled up so you have a really nasty time trying to comb it out in the evening since it knots up badly otherwise.  So there you go... Not at all.  With that picture, I can certainly see how the hair-shading is orgasmic.  I would like to believe I get a similar feeling just from looking at it.  :)

Nice picture mustang.  With your style, the detail seems to bleed together and fade.  It's there, and you know it's there, but you have to spend time looking for it.  I think the banner on the right would have been better if you had drawn it out instead of using digital text though.  I don't know, I could be wrong.

Venus, nice Looney Toons drawing.  I see what you mean by melty... I think Bugs is off angle or skewed just a little, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is.  Great drawings none the less.

Nice comments!  As for time to think about this stuff, in real life I never have time to think of this stuff at work and only a bit in the evening at home. The only way it affects me in real life is in writing out the travel itineraries and packing lists for our clients because I want them to bring the right stuff on their trips.  I love the adventure travel, though, because I then do finally have downtime time to think of it while slogging through the wildernesss.  When you are going miles and miles on foot or on a pony through rough wilderness terrain and not seeing a shower for days and staying in simple mountain cabins your world view changes and you  have lots of time to think of trivia and details- and that is great therapy since you cannot do it in real life.    I think that is part of the reasons I like this type of travel- it can be uncomfortable, but you can do some great soul searching you would never be able to do in the everyday life.

Yup, the scantily clad babes would never survive this type of trip.  I love the artwork the guys do of such ladies, but if they (said guys) tried to do the same trip dressed in those clothes of their heriones they would probably change their opinion pretty fast... hee hee. I did like that some recent Red Sonja comics showed our heroine going into the mountains dressed slighty more sensibly for the task than a leather bikini (warm
leather cloak and boots and leggings over the bikini) , so I applaud the realism.

@Winna, thanks for the comments- I am still new to all this so my scanning probably diminishes the detail I wanted to do.  I did just learn to wrap text the right way so hopefully future signs will look better.  If you saw this picture with my real handwriting , I imagine it would be very scary... probably it would be seen as some cross between the Kama Sutra and the Joy of Cooking.

I wasn't saying anything negative about the quality of your picture.  It was more of a strange compliment... all the details seem to be implied, and there's a lot of detail in it, in your style.  Like hidden treasures waiting to be discovered, it's quite fascinating.  :)

Another older pic with me trying to teach myself more Photoshop  techniques. I had some fun imagining that off the film set the Futurama characters (Amy, Leela and Fry) could be indulging in some fiction that is totally against their character images.  It is way out of proportion to me, but it is earlier stuff. Hope I improve down the road- anyway, the thought Leela would be into Home and Garden type of media was worth it...

I just am flattered that all of you would comment on my art.  Thank you for your open minded comments...
