Part five

“YAY!” cheered Sam and Jess, jumping up and down in excitement. Fry and Leela leapt apart, suddenly remembering the presence of the children. Leela’s face flushed with embarrassment and she ran for the door, barging straight past Bender and out of the apartment. Fry watched her go, and the realisation that his only chance of happiness was slipping away kicked him into action, making him chase after Leela in blind panic.
“LEELA WAIT!” he hollered as he charged past Bender, knocking him down, and ran out. Bender slowly picked himself up and dusted himself off.
“What’s up with the meatbags now?” he asked flippantly.
“They’re in love,” replied Jess simply.

Leela raced through the moonlight New New York streets, not sure where she was headed, just wanting to get away. She couldn’t believe what had almost happened back at Fry’s apartment, she’d almost fooled herself that her and Fry could work, that he could love her. Fool, how could Fry love a monster such as she, a one eyed mutant, a freak. These thoughts rushed through her head as she thought back to her past. The jeers and taunts of other, normal, children, the bitter loneliness that had expanded past her childhood and into her adult life. She thought of Sean, of how she should have realised that she would never be enough for a man, how the betrayal had cut her right to the core. She thought of Zapp, how she had been just another conquest, another night of fun to play with, and how humiliated she had been the morning after. She thought of Alkazar, how she had been duped into playing the part of a housemaid and night time entertainment for him, how desperate she had been to find someone like her, anyone like her, even if they treated her like crap. She thought of Chad, another high-ranking official who was a scumbag, but she had been too blinded by glamour to see it.

Then she turned her thoughts to Fry, sweet, stupid, lovable Fry. The only one who kept after her, even after constant rejections. The only one who actually cared about her enough to risk his life to save hers, who cared enough to stay by her side through everything. He didn’t just want to get lucky either; he’d past up a chance to, just to see if she loved him for him. He had given up fame and fortune for her, and she had thrown it back in his face, yet he still kept trying. Why did he keep trying? Could he possibly love her, could he really be different from men who on the surface seemed better than him? If she looked deeper would she see that she was all he needed to be happy? Most importantly, could she love him? The questions spun around her head, making her dizzy and faint, yet still she kept running. Running from the hurt and pain of the past, running from the uncertainty of the future, running away from her life.

Fry chased after Leela, sure that his and her happiness hung in the balance, he had to catch her. He loved her more than he thought possible, the beautiful one eyed goddess that enchanted him and filled his mind with nothing but her. The way her hair shone in the sun and glisten if she’d been caught in the rain. How her eye sparked when she was angry, how is sparkled when she was happy, or clouded over when she was sad. Fry hated seeing her eye cloud over, hated seeing her sad, and he’d do anything to make her happy. Her smile made him feel alive and made the blood coursing through his body to go faster. He wanted to be there for her, to heal her pain and protect her as best he could. He loved her but could she love him? Would she let him be there for her? Could he be what she needed? Fry didn’t know, but he knew there was only one way to find out. Fry ran on.

Fry saw her in the distance and picked up his pace, determined to find the answers to his questions.
“LEELA WAIT, PLEASE!” he called desperately, his feet pounding the floor as he thundered after her. She kept going, if anything, she moved faster. Fry called again.
“LEELA, WE NEED TO TALK, STOP RUNNING AWAY!”

Leela heard Fry calling to her, yelling for her to wait. She was confused, why had he followed her? She sped up, not knowing what to do. She heard Fry call again, saying that they needed to talk, telling her to stop running away. Leela considered for a minute, and then stopped.

Fry saw Leela stop moving and sighed in relief, she ran fast. Moving quickly in case she changed her mind, Fry closed the gap. Moving behind her, Fry took hold of her arm and span her round, expecting anger for him following her, or for her to yell at him. What he didn’t expect however, was for Leela to burst into tears.

Part six

Fry was in frozen in shock, as Leela broke down. Her eye was clouded over and the tears were falling freely, her body shook and she looked on the verge of collapse.
“Leela?” Fry whispered, the unasked question hanging in the air.
“I’m gonna be alone forever!” she sobbed. Fry’s face flooded with confusion.
“No you’re not, I’m here with you now aren’t I?”
“But you’re gonna leave me like everyone else,”
“Why would I do that?”
“Because I’m ugly!” yelled Leela completely dropping all her defences. Fry had no idea why she though she was ugly, and he had no idea what to do, so he did what came naturally. He hugged her and let her sob into his shoulder.
“You are not ugly, you’re my beautiful one eyed goddess,” Fry murmured softly into Leela’s ear, gently stroking her hair which had come out of its ponytail as she had run. “You enchant me; I could never leave you,”
“But you will Fry, everybody does,” insisted Leela in between sobs.
“Not me, I promise you Leela, I will never leave you,”
“You can’t promise that, want if something happened, what is you…died?” asked Leela, her voice catching on the last word.
“I will never leave you,” Fry simply repeated. “Even if I died I still wouldn’t leave you.”

Fry and Leela stood there hugging in the moonlight, neither saying a word, just enjoying being with each other. Leela rested her head against Fry’s chest and sighed contently, the motion of his hand stroking her hair had a soothing affect on her, and slowly, she began to stop crying.
“I’m sorry Fry,” she apologized quietly.
“What for?”
“For running out back at you apartment, I just panicked,”
“It’s okay,”
“No it isn’t, you said you love me and you said wonderful things to me and I didn’t believe you. I should’ve trusted you, the same as I should’ve asked you about that woman after the opera,”
“It’s okay, I understand Leela,”
Leela sighed again, “Maybe we should get back the kids will be waiting,”
“Yeah,” agreed Fry, still not letting go of Leela, “Do you think we really will have kids?”
“I suppose, would it be a problem?” said Leela, lifting her head to look into Fry’s eyes.
“No, like I said before, I’ve always wanted a family. At least, I have since I met you. What about you, would you want a family?”
“I never really thought about it. I didn’t have my family when I grew up, but I like to think I could be a good mum if I had children,”
“But would you want children?”
Leela was quiet in thought for a moment before answering.
“Yeah, if I were with you then I would,”
Smiling, Fry slowly released Leela.
“Good, now let’s get back.”

Awww that's so romantic! I actually cried when I read that.

Great story! I'm a little slow in finding it but now I'm up to date! Jess seems really cool! Did you say how old exactly Sam and Jess were?

And just randomly, can someone please tell me what TOTPD means? I'm guessing Top Of The Page D....?

This thread has been up only 4 days, and it has three pages of responses already.  My threads, on the other hand, are lucky to get one or two responses per week.  I guess I have to write something "shippy" to get the attention of the people here, eh?

Seriously, it's beginning to look like the sole purpose of this site is to obsess and gush over the Fry/Leela pairing.  Sure, they belong together, but is it necessary to belabor the point by writing dozens and dozens of F/L fics?  I have plenty of story ideas, all of which have little or nothing to do with Fry and Leela getting together.  If the people on this site have no interest in such stories, then tell me now, so I can stop wasting my time and effort.

Relax bro, fanfics are suppose to be for fun, it shouldn't matter if you get less attention than other stories.  And besides if people want to read about Fry and Leela's relationship, let them be, it just shows you want the audience wants, and thats what it boils down to...you writing the story for you or your audience?

I'm writing for an audience that isn't too busy gushing over every "shippy" fic that comes along to pay attention.  Maybe I've picked the wrong audience.

Well personally: I love shippy stuff!

But that doesn't mean other fics can't be good. I just haven't read many of them and romance is great for storylines.

Yea don't worry, there'll be a much larger audience once the new futurama season kicks off.  But I believe most people read the shippy fanfics is because thats where the show left a void for the viewers, they want to see Fry and Leela together but they haven't gotten it yet so they must get it somewhere else.

Dead Composer - Try doing what I do; write a *real* story, and then insert a random romantic scene or two. That way you can cater to both facets of the audience.
