I'm slowly working on a life size Bender statue.  Eventually, I hope to animate him and get him to talk. Still a long ways from completion though.

For perspective, I used a small Bender robot I bought online.  So far it's worked pretty well.  I have a blog http://www.floridarobot.com/b9/  that details my robot projects.  Bender's progress is buried in the posts.  Since my attention span is so limited, I'm working on 4 robot / monster projects at once (Life size C3PO, B9 Lost in Space, and Creature).

The Bender project was harder than I originally anticpated.  Almost everything I used to make him has been things laying around my garage.  Here's a picture of his current state.

Thanks all for the enthusiastic comments.

It's funny because when I look at my Bender, I see my favorite popcorn bowl (top of head), a ping pong ball that I retired after getting beaten (top of his antenna), the plastic Christmas tree stand we used last Christmas (his neck), and my old radio shack microphone (antenna base).  And some of the wood I garbage picked from a neighbor.

Hah, stealing wood is definitely something Bender'd do. I would have never known that you used those materials because of the way you crafted it.

How long building?  a couple of months but I'm working on 4 projects at once because of my extreme ADD (attention deficit disorder).

Last night I started working on the poseable arms using heavy guage wire as the base.

Thanks.  I'm in the home stretch of this project and hope to have him complete this weekend or possibly next weekend.  Here's the latest picture of him (with his arms removed because he's being painted) http://www.floridarobot.com/b9/index.php?m=20060427

My wife figured out how to get a removable cigar to work.  We're going to put metal behind the mouth and put a magnet in a cigar.

I also need to find or make a plastic beer bottle because the hands are removable and I don't want a bunch of broken glass when they occasionally fall off.

But I have 2 questions for the group about Bender.
1.  On the top of the antenna, what color should the ball be?  I have it white now.  Don't other colors have different meanings regarding his emotions?
2.  Does anyone have recordings of Bender's sayings  in mp3 or wav format?  I need to build a voice module and will probably just record these from shows.

This is very cool. What you thinking of doing with it when your done? Just keeping it? I think that would be the best option cos' you don't really want to sell something you put a lot of hours into. But keep up the good work :D

I still think this is far past awsome!! I wish I were good with my hands so I could create something cool I guess I am cursed with stupid fingers. Well done so far it would be so cool if it talked that would be awsome know what would be even cooler though if you could have it do a flaming burp that would be the greatest bbut sadly that's impossible. GREAT WORK SO FAR!!!!! I think I may idolize you!!

Thanks for the encouraging words.  No I don't plan on selling Bender.  He's going to live happily ever after in our home with the other robots and star wars Jawa.  Although my son has threatened to kidnap him next time he has a party.  I'm down to the final details and made a magnetic cigar for him today.  This weekend he'll have his first beer : )

Bender's caused a bit of trouble around here this weekend.  You might say, a bad influence on the other robots and creatures.
