whoa hold on their noobie.  The fan art/fiction thread is notoriously slow, so it takes awhile to get responces.  Plus, there's not much room for discussion in this topic.  Just be patient and someone will respond

anyway, welcome to PEEL  :)

Leela looked about 5 in that one picture of her in "X-Mas Story".  At the age of 5, kids are still losing their teeth, and Leela had braces then.

In the flashbacks from "Leela's Homeworld" we see a teenage Leela with braces.  Kind of makes you wonder when she got them.  My guess is, she probably had them from the time she was 5 to 14.

Or it was a continuity error. They've made mistakes regarding Leela's childhood before. Plus people never have braces for longer than like 2-3 years. So she would not have had them for 9 years. Dental technology will probably not go that far backwards.

Well I think that they just did it to make her look younger. But also she could have had to have gotten braces more then once in her life. I'm sure it could happen.

People can and often do have braces for more than 2-3 years. I had them for 3, but my sister for *6*. 9 is a bit of a stretch though, but more than that my question is "who paid for an orphan to have braces?" The orphanarium can barely afford food.  :)

What's this doing in the fanwork forum, anyway?  Is it a request, or did NotHAPPY! post a pic and someone snuck into my browser and adblocked it?

And yes, she is adorable.

Yay! People did reply! Thank you. Do any of you know where I could get a picture of her (on the internet) with braces, so I could put it on my desktop?

She looks so cute (and adorable), I agree.

You have good taste.

Bender had braces, too!  Just look at him in that episode, "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles".  Wonder if Fry had them as well?

The age discrepancy can be a result of Leela's mutant genes, maybe she grew from childhood to adolescent in 1 or 2 years.

Perhaps Leela had braces twice: once at 5-6 on her baby teeth, to try to train her adult teeth to grow straight, and once as a teenager when it became clear that the strategy wasn't working.

And what do you mean, braces are too expensive?  They have invisible braces now; in the future, no doubt they have ways of instantly fixing your teeth while you wait.  Only an orphan would be poor enough to have to spend years with a primitive metal grill in their mouth.

I guess it would be Leela's luck to have to go through braces twice.

Well, considering the mouth alignment on her paternal side, she's probably lucky she only had to wear them twice...

:) Don't you get braces for free if you NEED them now anyway? Plus maybe her parents found some that had been 'flushed'...

Ah...

NO!

At least, not unless you're living in a country with socialized medical care - And then, only if it's medically necessary.

That is, do you need braces because your smile is crooked, or because your teeth are so grotesquely misaligned that you can't eat?

The latter is medically necessary, the former is not.

I'm in the US, and we don't have socialized medicine here (yet! Thank God!), so I'm not the best person to say.

Perhaps some P.E.E.L.'s in Canada, or the U.K. would care to comment?
I'll just ooze back out under the door now...  :hmpf:

I live in the UK, and I got free braces. And my teeth weren't that grotesquely misaligned, just a bit wonky.

Uh, that's all...

Thank you.
Being in the US I've no clue about U.K. health care.
I blame it on a biased media!  :D

Soooo, presuming NNY healthcare is similar to present U.K. healthcare, it's more likely than not that Leela could've received "free" braces?

Perhaps the braces were included in the orphanarium health plan... but I don't really know. Probably the braces are just a marker, for it is a thing that many kids and teens in America have or used to have - they are saying "this is Leela in her teens". In Germany at leat, braces are not nearly as common as in the States, or so it seems. I was asked if I wanted to have some as well, but I refused - my teeth are not that badly deranged.

The orphanarium can't have been all that bad, if you think about it - Leela was able to afford some decent clothes, she had kung fu lessons and the health care allowed her to have braces, a contact lens and a monocle. I guess the Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium (now Bender B. Rodriguez Orphanarium) tends to invest in the future of the kids, not in the orphanarium itself. Still, I guess she had a hard time being very different...

It must have been hard growing up the way Leela did. She had almost no friends until she met Fry.

Anyway, I live in the UK and I'm getting braces for free. Plus, I only started this to discuss how ADORABLE she looked, not on Uk heathcare. But thanks he he.

Maybe she could've had braces for that long. A friend of mine had her braces 4th-8th grade. Roughly four years. If one's teeth are that bad, yeah, you need 'em longer.... She was pretty cute and still is.
