This isn't really a fanart and I'm sure I'm gonna get a lot of crap for this, but does it sometimes bother you when the contents of a cartoon's eye is just a little black dot?  I mean, sometimes I think if I were the animator I'd give them irises as well. (Obviously it's much easier to animate a little black dot and be able to flick it around---I'm aware of that.)  Anyways I put a couple of framegrabs into my paint program just as an experiment to see how natural-looking I could get Fry and Leela's eyes to look.

Please don't shoot me!!

No crap to be given by me - it's just Groening's style to have pupils only.  I rather like the idea of having Amy with brown eyes, Fry with green or hazel eyes and Leela's eye to match her hair.  Oh my, and the Professor's eyes to have that milky-white cataract color (I'm sure that cataracts were cured after after 2443, the second coming of Jesus)but have we ever seen the Professor's eyes?  He's always wearing those redicuously thick glasses.

The black is the whole point of cartooning, it gives it a more cartoony look. I put a shine into the eyes on some of my fan art and it can look kinda strange. Thats why the eyes on my avatar seem a little strange.

Not a bad attempt, no crap from me, but if you want it to look a bit more realistic, then you should make the entire eye bigger. But then again, you would have to make the whole face bigger. Lets just leave it to Matt  ;)

Even Groening gives "other than the standard black pupil" when neccesary. Case in point - Bender's square pupils, Zoidberg's whacked out pupils in Crustacean in Love, even Bart and Millhouse's in the ep where they ate the all syrup slushie.
Or even "the pupil must never even be seen" in the case of the Professor.

If you want to get technical, that "shine" is called the catch light. Sometimes when people draw, they don't put the catch light in the same spot for both eyes. That makes the them look really wacked out, it would be like having the pupils looking off in different directions.

In general, I agree that just the pupil makes it more cartoon-esque. That doesn't bother me as much as their size, sometimes they just look too small.

I agree; it didn't look quite right to me either.  I should have done a scan first.

The way photobucket resized the file is crappy btw, I put tiny gold flecks in Fry's eyes and I can't even see them.  Leela's eye came out looking not half bad though.
