Yes, yes, I'm mostly new to this pert of the forum, but a week or so ago, I asked myself "why haven't you made a 3D Bender yet, arsehole?". "I... don't know... ", I replied, and whipped myself into giving it a shot.
Now, the model is still very much WIP, but I have a couple of teasers for you if you'd like to see.

First off, the shot I posted in Offtopic- an unlit render of the initial model:

Next is an unlit application shot of the slightly remodelled (and mostly shaded) Bender:

I redid the head a little to give him the overbite. Other additions are obvious...

As you can see, the angry-eyes aren't fixed. I even made it so that they can be animated on-the-fly simply by using the rotate tool.

Final shot for now- rotated a little to show the shape:

...and as I told Futuramafreak a few hours ago on MSN:
"I need the arms, hands and legs... then it's done, modelling-wise... then comes animation and possibly accesorizing him (E.g. Olde Fortran and other stuff for the chest compartment.)
The best thing about my 3D Bender is that every part of him can be manipulated, meaning that I set up the geometry and pivots so that everything moves like on the show, right down to the pupils. You can open the "teeth", push the antenna down and even pop out his eyes (or remove the whole section, just like when Fry used Bender's eyes as binoculars in Roswell That Ends Well). Some of *EDITED OUT DUE TO OFFENSIVENESS OF A SPECIFIC KIND* ... I decided that I would pay attention to detail."

So I will be rigging him for animation, though I don't know if this'll yield any movies or anything, since it's mainly for posing.
That will be all, thank you very much.

Nice job! How people can make these models is absolutely beyond me, so you get a big thumbs-up from me. Looking forward to hands and all that jazz.

Looking good. Many Bender models are a bit off in proportion, but not this one. :thumbs up:

Great job so far, Pikka. I can't wait to see the finished product.  3D art always amazes me, I don't know how you do it.

Copied from the "talent" thread in offtopic:

Roughly done, I suppose. I had a little time to work on him, so I got the basics overwith. Now I need some fine tuning of the CVs and rigging it for animation (the fingers are gonna be a drag, dammit!). C&C in order, people...

(also, more shots and possibly animation to come some time)

Totally cool! Make sure you let us see some animation! How do you get started with that kind of art anyway? I mean where did you first get that motivation?

First of all, thanks for the positive comments, though I have to say that I feel like I rushed the arms, legs and hands a lot. Now why would I feel that? Because it's true. I whipped them up because I realized I had a deadline for something and I wanted to include a shot of my Bender model. I will redo them sometime.

Well, it's not all that complicated. I like computer games. I like building user maps for some of them. When you start out with the Build engine (the one 3D Realms created for Duke Nukem 3D) and learn to fudge around with it in order to work around its serious shortcomings, you actually find actual 3D modelling to be somewhat liberating, although there are tons more to keep track of. I went from making maps for Duke3D to making maps Unreal and Unreal Tournament, which uses some kind of bastardized version of Alias Maya. So the change wasn't all that severe.
If some of you are interested, there is a great 3D application out there called Blender, and you can get it from Blender.org. It's a basic, lightweight program (around 7 MB for the entire thing), but you can find loads of additional stuff to enhance it with, so you don't wind up with a load of functions that you never use.

*bump*

I need some suggestions for accesories. My current to-do list is:
  • Olde Fortran bottle.
  • Cigar.
  • Rust (probably just a brown bump-mapped material that goes around the mouth).
  • Bomb (from War is The H-Word).
  • Wheels (from War is The H-Word).
  • Small blue car (from A Head In The Polls).
  • Tutu (from Raging Bender).
  • Leotard (from Raging Bender).
  • Boxer shorts (from Raging Bender).
  • Apron (from Bender Gets Made).
  • Wifebeater (from Bender Gets Made).
  • Tommy gun (from Bender Gets Made).
  • "Penguin suit" (from The Bird-bot Of Ice-Catraz).
  • "Napoleon hat" (from The Bird-bot Of Ice-Catraz).
  • Medals (from The Bird-bot Of Ice-Catraz).
  • Leela's jacket (from The Bird-bot Of Ice-Catraz).
  • Lucky x-ray specs (from How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back).
  • Sun visor (from How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back).
  • Disc slot in the back of the head (from How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back).

Please observe that I am far from certain about most of these. Some may prove too difficult and bothersome.

@Cap'n: Actually, wooden Bender is pretty easy, since I don't even have to build the domed bits (footcups, feet). The wooden texture will be a bitch, but the rest should be easy enough, including the branches and all).

@Kloudes: Your suggestion reminds me- I might make a complete X-mas special edition re-haul. The jester hat is on the list also.

The piano is a good one, and also the jack in the head, though I might only use it for close-ups and other special things...

Benderbrau and Express suit- I will have to check the DVD to see how this'll fit into the graaand scheme of things. I might to the "pregnant" Bender, now that I think of it. That should be easy.

I don't know if I will be making interiors as well, but don't count on it. Maybe I'll de the PE building sometime, but it's a long shot.

Of course it is... The thing is- I can't really remember how the suit looks. Unless it's the blue shorts and the yellow cap. In that case, it should prove to be no biggy. The Benderbrau is just a bottle, but was there a specific label that went with it?

I think the suit was blue with a yellow strip somewhere and the hat is yellow. The Benderbrau label was the word "BenderBrau" and a pic-a-ture of bender on it.
