This is swerving into off-topic territory, so I'll have my two cents say before the Mods come down on us - I will only make this post - any reponses and I'll make a thread in the Off-Topic area:
As a former Trauma ICU/ER RN, I've seen a lot. Most injuries that come into the ER's from violence are not firearm related; people will use anything - bricks, sticks, pots, pans, tin cans, etc. to injure others. Granted, firearms can do much more damage from a distance than say, a knife, but both can be lethal.
To Venus: All outlawing firearms would do is take them out of the hands of law abiding citizens that want them for protection (like me).
To Shiny: The idea for having registration and training courses for firearm ownership is good and valid, but once again, only the law-abiding citizens would abide by it.
As for minors getting to firearms and killing themselves, I was born in the south and my dad taught me how to shoot when I was 7 years old. I knew from a VERY early age that the guns in the house were not to be touched by me, and when I was 7, I got my first .22 cal single shot rifle. My dad taught me the importance of respect for the firearm, the damage that it could do and to always be careful with it. Granted, we lived in Hartsville, SC where the KKK ran rampant until the mid-70's and they were burning school buses in 1972 when the SC ruled for forced intergration. My dad was 1/2 Cherokee Indian, my mother full blooded German, so my family was VERY POPULAR with the local townfolk. The only reason that our house was not burned down (we did have a cross burned in our front yard one night - ah, the memories) and my family still alive is because of firearms.
The gist of what I'm saying is; fireamrs are tools - if someone uses a firearm in the commission of a crime, they should immediately get life in prison, and if they kill somebody with the firearm (outside of self-defense), then they sould get the death penalty.
That's my opinion - if we wish to discuss this futher, I'll start a thread in Off-Topic (unless the Mods or Marc don't want it - there are several areas on the net that cater to this type of discussion).

Wowzers! I just spent, like over an hour to read those stories , but I'm a slow reader ) I had the soothing sound of Greenday and The Killers to help me to get through it, although I did cry a bit at one bit, and I'm not a person to actually cry whilst reading or watching summit, I only just feel really sad inside. So your story and Goodnight Mr Tom are the two stories to make me cry. <Zapp> Brave-o, Oncore! </zapp>

Oh, Venus, you mustn't let that worry you...some people are just gonna go there no matter what their fandom is, and there hasn't been a character in all of fiction that someone hasn't written sex stories for. It used to bother me a lot, too, but I finally realized that it's NOT about the characters themselves, it's about the people doing the writing. Some people just see things more...sexfully than others. It's part of their world-view. You don't have to go there if you don't want - your worldview is your own. Take care, Shiny

I realized that long ago when I first heard there was Gilligan's Island slash fiction in the world... Writer's block sucks. Truer words were never written! To the Writer's Block Anti-Muse: We say a hearty ! Begone, foul varlet, from Venus's brain! Venus, dear, if it helps, I had Hurricane Katrinarita inspired writer's block until a week ago (Houston variety), and now I'm 75% done with the next bit of my story...when the Block lets you go, it sometimes releases a flood of new stuff. Like the newly repaired levees over in New Orleans bursting under Rita's rains...(augh, I can't get away from those darn storms...please, someone give me some imagery that doesn't have to do with eye of the storm or up to the eaves in floodwaters or eyes like boarded-up windows or something... ) Do not despair. Sometimes writer's block is just keeping the lid on the boiler while your subconscious pressure-brews the next bit of the story. (Gee, maybe I should take back the one-finger salute...naaah! Writer's block STILL sucks!) Hang in there, Ve....we love you!

Originally posted by Venus: Well. Odds are i'm gonna get hit by a cat 5 hurricane on Saturday. hopefully i don't die. Cause then you guys will never get the end of the story. Although if the power goes out it may give me a chance to get writing again. I sat thru hurricane Hugo (cat 4) when I lived at Myrtle Beach, SC back in 1989. That's the main reason that I moved away from the coast (Now I just have to endure FEET of snow during the winter). Stay safe.
