News of Season Three of Strangers with Candy being released on DVD, a Strnagers with Candy theatrical movie this winter, and comedy Central rerunning Strangers with Candy two-to-four times a week has reminded me how much I love this comedy team and everything they're responsible for. Paul Dinello, Amy Sedaris, and Stephen Colbert (of the Daily Show and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law) starred in the Exit 57 sketch comedy show which was about as bizarre as Kids in the Hall when it came to sketch comedy. When Exit 57 was cancelled they came back with Strangers with Candy, a t.v. show spoofing teenage dramas and afterschool specials, starring Amy Sedaris as a middle-aged ex-junkie and prostitute going back to high school and her stepmother and comatose father in the small town of Flatpoint. Strangers with Candy was going to have a fourth season until a new executive at Comedy Central said she didn't like it and wanted to replace it with her own genius idea: A show about a cat pissing on things to mark its territory. I wish I was joking.
Both shows have a huge cult following and both have inspired me and produced some of my favorite quotes:
Paul Dinello's "My Woman Left Me For a Guy Named Jesus" song in Exit 57.
"I'm not adopted and I'm not an Indian. It's just a coincidence that I have a love of gambling and booze and a knack for catching syphilis." Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank in Strangers with Candy.
"I'm an obtuse man, so I'll try to be oblique." Principal Onyx Blackman
"All right, anyone who doesn't not want to avoid passing the midterm exam, raise your hand now. Okay. Those of you who raised your hands will fail, as you requested." Stephen Colbert as Chuck Noblet
"Some have called me a coward, but others have called me a pussy." Paul Dinello as Mr. Jellineck
"My whole teaching career is a farce, wrapped in a masquerade, smothered in a facade frosting." Mr. Jellineck
