I'm not saying that at all.  I have no problem with ripoff characters, as long as they're funny.  The AD pilot is not funny.  (OK, I laughed at the Memento line, but otherwise...)

Now it is just a pilot.  Hopefully they can turn it around.  All I'm saying is that that one six-minute clip sucked.  No more, no less.

I just caught the 6 minute pilot online, and oh my god that was lame.  So lame it might qualify as "lamerz!!1"  The whole German-fish thing seemed incredibly forced, and once again brings up the whole "can the rest of the family understand him?" theory about Stewie.  The son was Artie Goldman from Family Guy, just somehow worse.  The daughter and mother were completely bland, and the alien seems done to death, re: Brian the Dog.

Honestly, Family Guy has ruined this show for me.  When the father said "remember when I freed you from Area 51...", I totally expected a bizarre flashback and was disappointed when there was none.  For a show with "political humor," there sure isn't much.  Those that were in pretty much sucked. Ccolor-coded threat level" jokes are already passe.

I only guffawed once, when the the chair the alien was on suddenly broke.  If that cheap joke is the best you can do, god save that show.

I enjoyed it, although it was very family guy. I find it odd that Fox would pick a show up like this anyway, arent they a pro Bush network?

I found Mr Smith to be quite funny, but there is only so much you can do with a character like that, I mean constant terror jokes and republican references can only go so far, what if the democrats get back in power? They'll run out of material

Exactly, Grim.  "American Dad" is coming out at a terrible time for political humor.  Let's say, for kicks, that John Kerry wins the election in November.  "American Dad" won't premire until January, in Kerry's term. So all these topical jokes about Bush, Rumsfeld, terror alerts, etc., will become extremly dated.

So you're saying we should vote for Bush, eh? *done*

It's kinda hard to care/get excited about a show that is going to be cancelled. It has no chance, and you know it!

That's just conjecture. It is, however, the kind of conjecture that I've no problem buying in to. I don't forsee a long life for this show.

True. You can't really imagine a show with a plot like this having 15 seasons.

I'm honestly considering starting a pool on how long "American Dad" will last.  Interested parties will gather today, choose the number of weeks the show airs, and whoever is closest to the week FOX stops showing it wins.  Personally, I think the show will be done with by June, most definately.  At the earliest, AD will be out by March.

It'll get cancelled after its first season, then revived, cancelled at the end of its second season, thought lost for good until dvd sales boom when it will be renewed just as macfarlane's American Dad clone show goes into productions.

This senario has the worst odds

The show looked alright... but nowhere close to the goodness of Family Guy. I didn't really laugh at anything in the show, but it's just the pilot so when they air the rest of the episodes who knows it could be better.

I say that Fox promotes it and airs it regularly through out it's first season, it doesn't get the ratings that FOX expects, the airing get further and further apart as it's bumped from time slot to timeslot in season 2, and then it's quietly cancelled after the remaining episodes have been aired.

I watched the preview of AD, and I can't say that I was all that impressed.  :hmpf:

They just can't seem to cut back on the T.V. Show jokes.

This show is supposed to air after the Super Bowl.

I can't believe all the people saying "Oh, I wasn't that impressed blah blah yada yada"...it was a hell of a lot better than the Family Guy pilot, that's for sure.

Well, I don't remember the Family Guy pilot, so I can complain either way.  I do remember not caring much for the first 'real' episode of FG, aside from the Kool-Aid Man randomly busting through the wall.

What time after the Super Bowl will American Dad be on?  I want to only watch one episode just to see if I like it or not.  If I do, I'll watch it!  If not, I'll fuhgeddaboudit!   ;)

Probably right after the Super Bowl. I have no idea exactly when it ends though. Or when it starts either.

I loved that part too.

And about AD, I'll watch the pilot and that's for sure, and if it's good, meaning it's a complete clone of FG, then I'll watch it as FG Substitute until it starts to air again.

Ouch. The first review of American Dad is up at NYTimes.com, and it doesn't look pretty.  Let me tell you, the phrase "garden variety" showed up quite a bit.  The reviewer calls the humor dated and unoriginal, and I might agree after I saw the pilot. Ugh.

I'm just saying, that out of all of the people who have actually seen the entire first episode, none of them have any positive feedback on it.  That's not a good sign.

It is slightly different than Family Guy. There was a lot more character based humor(Cut away with Klaus at olympics, stuff with Roger/Hailey). I like it. It was way better than Family Guy's first episode, if it continues to improve it will probably wind up being Family Guy's Futurama.

You realize that their house is a fancier version of the Griffin house? This isn't as funny as Family Guy, but it's not horrible.

Let's just hope it doesn't wind up like Futurama.

I like the character Roger.  He's the alien.  His voice is a little like Paul Lynn's voice from Bewitched.  As far as Family Guy over this show.  I like Family Guy more, but let's judge after they've aired a few more episodes of American Dad.  Let's also see if Family Guy still has it after three years of being cancelled.  I hope Family Guy is just the same as before.

Review of American Dad: Pilot

I gave it a chance. Even though I was completely underwhelmed by the online pilot, and the show's gotten mediocre to bad reviews in the press, I thought I'd watch it. And, sad to say, AD completely met my low expectations.

Good stuff: the change in the son's voice, Hillary Duff at gun point, "I met you in college. But I'm sure I told you all about them," "Women are always wrong."

Bad stuff: reliance on falling down & alien shitting (that'll get old soon), the goldfish & the wife, the dog, terror alert orange, all that dated humor.

The thought that came to me when watching this show was "Gosh, this would be really cutting edge....3 years ago!" So many of the 'political' jokes seemed dated and/or done better by other people.  The Bush/God/Cheney thing, the rigged elections, the "I love the 80s" thing all made this show seem out of touch. It would have been too much if Kerry was elected, then the show would basically be dead.

The problem is that none of the characters are at all likeable. Not Stan, not the alien, not the goldfish, not the kids. I can't imagine the show lasting long without at least one character that people can get behind.

Oh, and Seth MacFarlane's animation style is ugly. There, I said it. AD is drawn bad and makes my eyes bleed.

It wasn't actively bad, but it wasn't memorable in the least. So many plot points seemed ripped off from other shows.

I hated the wife, the goldfish, Stan, and Steve. Hailey and the alien were ok. The Hilary Duff thing was stupid and the only line that made me laugh was "Uh-oh he's gonna pee *Puff* Nope just dust". I agree with Evan here. I probably just give it a C though.

I found the pilot very funny. Tons of political jokes which I'm always up for, and I think it has alot of potential.

Not perfect, but neither was Family Guy's pilot.

Not all pilots are going to be like Futurama.  The Family Guy pilot had its moments but it wasn't one of the best Family Guy episodes.  I'm waiting until I watch a few more episodes and they I'll review American Dad.

As an American I was slightly displeased at the way the American family was portrayed in American Dad. I mean the school wasn't even dilapidated and it even seemed semi-functional! I would also like to know since when did Bush communicate with God via phone? Everyone knows he prefers to communicate with God while praying on his knees. Seriously though, I thought the show was moderately humorous, and the show could go along way, assuming the political/social environment in this country doesn't change too radically.

Edit: I'm aware of the typo that was in this post originally. I have removed it, so don't make mention of it unless you would like me to reserve a spot for you on my list of enemies, of freedom.

My god, that show was a total rip-off of "Family Guy". But as said before, I'll watch a few more episodes before totally reviewing it.

And sorry for sounding so naive, but what do you guys mean when you say 'Family Guy's Futurama'?

This is Seth Macfarlene's sophmore show.  His first being Family Guy.  Futurama was Matt Groening's sophmore show.  That is the only comparison I can think of.
