I mean, keep in mind that Family Guy itself had a pretty sub-par season in comparisson to its later seasons. Hell, so did Futurama. Even The Simpsons didn't get good until Season 3... Anyone who judges a show purely by the pilot episode should think about all their favourite shows. I bet at least one of them had a pretty lously pilot too. As for American Dad's pilot, I've still yet to see it, but I'm... aquiring it now. Considering it probably won't reach Aussie TV until 2006, and even then - it may not even get picked up here.

Most shows evolve yes, but the problem with AD is that there's nothing there to evolve from. The main character is a horrible, demeaning, just plain wrong stereotype of conservatives (and I'm a liberal!), the rest of the characters are just annoying, the "satire" is worse then Mad Tv, yada yada. Futurama's first season was its weakest, but it still provided a lot of promise for the show. It had interesting elements and well written humor, including the pilot (which was one of the better episodes of that season). It did creative things. It didn't just steal jokes from the worst scripts of "SNL" and then place them into a bland, Saturday Morning plot about a nerd with a crush on a cheerleader (that's innovative television right there!). Hell, even Family Guy attempted to give its characters more memorable hooks then this did, and actually had humor in it. The Simpsons' "Some Enchanted Evening" wasn't great, but was still miles ahead of this garbage, and actually had unique ideas.
I can grant that basically all shows need some time to grow, but there also needs to be something to grow from. McFarlane has basically admitted himself that he's merely copying the formula of "All in the Family" and making it wacky. And for his "vision" he's provided characters so bland and thin that there's just no direction to develop them into. Yes, you can think back to the pilots of your favorite shows and say "wow, things sure changed", but you can also look back at them and say that there was an intriguing dynamic, or interesting ideas. American Dad does not have those things. Nowhere close.

Keep inmind there are a few characters that havent been introduced yet. Steve's gang of friends didnt get much air time, but Snot is listed on Tvtome as a main character. There is also the head of the CIA that is being played by Patrick Stewart.
I wouldnt write it off just yet

Okay, so one thing that I realized is that American Dad is EXACTLY like Family Guy, but with different characters. I watched it and was soo disappointed that I had to turn it off. Don't get me wrong, I DO like Family Guy, but it just shows how uncreative the writers are. You have the same family (Mom, Dad, son, daughter) and instead of the dog (brian) you have some alien. The only difference is the little horny gold fish.
I was talking to one of my friends because I couldn't understand how Family Guy or something from the writers of Family Guy was coming back, and he explained it to me. The difference between FG and Futurama, is that Futurama has substance. The "re" watch factor is much better than FG because futurama's jokes are more creative. Family Guys are just simple. A lot of people do not like to watch things that you need to think about it. But, what I have realized through watching those 2 shows is that, Family Guy just bores me. I have only seen the episodes of FG about 4 or 5 times each, because I am so bored of them I can't watch it anymore. BUT, I have seen each Futurama episode about 40-50 times, and I STILL do not get bored.
I really liked the idea of another show from Seth Macfarlane (or whoever), but like I said, i was really disappointed. It was just WAY too much like Family Guy...

American Dad is NOT the next Simpsons. I mean, you can't judge it from one show! But I am. It's so stupid. The dad is Peter, except mixed with (the guy in the wheelchair, name slipped), the mom is Lois, the teen boy whose having problems is Chris but with the guy-that's-crazy-for-Meg look, the teen girl is an obvious rip on Meg, the fish is a Brian(both talk and both love the mom), and the alien is Stewie(minus the alien part). It's so obvious that it's a ripoff and unoriginal that I can't believe that people really think it's gonna last!
