Hasnt Seth MacFarlane shelved this idea since Family Guy is back in production?

I found this when I googled for it, I see it is by the guy who made Family Guy so I guess it might be OK Since it doesn't start till February this might be a bit premature to talk about it

American Dad sounds like a cheap ass Family Guy clone, the same idea people thought Futurama was just Simpsons in space.

Lampy: Yes, I could be wrong. But I'll be suspicious if this guy was a big fat bumbler...

He isn't really fat, and doesn't seem like a bumbler. Looks like a Joe who can stand, actually. But I mean.. Yeah.. Futurama never seemed to be like a Simpsons clone. This, however, smacks of laziness. Seth needs to let Family Guy rest and think up something original. I know he can if he tries.

It does look like a clone of Family Guy. Sure, there will be more political jokes and stuff, but it will also have the same "remember that time when..." or "X celebrity did something that makes no sense". I'll watch it to see what it's like, but I predict a lot of reused jokes.

The jokes and story in Family guy were cheap, and the show itself lacked substance.
If this show ever airs, I can't honestly see it ever distinguishing itself from family guy, which was a big piece of crap.

C'mon - give it a chance, people. You're badmouthing it 9 months before the first episode's even aired. Hell, everyone compared Futurama to The Simpsons before it premiered, and look at how wrong they were.
Anyway, in my own opinion - it sounds like it could go either way. With stuff like aliens and the whole CIA theme, it's definately going to be incredibly wacky, which is good for me because I love crazy humour. After all, that's what made Family Guy so hilarious. I'll wait until I see it before I decide whether I like it more or less than Family Guy, though.
I highly doubt I'll dislike it, being a Seth MacFarlane show and all... even if it does end up being a lot like Family Guy, I have no doubts in my mind that it'll be as funny as hell. Still, I'd want it to steer as far away from Family Guy as possible. No matter how funny it is, I really hope it's original.

I'm with you, Lamp. However, we do live in a world where some people don't understand that writers have more than one aspect to them. The people that think American Dad will be a perfect clone of Family Guy are probably the same people that didn't see The Majestic because "Ace Ventura" was trying to do something other than... well, Ace Ventura.
Also, can't anyone appreciate a good cheap joke anymore? I know Futurama is good because it's so witty and subtle, but it had some cheap jokes too. And you laughed at them. You know you did. Why are so many people against a collection of cheap jokes that just slap you in the face? They're almost refreshing.
I know so many people who hate shows for the dumbest reasons. Seinfeld is a good example. Yes, the show was full of random "airline peanuts-y" jokes, but if you manage to look past that, there's a really deep and relatable show underneath. No one sees that part though. They just see the "He loves to pop in. I love to pop in. Everyone loves the pop-in! I pop in, he pops in, we all pop in! It's a pop-in party! A party of pop-ins!" and they all miss the good subtle jokes.
Same goes with FG. Once you accept that there's no coherent plot and all the jokes are cheap, you can just appreciate the show for what it is and start laughing at the jokes just because they're so random and cheap.
Long story short: American Dad has the potential to be a good show, as long as people stop being so intolerant of change.

That's the thing, though. Seems like everyone around here WANTS change.. So much so that if it even looks as if it's no big change from Family Guy they're annoyed.

I could have worded my arguement better. What I meant to say was people are so stubborn that they think McFarlane is a one-trick pony and won't be able to change. As soon as people realize he just might be able to do something different, I've achieved my goal. Originally posted by DotheBartman: And again, word from someone who's seen it is that it is in fact rehash-ville. Have you seen it yet? Give it a chance before forming an opinion on it. I could be right, or I could be wrong. All I want is to give it a chance.

Well, I'm looking forward to it. Even if it IS 'more of the same'.. Well, said 'the same' was damn funny. Be optimistic! Here's hoping it's even better than Family Guy.

That's SO disappointing. The Family Guy pilot at least was funny enough to catch my interest.

Personally, I didn't think it was that bad. If it weren't for the fact that they had to introduce the characters in six minutes, I think it could have been better, but still. It'll only last a season anyway, so who really cares?
Summary: Not what I hoped for, but I'll still watch it.

Little known fact: Drunknmunky is a robot sent from the past to tell us things we already know.
I watched this again last night with a group of friends, and we all thought it was very "Family Guy" and very funny. I showed them the reviews on this page, and they said "What show were they watching?"
I also find it very interesting that the people who said about FG, "I'm willing to look past the bad plotlines and character development," are the same people now saying about AD, "Man, those characters are ripoffs. The show's plotline won't stand up for more than an ep."
