I'm seriously considering buying a DVD
season set of TNG, but which one?

Thankfully, I don't get the Sci-fi channel or some of the numerous re-run only channels.  So, I haven't seen TNG in quite some time.

I don't leach eps online, so going the DVD route is the only practical (not to mention honest) way to go for me.

I need the Trekkies here, you know who you are, to help me decide on one and only one season to go with.  As these sets are quite pricy.

I'd appreciate fairly detailed info, just to help me digest the vast array of eps I have to choose from.

Please don't spam the hell out of this, thank you.

Right now, I'm leaning toward season 6 or 7.

I'd actually pick Season 3 as the best.

Season 5 has some really great episodes: "Darmok" (guest starring the late Paul Winfield), "Unification" parts one and two (with Leonard Nimoy as Spock), "Cause and Effect" (with a cameo by Kelsey Grammer), "The Perfect Mate" (guest starring Famke Janssen), "I, Borg" (possibly the best Borg related episode in the series), and "The Inner Light" (the best episode of the entire series, period).

I'd go with season 5.

Spicy, avoid Seasons 6 and 7 AT ALL COSTS!  Season 6 isn't bad, but contains a lot of soapy episodes.  And by Season 7 they were running out of ideas.

Seasons 3 and 5 are the best, and I'd also suggest looking at Season 2, which has the monumental first appearance of the Borg.

I would advise you to pick season number 1. Then if you decide that you want to by another, even though they are really pricey, you could watch them all in order.

I mean, have you seen one season of Star Trek you need to see another. I'm eagerly awaiting first Voyager set now. I have serious Star Trek-abstinens right now.

But if you are only going to get one I'd advise you to pick Season number 4 since it has 2 great Data centred episodes: In one (Data's Day) we get to follow Data around on the day of O'Briens wedding and get an insight in how he thinks as he analyzes or species. In the other one (In Theory) Data purses a romance with another crew member, kinda odd episode.

Other great episodes in this set is:

Qpid: In which Q plays a little roleplaying game with the crew, this game takes place in Sherwood Forest, guess what happens  :p

The Nth Degree: In which Barclay gets gifted with super-intelligence.

Clue: In which Data has to tell a lie in order to protect a species or something that he symphatises with.

Season 3 is definitely a good choice, considering that by buying this one you could watch episodes like "Yesterday's Enterprise", The Sins of the Father", "The Offspring", etc.

Although buying this might force you to buy Season 4 as well, thanks to season finale, "The Best of Both Worlds"...   ;)

I think if you had made this this a poll, you'd find a more or less even distribution between seasons 3-7 if enough people voted. Seasons 1 and 2 are out in my opinion since the series is just starting to get off the ground, and they're also shorter.

I mean sure season 3 is great, but so is season 7 since is has Gambit and The Pegasus and Parellels and AGT. Although it also has Sub-Rosa, which kinda disqualifies it.   ;)

Understatement of the year.

Assuming that "Inner Light" is the one I think it is, with the living an entire lifetime in a few seconds to help keep the knowledge of a people long dead alive, I agree with David A.

Thanks for your input, everyone.  After reading this thread and doing some basic skimming over of episode guides.  I've gotten it narrowed down to season 3 or 5.

Now, I always maintained it took a couple of seasons for TNG to really find it's legs.  So, seasons 1 and 2 are out.  There were some really good eps in that time, but also some cheesy clunkers.  Season 3 is where minor and major characters got developed, and main players like Worf started to get more screen time.

I still like the later seasons better as the characters and stories based around them had more to work with as we, the audience are familiar with every individual's traits.  That being said, I'll probably go with season 5, except theres a couple of eps I don't like.

The one focusing on Alexander, Worf's son and the one with Lwaxana Troi  I can do without stuff like that.  But, I'll agree Inner Light is a great ep, and frankly blew me away when I saw it.

Decisions, decisions

I don't have time for a lenghty analysis today (maybe tomorrow), but I chose season 5 too. Lot's of great episodes in that one (except for "Disaster" and "Cost of Living" ), like "Inner Light", "Darmok", "Unification I +II", "New Ground", "Conundrum", "Cause And Effect", "I, Borg" and "The Inner Light".

Although season 3 have a lot of good going for it with : "Who Watches The Watchers", "Booby Trap", "The High Ground", "Deja Q", "Yesterday's Enterprise", "The Offspring", "Sins Of The Father", "Sarek" and "The Best of Both Worlds I".
