A. Futurama was dropped a looong time ago -- new episodes stopped being made more than a year ago. It's a little late to get all hot & bothered about its cancellation.
B. The Simpsons is far from being dumped, sadly. Fox will continue to air that show until they have driven it a full 6 feet underground.

Well, the simpsons is the last vestage of quality that keeps the network from sinking into the dregs, but it is a little well, I think it may have grown too big and pervasive.  And Fox and Futurama to me should not be uttered within the same sentance.  (oops).  They raped this brillaint program for no other reason than it defied their preconcieved unfounded notions of "good TV" and denied them a shinier dollar.  I hasten to add that immediately after cancellation they raced to try and find a decent replacement.

Watch the movie "Network"  You will understand Fox.

every time I watch FOX's promos for all of their stupid TV shows like "The World's Greatest Car Chases", I say to myself they canceled some of my favorite shows for that, crap. Also FOX has reached a new low and will be basically airing a "Animal Mating" show, instead of putting a great show like Futurama back on.

That would be so hilarious.  Undoubtedly, Fox would videotape it and air it the next week.

FOX uses merchandising, a time honoured American tradition when it comes to cartoons, but when Futurama wasn't making as much money via hilarious blow up chair and clocks that repeat the same damn annoying catch-phrase, they decided to fob up some crappy excuse and can a show that RECENTLY won several awards.

I wish the Simpsons were canned, they're nothing but dried up fossils of themselves.

*Agrees with the last sentence in Nurdbot's post especially*

I wish they were cancelling the Simpsons! However, with a movie coming up in '06, I don't really see that happening.

For the record I don't think merchandising has anything to do with the either The Simpsons still being on or Futurama being cancelled.  The Simpsons still makes more money then most of their other shows combined probably without the merchandising.

The reason Fox cancelled Futurama was because they hated it.  Now, to be clear, they hate The Simpsons too.  Despise it.  As Harry Shearer said, they're constantly dying to cancel it.  Problem is, its, as stated, hugely, hugely, hugely profitable.  They would have to do something so blatantly obvious to bring its ratings down low enough to legitimately kill it that their stockholders would probably think they were crazy and jump ship.

Futurama, however, was a relatively new show. It didn't have the same luck The Simpsons did of taking off so immediately, and so Fox was able to bump it around for the first couple seasons without looking too crazy.  This process KEPT it from becoming successful, so they were able to abandon it at the 7:00 on Sundays deadzone, again not looking too crazy.  It still persevered for a while, but through creatively bumping it around, pre-empting it, not advertising, etc they were able to "legitimately" cancel it at the end.

Basically, Fox killed it on purpose because they hated it personally.  The only difference with The Simpsons is that its too big for them to touch.  They'd look too stupid.

Absolutely. I'm glad that Futurama didn't go merchandise-crazy like The Simpsons did in the early '90s. It would have basically made the crew look like sell-outs.
FOX did kill it on purpose, and we just have to realize it.

Yeah, I think Groening once said "its not in our interest to flood the market with Futurama products".

For the record they don't have much control over Simpsons products, but it does appear as "selling out" to anyone that doesn't know that.  It would've made Futurama look worse if there had been stuff as cheap as some of the Simpsons merchandise was in the "Bartmania" days.

I know that they didn't (and still don't) have much control over Simpsons merchandise, but I was and still am appalled at FOX for putting so much Simpsons stuff on the market. As the show goes on, more and more merchandise comes out, and it gets really annoying. I mean, Bart and Homer antenna toppers? Who needs 'em?
Actually, I think that Futurama would have hardly benefited from more merchandise, seeing as how the show was cancelled because FOX hated it. I think that the excuse that "it wasn't selling well and the ratings weren't good." given by FOX for Futurama's cancellation is a blatant lie. It was their fault in the first place. They want to cancel shows, but because they don't want anyone else to obtain rights to produce them, they put them in a bad timeslot, thus effectively killing them.

Yeah, the merchandise has gotten more and more ridiculous lately.  I realized just how bad it had gotten a while back when I saw Ralph Wiggum panties.  :hmpf:

:laff: No, I don't think so.

The scariest thing I've ever seen(albeit in an image on a forum) actually is Simpsons condoms.  Rest assured those were bootlegs though.

Still, I don't know why anyone would even bootleg such a thing.

No doubt FOX were upset that they didn't think of it first, pity they didn't make Futurama ones, it would be amusing to observe somebody going to a shop and asking for Bender condoms  :p

Considering that there are already lots of threads about Futurama getting cancelled, and that The Simpsons is NOT getting cancelled...
