ok i dont think anyone else did this poll but i could be wrong, assuming youve seen a few episodes of each show what do you think is the best. i stuck to the two most famous , MAD Tv, SNL.

ok now my vote, i pick MAD only because the new SNL's suck big time !

SNL does suck right now, and REALLY BADLY I might add.  Which means its slightly better then Mad TV.

Oh, snap.

SNL: Formerly hilarious, currently tepid.

MAD TV: Formerly unwatchable, currently godawful, permanently dumb.

Live, from New York, it's... getting LAN.gnome's vote!

Best sketch comedy show? Hmm...I'll go with the Kids in the Hall or UCB. Why is there no 'other' option?

Kids in the Hall should definitely been included. What's UCB though?

And where the freaking hell is Monty Python?

UCB is the Upright Citizen's Brigade, a sketch comedy show that aired on Comedy Central for a few seasons. It's pretty messed up comedy, and most of the cast went on to do other stuff. Amy Poehler (of SNL) used to be a member, as did Matt Walsh, current/former correspondent for the Daily Show.

Second. Monty Python was funnier than MAD TV or SNL ever were.

Second City TV.

I've never seen it, but 95% of the cast of Christopher Guest's movies are from SCTV, so it has to be good.

If we're talking sketch comedy, nothing beats Monty Python's Flying Circus.  I also like The Kids in the Hall, The State, and Alexei Sayle's Stuff.

Of the two listed, I'd pick Saturday Night LiveSNL was great back in the 70s and 80s, but now it's just a pale shadow of its former self.

I'd choose Monty Python's Flying Circus of Kids in the Hall, but of the two choices, I pick SNL. Mad TV sucks.

SNL was kind of hit and miss in the early 80's -- they went through cast members faster than Donald Trump goes through apprentices. Zing!

SNL got great again in the late 80's, tapered off in the early 90's, experienced a brief resurgence in the Will Ferrell era, and returned to "meh" following his departure.

Sorry, but I haven't really watched SNL much since Phil Hartman left.  The episodes that I have seen were all pretty bland.

Anyway, the old episodes with the original cast members were the best.

He was Mugatu in "Zoolander", the Elf in "Elf", he was in "Old School", and is in the upcoming movies "Starsky and Hutch" and "Anchorman". He's been called the closest castmember to Phil Hartman SNL has gotten since Hartman was killed. Plus he's hilarious.

Not seen either of these shows, perhaps we need a thread for US shows other countries don't watch  :p

Lan, I actually do know which one he is.  I just find him to be pretty much indistinguishable from all of the other unfunny people that have been on the show in recent years.

Nah, we just needed to include a few more choices in the poll, like the shows that I mentioned.

It would be better if it wasn't a poll at all, it is unlikely that the person starting such a poll would have a good enough knowledge of other countries shows, often the best comedies in one country wouldn't get a laugh in others as the viewer wouldn't get the references.

Let's forget the poll then, and just talk about our favorite sketch comedy shows.   :)

Nickelodeon had some pretty good sketch comedy shows back in the day.  Does anyone else remember You Can't Do That on Television, Out of Control, and Turkey Televison?

I'd say the best comedy show is Casper & Mandrilaftalen, but there are only two other persons (and maybe one more coming soon) that might even know what I'm talking about. SNL and MADTV- I haven't really been able to see it here, but the stuff I have seen has been ranging from "crappy" through "bland" and on to "almost hilarious".

Casper & Mandrilaftalen was indeed great, although they sometimes overdid the crazyness. Still, "Jeg sænker din husbåd, Lars Bom!" is forever fixed in my mind.  :D

The gun rack that spouted random 80's pick-up lines was a great sketch well (and it even featured a cameo from John Cleese, himself).

Them's fightin' words, soldier.

I've watched a lot of the 70's-era episodes on E! when they rerun them, and they're not as untouchable as evryone claims they are. I will grant them a far superior cast, but sketch-wise they're pretty much even.

SNL is still funny because of the Weekend Update, and the becoming-less-common really good sketches. MAD TV is just stupid, and always will be.

Best comedy sketch show of all time is Mr. Show. Followed by SNL. I don't really like MAD TV I really don't find a great deal of it funny, except for Will Sasso(sp?) sometimes.

Um... my favorite isn't on this list, but if those are the choices I'll say SNL? MADD tv is crude. I don't know why Comedy Central advertises it as 'the most controvertial thing on television'. They are the ones who brought South Park, a little contradictory? And SNL is much more so just because it hits real leader figures hard wand without apology while MADD just copies them every once in awhile. I would have to say that the only thing controvertial about MADD is that Comedy Central even airs it.

I was always partial to The State, myself.

As for Mad TV vs. SNL, read Bartman's post and then pretend I said it. Although I thought Mad TV was funny, in its first couple of seasons(back when they had David Herman).

I want to give the finger to nearly every Mad TV/SNL sketch I see. It's sad.

I like Kids in the Hall (and I LOVE Kevin McDonald  ), Monty Python and occasionally SNLSNL is really hit-or-miss now, though more often miss.  It's too bad Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan and Tracy Morgan left.  I really miss Mango and Brian Fellow.  :(
I'm not fond of MADTV.  I enjoyed it when I was younger (read: enjoyed nosemilk and flatulance jokes), but now I just find it annoying.  It's always prepped as being edgy and demented, but it's nothing stranger than the Kids did.  Who else could come up with the Dr. Suess Bible?  And who doesn't love Buddy Cole?
