I think the problem with the
Galaxy-class is that in TNG, they tried to make it look as agile as the original
Constitution-class, when it's not supposed to be. The
Enterprise-D is more akin to a battleship, whereas the original
Enterprise (and of course, the NCC-1701-A), were heavy cruisers, and hence more agile.
I don't like the way the Intrepid looks with it's nacelles in the down position - not enough depth below what would be the waterline of the ship - with them up it looks a lot better.
Also, the Sovereign is a ship that looks fine from any angle except directly behind, because it distorts the nacelles to make it look oddly stunted.
