In behind the laughter they animated 2 answers to the question, in the one they played in the US it was North Kentucky, but it was somewhere else in the rest of the world

There are many town's called Springfield, so it should be pretty fun/hard to figuire out.
It's a Northen State they're in, that's for sure.

I don't necessarily think it needs to be in a state that has a place called Springfield. After all, South Park is located in Collarado and doesn't really exist (although it is based on a real small town there called Fairplay). Also, Quahog is in Rhode Island - but I'm not sure if that's a real place or not. My point is that although it's set in a fictional city, it can still be located in a real state.

Also, it can't be set in California, since the family visited there once. They also mentioned a few other states in that same episode (I forget it's name, but it's the one where they accidentally "kill" an alligator during spring break) that can also be elimiated, but I can't remember them either.

I remember Marge saying "Springfield, Illinois".

I have another question: Does Capitol City really exist or is it just a Simpsons spoof of Las Vegas?

*sorry if this a double post. My connection is acting up*

Matt Groening has said that it's not anywhere. All the little hints and stuff were just to annoy the fans. Behind The Laughter said Northern Kentucky on first showing and Southern Missouri on repeats.

Yeah they called it springfield, because so many towns in The USA are called springfield. It's like an "anytown" Usa. This way they don't have to put restrictions on themselves, for example: It can be on the coast in one episode and it can be in the middle of a dessert in another one.

Yeah, all the referenced are just to drive the fans crazy.  But just for the sake of arguing, you could also say that Springfield is in some state west of the Mississippi River for sure.  This is obvious because the radio station there is KBBL.  In the US, radio/TV stations east of the Mississippi start with "w", and in the west start with "k".

Just think: They're a northern state BUT they also have a confederate flag. Therefore:

Actually, I live in a northern state and I see lots of Confederate flags from people who moved here or were decendants of people from the south.

But it's not from somewhere else, it's the flag that represents their city.

Offically, Springfield is in the state of "North Tacoma." (see the license plates in earlier seasons). Unoffically, we're all pretty sure it's in Oregon. Reason 1, that's where Matt Greoning's from. Reason 2, it must have access to the sea (numerous episodes). Reason 3, it has a very diverse climate (mountains, beaches, deep forests, deserts). Most, if not all of these, can be found in the Northwest. Reason 4, its west of the Mississippi (KBBL, etc.) Reason 5, a wizard did it.

Damn, I'd forgotten about that. I was thinking of a flag I saw on someone's car (or maybe it was a garage) once on the show.

there is a place in Massachusettes(I can't spell that word) called Springfield. But my friends, who are absolute simpsons freaks, excluding me, think it's in Canada. Well, that's what i get for hanging out with a bunch of 9 year olds, i guess.

You think that's bad? In high school, some people at a lunch table argued whether Spider-man shoots webs from his left or right hands, or if he alternates between 'swing' and 'capture' webbing on both hands.

Exactly. Springfield is the most commonly used name for a town in the US, and that's why it was picked for the show.

God, why wont this topic just die...

Many of the people involved with the show have said there isn't a state, period.  David Silverman, Al Jean, Tim Long (whom I saw in person) and others have all given the supposed "answer".  Others have simply fucked with the fans, saying "North Takoma" (David Silverman's joke answer) and "Hawaii" (Mike Reiss).

^That would have been my point exactly.  I almost got into a fistfight with my friend who insisted they were from N Kentucky because of that behind the laughter ep.

Edit:  I woulda kicked his ass.
