I think that adequately sums up my feelings while watching.  I just couldn't put it in words, and it's almost like they could have called them the Haruhara Haruko Show, but they never quite became that either.

Presumably I'll rewatch ALCL and PLCL at some point and enjoy them better having zero expectations from them, as I know them now for what they are (extensions of the Mob Psycho 100 universe), perhaps they'll be familiar enough to put on while falling asleep.

Cartoon Network is showing the original FLCL again.  I don't think that I've re-watched it since watching Progressive and Alternative.  I'd forgotten just how much of a masterpiece this show is.

I used to watch it going to bed, now sometimes sporadically; and it's in the old standard tv ratio.  The first show really is jam packed through out.  Each episode has a lot of details and multiple storylines going through, and they seamlessly interweave with one another serendipitously.  I'm not even sure I have a favorite episode, with each episode sharing significant pieces of emotional consideration about the characters lives, and some sort of explosive, brilliantly animated action sequence.  I do like Naota when he absorbs Atomsk, and that moment where he just stops and he has the combined bass/guitar.  It's just a very circular piece to watch, and guitars with pullstarts is such a neat idea.

So are they really going with the 3d animated, kinda cell colored characters for the new one?  There's a new one?

Yeah, there's a new one, or there will be when it premieres next month.  After re-watching the original, I have to ask, why bother?

I mean, on the one hand, FLCL is amazing, and I can understand why you would want more of it.  On the other hand, FLCL is amazing, and nothing new could ever be as good as the original, so why sully it with pale imitations?

I enjoyed Progressive and Alternative for what they are, but what they are is big budget fan fiction.  That's all that the new one will be either.  I'll probably watch it; it might even be entertaining, but it won't be anything like the real thing, not even close.

The less said about 3D cell shaded animation the better.  :nono:

Yeah, original FLCL was lightning in a bottle perfect really.  It's like it summons the zeitgeist of the time it was made in--Cowboy Bebop feels much the same way.

Agreed on the 3D stuff.... I'm not a fan of it over more traditional hand drawn stuff.... Even when it's not clunky like that first Berserk movie.  And what's funny is FLCL, the original, had 3d animated scenes, but they were used a creative effect for emphasis in a few random places and were very well done.

I feel like there's a difference between the way that Futurama and FLCL use 3D animation and shows that are fully 3D animated.  Also, some 3D animated shows look okay, but a lot of them just look bad.
