I saw references to that and that it was a push by JMS? I suppose I ought to get off my butt and finish the original series...

Yes its spearheaded by JMS himself.. wich is good

His twitter is really valuable now about whats going on and i feels like the good old days when he was so active during B5 production..

what we know:

-Is gonna be a total reboot.. not a "remake" .. JMS said is like gona be a different take on the history .. is going to be the same history but like rethinked after over 2 decades of new influences and ideas ..
-is NOT going to be what the series would been had Michael O'hare not had health problems or the network "cancelled" the show after S4 and renewed a S5 after he wraped the history
-The original cast will be there somehow.. he wants the old gang (or those still surviving and on good terms) to be there , probably in other roles.. so probably expect Bruce Boxleitner, Peter Jurassic, Patricia Tallman and oddly Claudia Christian seems to be in (despite her leaving the show in relativy bad terms) and hopefully Bill Mumy, Ed Wasser and Jasen Carter as well, maybe even Tracy Scoggings (she was quite avalaible on B5 after S5 as she was on movies, Crusade and Lost Tales) .. i expect them to be like like Richard Hatch was in Battlestar Galactica where he played a totally new and different character than his original role as Apollo.. and Tom Zarek was one of the best characters of the show (at least until ruined in last season but thats my personal rant)

Im not a big fan of reboots.. at least on those about great shows that didnt need a reboot.. B5 is one of the greatests space operas ever.. hard to think it being done any better save for the special effects thing.. so this scares me ..

However history had proven me wrong sometimes... Battlestar Galactica reboot was inmenselly better than the original and one of the top space operas ever (unpopular opinion) and Space Battleship Yamato reboot is also utterly superior to the original.,. both in any way not just modern time special FX and CGI.. and if anyone can pull this off its JMS himself ..its his history..his baby ..he is one of the best scifi writers out there on many levels ..if he is given enought autorithy and the network doesnt get their noses into it he might pull off a quite interesting thing (hope they dont have some Alex Kurtzman type guy coming to ruin the day) .. also being a reboot it means it doesnt continue or replace the original.. they are going to be separated products so it wont ruin the original .. unlike other certain sagas (Star Wars, Star Trek) that had the misfortune of having people writing new stuff wich ruined the classic stuff to build theirs over the former death's body..

-Hilariously enought some folks are beggining to pitch ideas to JMS and he is sometimes politelly and others not so rejecting them and rightly so.. As he explained a lot of times in the past , same as Matt Groening and David Cohen said back in the day they CANT and WONT read fanfiction because that would seriously limit their creative scope and potentially a legal nightmare.. of course he encourages fanfiction.. and he has the upmost respect and support..but cant read it.. he has allready asked several times that people stop sending him ideas and is allready blocking people left and right

Considering how many of the original cast are no longer with us, this is probably the only way that we'll get any more Babylon 5 at this point.  I'm just not sure that we need any more Babylon 5 at this point...

I think that my feelings about remakes, reboots, reimaginings, and other assorted rehashings should be well known to peelers by now, so I won't bother going into that here.

I saw references to that and that it was a push by JMS? I suppose I ought to get off my butt and finish the original series...

There's no guarantee that this will actually happen, and even if it does it will take a while to be made, so there's probably no rush.

You should finish watching the original series anyway, because it's really, really good.

In the case of B5 im on the side that we dont need more cause the history is complete .. everything done after Sleeping in light aired was just adding aditional stuff and building on what had been droped here and there (the Drakh War, the telepath war, the Rangers.. etc) and wasnt really necesary.. but wellcome anyway.

The same applies to the reboot (wich JMS said this past week has just been pushed back 1 year to at least 2023 and probably is more on the side wont happen than will as now)..  we dont need one.. B5 is extremelly good as it is even with its flaws.. but im not against a reboot.. if its nearly as nice as the original it will be awesome sci-fi wich is good now that the Expanse is finished (for now)

I started watching this again. I skipped the first season on the first run, on advice, and am doing the same this time. It really is one of those rare good TV shows, though.

I'm curious why you skipped/were advised to skip the first season? I remember Michael O'Hare getting some criticism, but he was portraying the character as fairly stiff, as intended by JMS, iirc.

And poor Mira Furlan, commenting before her death "I look at the stars. It’s a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That’s where I’ll be going soon. 'We’re all star stuff'". She was younger than I am now, when she passed. :(

It was a suggestion of a good place to start, from the person who initially recommended the show to me years ago. Not that the first season was bad, per se, but that it wasn't as good as the subsequent seasons, and it wasn't necessary to know the events in the first season to follow the rest of the show.

What you said makes me want to watch it, though..

Mr. O'Hare got so stressed from all the criticism that it basically broke him and he left the show because of it, asking everyone involved to keep the reasons confidential until after his death. He passed in 2012 and someone (JMS?) mentioned it in an interview.

I mean, he was playing a person who got fucked up mentally by the Vorlons and had something planted in his mind, and playing it perfectly. :(

*  edit  *

And if you get the opportunity, check out some of the interviews with Claudia Christian, Jerry Doyle, and Bruce Boxleitner talking about the show--they are absolutely hilarious, and guessing from the restraint they were obviously showing to keep it halfway family friendly, their joking around on the set must have been insanely funny.

P.S. The interview in mind was from one of the disc extras, and I can't seem to find it online.

I would strongly recommend that you do not skip the first season.  There are a number of events that might not seem that important during the first season, but will turn out to be important during the later seasons.  The first season lays the foundation upon which the rest of the series is built.  It builds up slowly, but stick with it, and your patience will be rewarded.

Well, I bowed to peer pressure and watched S01E01.. I'm glad I did. It was as good as any other episode, so thanks!

Very randomly, I found something else B5-related. There was a link posted elsewhere on the net for the website https://www.wikibinge.com - an autogenerator for links between wiki articles. I put in 'Zebra' and 'Asteroid', as they seemed like especially distant topics (as well as places in the alphabet!). Anyway, the answer I got was very long, but also included Michael O'Hare, and some Babylon 5 episodes:

Another connection to the stars :)

Ideally, you should actually start by watching the pilot episode, "The Gathering" before watching the first season proper, although it's not strictly necessary, and there are a number differences between the pilot and the series.

Aparently now there will be an animation movie of B5

https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/10/23718851/babylon-5-the-road-home-animated-movie-synopsis-cast

Unexpected but not unwellcome
Actually while im totally in for animation (as it offers much greater visual freedom for sci-fi settings) i do wonder if the reason is more showing characters of people that are gone as a majority of the show main cast is gone... as i understood the animated movie will be within the "original" series canon (to distinguis it from the reboot thing)

Many of the characters stated to appear would be gone in the 20 year span of the series "finale" (wink wink) but could be "flashbacks" so this doesnt necesarily tell the time setting

Well, I'd certainly be more interested in watching an animated Babylon 5 movie than a remake with an entirely new cast.

Whether it will actually be good or not depends on the animation studio, the art style, and so many other factors...

I really do hope it turns out to be good.  Babylon 5 was such a great series, but none of the various attempts to continue the franchise have been very successful.

JMS just posted the first screenshots of the movie.. its 3D cell shading style (like Star Wars resistance)

Ugh.  3D CGI is not what I was expecting when you mentioned animation.

and trailer is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z54XNJivHOs

Claudia Christian is back voicing Ivanova.. good to see things cleared up between them

Bruce is obviously vocing Sheridan.. besides them we get back Peter Jurasik, Bill Mumy, Patricia Tallman, Tracy Scoggings .. so most of the surviving cast is back

Phill Lamar will voice Steven Franklin (played by late Richard Biggs)

That gave me flashbacks to watching T*** T***** (spoilers if you didn't watch the trailer) and ST:TAS. It could be interesting, but the animation style will take a bit of getting used to. I like some of the callbacks though.

The voice acting sounds great.  The story looks interesting.

The visuals are appalling.

the visuals are the same used in Star Wars Resistance.. i dont hate them.. but not my favorite either (doesnt have anything to do with the fact that i hate resistance for its uber-stupid writing by someone who thinks animated and for young audience (kids) means inserting as many slips, falls, bites, tripings and farts as phyisically posible wich made a potential good history (who actually had some interesting sub-plots) look like the most stupid thing ever done for Star Wars (until Kenobi)

BTW, im lookin forward for this B5 movie, specially for the oportunities animation brings in this kind of setting (no more settings , gravity or character restrain) but at the same time im not hoping for much.. you know how much i love B5 but almost everything done for it after the 5 year main series never came close .. only a prequel (In the Beginning) and Crusade didnt had time to properly take off before they axed it..the rest of the movies suck.. and the Lost tales while not bad was mostly irrelevant and not much interesting..

Its a shame after seeing the trailer that JMS wont take the oportunity to continue the arcs set in motion and left open like the Telepath war, the Drakh War and the cold war with the Centauri Republic insigated by them until it was finally solved (as told in a book series) or the solution of the Drakh plage (wich was barelly very fast walked over in the lost tales)

I agree; it is a shame.  He could have taken this opportunity to tell any of those stories that haven't been told (or have only been told in books).  Instead, it looks like this will be like most of the other movies: a stand-alone story that won't really have any impact on the series as a whole.

I will say I love the rendition of Deleen. I wish Andreas Katsulas was still alive.

I also agree re: the shame about not following the arcs. It was only a trailer, though, and, optimistically, there may be some acknowledgement or even follow-up in the full movie.
