futurama was great, for a while there. but why dwell on a lost cause? don't get me wrong here, i loved futurama, but with what, 80 episodes under it's belt, and next to NO continuality, it is just not that great, never has been, and never will.
sure futurama has love, drama, action, futuristic..ness, and all those lovable characters, but there have to be better shows out there. some even on adult swim that have the same characteristics of that weird love thing fry and leela have, action, adventure, and stuff like that.
i personally like inuyasha for the same reasons that i like futurama. it has nearly the same love relationship, action, adventure, a rich assortment of complementary characters, but most of all one hell of a plot. at first the plot seems thin, but that is well supplimented with action and drama that keeps you wanting to see the next episode to find out how things will turn out. The plot then develops more and more and more characters are added to the team. It just build and builds. They have yet to resolve any of the real issues in the show, even by like episode 100 there are the same problems, just more side characters, more adventure, and they all seem to be working toward some kind of a central goal.
futurama on the other hand, is made up of about 70 or so self contained adventures that for the most part have nothing to do with all the others. i am serious here. come to think of it, is there a major plot in futurama? what? deliver packages? sure there is the fry/leela thing, but that is a running side plot. and just that a side plot. do they have a goal? anyting like that? flatly....no. that is one thing i never got.
Another thing is the continuality in futurama. There almost never was any. There was never even a two episode major adventure event. And don’t tell me they needed more seasons for it. Hell, I have found just one episode of inuyasha like that. It was an Ok episode at that, taught a good lesson.
There are shows better than futurama, just a matter of looking. So stop you gloating and bellyaching and move on.

Just because it's related to a channel that SHOWS Futurama doesn't make it Futurama related. This should be in the T.V. forum.

You will be lynched by this board's entire population. I just wanted you to know that. Going on a board full of fanatics of a show like Futurama (who are already very bitter and angry about the fate of their favorite show) and badmouthing that show is something you simply don't do if you know what's good for you. I'm too tired to type up my rant right now, though. I'll probably do it in the morning. I'll just sum it up in one sentence for the time being: watch the show before making allegations about it.

i did, all 74 episodes on cartoon network (where no fan has gone before) and all new episodes from TWOF to 300 big ones. i am not just some show trasher. i loved futurama too, just want to know what you think is better out there as it compares to futurama.
also beamer, i want to know how other good shows relate to futurama. i think inuyasha is a prime example of this, what do you think? the mods will move this if they deem it apropriate, just play along and post, not like they will repremand you for stating what shows rank up there with futurama in quality, will they?

Also - there are only 72 Futurama episodes - not 74. And you couldn't have seen ALL of them on Cartoon Network anyway, as they don't show any episodes that FOX haven't.

You say there's no continuity in Futurama. Obviously, you don't watch closely enough. There are several storylines that advance throughout the show, such as the Fry/Leela relationship, the Amy/Kif relationship, and Fry's involvement in saving the Universe. Plus, there are plenty of little (and not so little) elements that "connect" the show. It's not just a bunch of self-contained episodes that are loosely tied together by a common setting/theme and just happen to have common characters; Futurama is a very complex show.

That's because The Simpsons and Family Guy have no plot whatsoever.

As I see it, Futurama is indeed a great show because it has something for both the hardcore fan, and the casual viewer. In one episode, a casual viewer will find a delightfully entertaining experience. Yet the hardcore fan will not only find a delightfully entertaining experience, but also, character development. To quote Anarchist: "There are several storylines that advance throughout the show, such as the Fry/Leela relationship, the Amy/Kif relationship, and Fry's involvement in saving the Universe. Plus, there are plenty of little (and not so little) elements that "connect" the show. It's not just a bunch of self-contained episodes that are loosely tied together by a common setting/theme and just happen to have common characters; Futurama is a very complex show." Very true, Anarchist. I find the true beauty in these aspects is that their true potential and effect is really experienced by the hardcore fan. The Futurama writers do an excellent job in providing to all types of the Futurama viewer. Now this is where I feel that shows such as the beforementioned Inuyasha fall short. Since all the episodes are linked into one big plot/storyline, it would be hard for someone to drop in on, say, episode 50-something, and know what is going on. As I see it, after watching 100 episodes of shows such as Inuyasha, you only get one storyline. Where is the variety? Yet with Futurama, after 72 episodes you get 72 different, and unique stories. And the character and relationship developments that connect all the episodes. To me, this is what makes Futurama a true gem.

Its generally poor wisdom to compare animation productions between North America and Japan, for the simple reason that production philosophies and public perceptions are widely different. I'm a huge fan of Anime myself, but I recognize the special challenges that a creator has in trying to produce shows on this side of the Pacific. Animation require a large budget to produce, but the audience range for such material has typically been niche. Simpsons was the exception to the rule, and many gambled that that success could be expanded -but most if not all of these productions failed; The Critic, Family Guy, The PJs, ect. Its also true that most television producers in North America dislike the serial approach that one is more familiar with in anime, but which recently has also seen surprising success over here in the show '24'. The problem is, if viewers come into a series too late, or miss some episodes, they typically feel lost and will stop tuning in. It also creates problems in syndication. I wish things were different in this regard, but for the most part, the best we can hope for are 'story arcs' -an approach that proved popular with The X Files. For serial stories, we still have to turn to the BBC and to anime.
I don't actually see Futurama as a failure because it wasn't capable of exploiting the serial storytelling method. It would have been fascinating to see how such an approach would have been pulled off, but in terms of what we have been given, its hard to complain. Its a vastly entertaining show that has made me laugh a great deal more than Tenchi Muyo or Ranma 1/2 ever has, and manages moments of poingency that have matched anything found in more serious anime series.

Anime I just don't like. I can recognize that there's real quality in SOME of it (like with any medium, not ALL anime is any good), but its just not to my taste for the most part, so I don't bother with any of the anime stuff on television. Regarding Adult Swim's other stuff, most of it good but also fairly simplistic, or, shall we say, lacking in depth. Brak Show and Space Ghost are just awful anyway, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force is merely decent, but the better stuff like Harvey Birdman and Sealab is generally just "once in a while" material. Home Movies I haven't seen much of either, but from what I've seen its actually a very excellent show, and seems to have good continuity even. I rather like it, but not as much as Futurama. Family Guy was also a fun show, but for various reasons, still not as good as Futurama. Futurama still wins out.
That said, its always possible something as good or better then Futurama will come along (either on Adult Swim or, more likely, somewhere else), and in fact I'd predict that something probably will come along. But of course, nothing will ever match what Futurama specifically had to offer.

Okay, I'm too lazy to write my rant, so all I'm saying is if you want to tell us to move on and forget about Futurama keep it to yourself. And it still has a future, TBS and CN show reruns, Fox still has some to show, comics are still coming out, and a movie has taken in consideration. So shut up there.
And as far as contunuality goes, I gotta go with almost everythinbg said here, espicially Anarchist, Atticus, and getak. It's so rich in every aspect of a show. If you saw it in middle of the series you'd still enjoy it, if you're a big fan you'll see characters develop. All I can say is it's a unique and truly great show. No other show on Adult Swim, or TV for that matter, can match it. Don't tell us fans to move on.

Of the ones listed:
Inuyasha: Don't care Big O: Wha? Reign: What's wrong with homoerotic pantsless adventures? Everything, you say? Family Guy: Sucks. Sucks sucks sucks.
Various others: Trigun: Only show that's even in the same class as Futurama Home Movies: Good, but not that good. Lupin: Don't care Bebop: Don't care, but the fanboys sure are fun to annoy.
