Dark side of Warner Brothers:

A series of patriotic cartoons from WW II featuring Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, private Snafu and some other characters.  Nowadays, these cartoons would be found racist, because of stereotyping the Japanese.

Some early cartoons were quite racist of black people as well, I think Warner Bros was the most to blame. It didn't target African-Americans as sub-human, but at some points it did make one or two cartoons that today some may find racist too.

I have a couple of Private Snafu episodes from my project on the Cold War. First of all, the name alone isn't all that good for kids (Situation Normal All F***ed Up) but the stuff in the episodes, like Hitler, or Hitler being Satan, or the German spies... wow. I'll find the link to the episodes.

Dark side of Hanna Barbera... have you noticed that a lot of the stars had smaller male sidekicks that they spent all of their time with? Yogi had Boo-Boo, Hokey Wolf had Ding-a-Ling... it's like HB was the NAMBLA of cartoons.

I remember one private Snafu episode they showed in a documentary.  Snafu was lured into a whorehouse, and the woman's boobs were boobytraps...

Didn't the Hanna Babara charecters ever get confused as to how they could run along a ten foot long alley (or street or whatever) for about an hour? I know I would.

I was watching an old episode of Woody Woodpecker where he had to hide some Mafia guy from a dumb cop, and there must have been 40 different guns appearing every 4 minutes. Another example was a singing ep where black people were being portrayed as primitive musicians and stuff. However, WB does now have Static Shock, which had an anti-racism episode.

The Private Snafu series was produced by WB from 1942 to 1945.  These cartoons were produced for the US military and were only shown to GIs.  They were never shown to the public (they wouldn't have passed the censors anyway).  A complete collection is available on DVD.

WB produced over 1,000 cartoons before the studio closed in 1969.  Very few of these cartoons used racial stereotypes.  The WW2 cartoons did use oriental stereotypes, but there was a war on and the Japanese were the enemy.  Only about a dozen or so WB cartoons have been "banned" from TV.

The most noteworthy of the "banned" cartoons is Bob Clampett's masterpiece "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs".  It includes this politically incorrect gem "We rub out anybody $1, midgets half price, Japs free."

Yep falling to ones death is a great way to kill a villain without making the Hero a killer because they always reach out to try to save the villain (one of the good things about Aqua Man in Justice League, just let the villain drop after taking the weapon)

I think I've mentioned this somewhere before, but this was an actual line from an episode of "The Flintstones."

Fred: "Oh, Wilma, stop crying. The neighbors will think I'm beating you!"

I just saw that recently (in the past few months on CN), and I was shocked it was left in. I'm trying to find more about it, to make sure I wasn't hearing things. From what I remember, Wilma might have been hosting a dinner party with Betty, and Fred was jealous cuz of all the time the two women were with each other. Weird.

Oy vey, some of you are really sick you know that? Yes some of the old cartoons are racist, sexist and just plain bizzare without political correctness, hell I remember one where Daffy Duck thought his legs had been cut off (they hadn't) and was going to blow himself away, and not the only time a cartoon character put a gun to his head that I recall.

But some of these are crazy, guns and phallic objects connection? Yeah so they are but if that's the first thing that crops into your mind when you see them I think you're the one with the sick mind.

And these bloody claims of homosexual liasons between male characters, some how I doubt they're intentional, reminds me of Chasing Amy, (great movie, Kevin SMith is brilliant) anyone remember the scene where Banky and Hooper were arguing over wether Archie was gay? "Archie was the bitch and Jughead was the butch" Even Hooper had a better case for that than you guys have for all this bull-loany
