Season 16 is my least favourite season of all time. It amazes me that so many think of seasons 13-16 as the best episodes since the classic era.

I definitely wouldn't say it's as good as season 15, but 16 still has it's fair share of pretty good episodes (by post-classic era standards, of course) - Fat Man and Little Boy, Midnight Rx, Future-Drama, Don't Fear the Roofer, The Heartbroke Kid and Thank God it's Doomsday, to name a few. I'd definitely rank it higher than seasons 10-14, at least. And I really don't think the show fell into its permanent slump until 17 onwards (and even 17 isn't as terrible as what followed - just very average for the most part).

I really can't say which season I think is the worst, because 18-25 are all pretty much indistinguishable from one another in terms of quality; aggressively mediocre for the most part, maybe 1 or 2 genuinely good episodes a season and the occasional god-awful episode I'd never want to watch again...

As for the praise regarding seasons 13-16, I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about there? 15 is really the only season I see getting defended by fans on a somewhat regular basis.

In season 19, which is the mid 2000s now. And I'm trying to remember if I was actively watching these episodes as they aired. Not gonna lie it's weird that these are the episodes that were "new" during my younger days.

I still remember watching some episodes from seasons 7-9 on first airing as a kid. T'was a simpler time, when the experience of watching a brand new Simpsons episode wasn't always tinged with dread... :p

We've had this talk before, but I definitely disagree about season 16 being better than any season that came before it. By my money it was the clear low point at that point in the series., and was the point where each season became worse than the previous one consistently. It is though, because of that, also better than any season that came after it, and on rewatching it I was able to find some moments to enjoy. But even though I stuck with the show through season 18, I still recall 16 as being the major turning point where watching became more of an exercise in trying not to cringe than actually laughing.

I also think season 15 is slightly overrated. Personally I think it's better than the previous two seasons, but I think some people are so awe-struck by the fact that it's better than anything that came before it at all that they rank it far too highly. Placing it over seasons 10-12 to me is unthinkable.

I think I've ranked the post-season 8 seasons before as 10>9>12>11>15>13>14>16>everything else

I feel like quality drops constantly from season 8 on, with some exceptions like 15 being best after 12 and 17 not being as good as couple following seasons (or it could be better, i don't remember well enough). And it's probably due to decreasing amount of "classic feeling" in episodes.

Especially I think seasons 13-16 are in different level from seasons 17-20 and most recent seasons on a worse level than those.

Yeah, it's sad to see Season 10 is currently winning the most overrated Simpsons season of all-time on NoHomers. Honestly, the early solo Jean seasons should be winning easily, especially Season 15.
I suppose the argument probably is that the Al Jean seasons aren't really "rated" to begin with. Still, I'd say if even a single person likes them (which they do), then they're over-rated.

Season 16 is my least favourite season of all time. It amazes me that so many think of seasons 13-16 as the best episodes since the classic era.
To be honest, as much as I despise Al Jean's seasons, 16 is one of the better ones in my opinion, purely because it contains a handful of episodes that I don't hate: "Thank God It's Doomsday", "Don't Fear the Roofer" and "Future-Drama". Very few of Al Jean's solo seasons contain even one episode that I don't hate, so that's pretty impressive. The overall consistency of episodes might be lower in that season, but I can only really distinguish those later seasons by their stand-out episodes. The rest is all just utter crap.

As for watching the show as it aired, I think I started to see new episodes as they went out starting with season 3, but this was in the UK and on the BBC (as opposed to SkyOne which gets the episodes years ahead), so they were probably up to season 6 or so in the US.

Yeah, it's just bizarre people on there are saying Season 15 is better than Season 9. It boggles the mind. On the upside, they know the Scully seasons are a threat on there, possibly because more people are starting to realise that Scully's episodes, despite the wackiness, were much funnier compared to almost all of solo Jean's episodes.

I'm also with cyber_turnip on Season 16 being better than most Modern Simpsons seasons. It has three episodes which he mentioned that I thought were genuinely good. There's still alot of poor and mediocre episodes in there, but that's still quite impressive.

From season 13, onwards, the only episodes that I don't think are bad are:
"Treehouse of Horror XII" (7/10 - season 13)
"Treehouse of Horror XIII" (7/10 - season 14)
"Future-Drama" (7/10 - season 16)
"Don't Fear the Roofer" (7/10 - season 16)
"Thank God It's Doomsday" (7/10 - season 16)
"Springfield Up" (7/10 - season 18)
"Holidays of Future Passed" (8/10 - season 23)

To put that into perspective, the only episodes that I don't think are good from seasons 1-12 are:
"Dancin' Homer" (6/10 - season 2)
"So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show" (6/10 - season 4)
"Another Simpsons Clip Show" (5/10 - season 6)
"All Singing, All Dancing" (6/10 - season 9)
"Saddlesore Galactica" (5/10 - season 11)
"Missionary Impossible" (6/10 - season 11)
"The Computer Wore Menace Shoes" (6/10 - season 12)
"The Great Money Caper" (6/10 - season 12)

I'd love to hear your opinions on some of my favorite post-season 12 episodes...

"Little Girl in the Big Ten"
"Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge"
"I'm Spelling As Fast As I Can"
"Moe Baby Blues"
"The Monkey Suit"
"Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind"

"I'm Spelling As Fast As I Can"
"Moe Baby Blues"

"Little Girl in the Big Ten"
One of the better post-season 12 episodes. Lisa's storyline isn't awful, though Bart's is a bit stupid. It's full of bad jokes like almost everything from the solo Al Jean era, though.
6/10

"Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge"

I honestly hardly remember a thing from this episode, but I've got all my ratings saved from back when I watched them and whenever I've revisited episodes, I've usually felt more or less the same about them. My guess is that I don't like this one because it's poorly plotted, unfunny and most of the jokes are completely nonsensical - just like 99% of Al Jean's episodes. Anyway, I gave it:
4/10

"I'm Spelling as Fast as I Can"

This is definitely one of the best episodes from season 13, onwards. It's only a notch or two away from being one of the episodes that I list as "good", but it falls ever so short of the mark for me due to the plot not being amazingly interesting and, once again, bad jokes.
6/10

"Moe Baby Blues"

I guess the story isn't too bad for season 13, onwards, but there's nothing particularly special about this one that I can see. It's just unfunny rubbish like all the "modern" episodes.
5/10

"The Monkey Suit"

One of the better post season-12 episodes, but it suffers from the usual not-particularly-interesting plot and bad jokes and I seem to remember thinking that Flanders seemed a bit out of character. He just seemed a bit mean and almost aggressive. In previous episodes, he was very devout, but less severely.
6/10

"Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind"

This is probably one of the plotted episodes from season 13, onwards and it definitely stands as, once again, one of the better "newer" episodes. It just isn't very funny.
6/10

In case anyone cares, ther Al Jean episodes that I'd say are nearly but not quite good are:
"Weekend at Burnsie's" (13)
"How I Spent My Strummer Vacation" (14)
"'Scuse Me While I Miss the Sky" (14)
"Treehouse of Horror XIV" (15)
"I (Annoyed Grunt)-Bot" (15)
"The Seemingly Never-Ending Story" (17)
"Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Three Times" (18)
"Take My Life, Please" (20)
"Eeny Teeny Maya Moe" (20)
"Coming to Homerica" (20)
"Homer the Whopper" (21)
"The Bob Next Door" (21)
"Elementary School Musical" (22)
"Angry Dad: The Movie" (22)
"The Food Wife" (23)
"The Book Job" (23)
"How I Wet Your Mother" (23)
"Dark Knight Court" (24)
"Days of Future Future" (25)
"Brick Like Me" (25)
