I hear that the extended version of RotK will run 250 minutes, or 4 hours 10 minutes.  That's more than 45 minutes longer than the theatrical version.  I was personally hoping for the five-hour length they guessed at a couple months ago, but the exteneded version will still probably be even better than the original.

I always thought that RotK was way too short and the same goes for the other two films, personally i would be prepared to sit for full six hour length films but thats just me.

In a perfect world, ALL the footage would be edited, post-produced and put on a grand-spanking mecha DVD release. That would probably take up a few days... But with any luck, we'd get all of the stuff that was cut to reduce the length of the movies. When I saw the marathon (all three movies in a row at the movie theatre), it just seemed like I coul have gone on for days.

The next marathon will be longer.

I went to see it for the 2nd time today and I saw the first few scenes of just Smeagol and his transformation into Gollum (I had missed this bit the last time due to ticket problems).
It was really well done and Gollum looked even more like Andy Serkis in this film than the last one (if that's possible), I thought.

That bit at Minas Morgul when The Witch King comes out is friggin awesome, the screams were so loud and evil, I was grinning evil-like while the woman next to me had her hands over here ears!!  :evillaugh:

One point:
Instead of Aragorn saying "I hold your oath fulfilled" or whatever it was, he should have said:
"Now go into Mordor and kick the piss out of anything that moves, except for two hobbits!!"

I should be king dammit!!  :p

Agreed; that moment was in itself almost as badass as the entire Battle of Minas Tirith.  :D

The awesome swarming Dead over Minas Tirith kick that sequence just a notch higher, though.

Did anyone else notice the Haradhrim war chant when they were charging their Mumakil towards the Rohirrim?
That was a nice touch.

But then made me think: "Didn't they have ground troops too?"
"And what happened to the Easterlings, did they not get invited for the final push?"

On the Extended DVD, I hope!

I wondered about that too.  The huge army we see in Two Towers is reduced to a bunch of guys on elephants, which seem like great targets for catapults.

Not even to show off their comedy stylings?

And Legolas taking down that Mumakil by himself was very like Luke taking down that AT-AT by himself!

I'll disagree.  Now Eowyn taking down the oliphaunt by herself, THAT was like Luke and the AT-AT.

Actually, it was more of a curious mix of Luke vs the AT-AT and Wedge and Janson taking down the AT-AT.

But Eowyn is a normal human (not to mention a big sexy girl), whereas Luke and Legolas are super-normal (with Teh Force and Teh Hair respectively!)

Anyway, I know it's a bit early, but what extended scenes are we hoping for??

We know it will have Saruman.  It will also most likely have the Mouth of Sauron, and Gandalf's encounter with the Lord of the Nazgûl (which was in the trailer).  And I'm sure it will have minor extensions to scenes from the theatrical version.

Hopefully we'll see Theoden talking to Ghän-Buri-Ghän and the Rohirrim walking through the Druadan-forest.

And there really should be more scenes with Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and the army of The Dead outside the caves, particular the attack on the pirate fleet at Pelargir.

I don't remember any specific details from the movie, but maybe most of the Easterlings at Pelennor were among the part that got overrun and routed when the Rohirrim made their charge. In the book  the army that blocked the road for Theoden and his men in Anoria was largely made up of Easterlings and Orcs.

I imagine if they had the skirmish before coming to Pelannor, it would have slowed the idea of "here's the cavalry" and the pace of the theatrical version, same goes for the Ghän-Buri-Ghän scenes.
It's been a while since I've read ROTK, when that cool scene where they all leave their camp and rush off, is that before or after they talk to Ghän-Buri-Ghän?

AJ: Oooh, I didn't know Gandy and Witch-Kingy had a scene! Is it good?

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured, but since the Extended DVD's are mostly for the fans those scenes wouldn't matter since we all know what will happen.

The scene with them rushing and leaving camp was from Dunharrow if my memory serves me well, meaning it's well before talking to Ghän-Buri-Ghän.

Nothing much happens between Gandalf and the Witch-King, at least in the book.  They talk a bit, but then the Rohan people arrive and the Witch-King takes off to re-evaluate his strategy.

Someone named Wi Kuki Kaa was cast as Ghân-buri-Ghân (yes, it's ˆ and not ¨), so they at least filmed something with him.

Since their appearance at Minas Tirith was supposed to be a surprise, we might not see that.  But I do hope for more with Legolas and Gimli at least, since they didn't feature all that prominently in the theatrical version.

It looks like the EE will be 4 hours and 10 minutes long. Not as long as I expected.

So, the Houses of Healing should be there (10 minutes) and the Saruman scene(7 minutes). There's a big posibility that the Mouth of Sauron will appear (4 minutes). There's also the Withc King and Gandalf confrontation (2 minutes). There should be more endings (5 minutes). The Ghan-buri-Ghan scene (5 minutes). That should amount to 33 minutes of new footage. Of course, this is all speculation.

I seem to remember mention of a scene with a Peter Jackson cameo that had been cut. Something about him being one of the pirates, and being killed by Aragorn.  I hope that scene makes it (if it exists, that is).

That'd be cool, like one of their acceptance speeches (MTV I think) when he accepted the award for Viggo or someone, then Aragorn and Theoden came in and chased after him with their swords!  :laff:

Looks about right if they do his size correctly.

That coming on to a movie-specific thread only to state that you hate it and depart is silly? I mean, I don't watch anime so I don't go posting "I hate anime!" in that thread. I figure they want to discuss they're chosen entertainment, so I'll leave them to it.

Now, if I/you/anyone felt the need express hate toward LOTR and explain it, well, that's altogether different.

The trouble is there's nothing in particular about the movies that I can place a finger on and say "That's crap".  I just don't think they're that good.

Have you ever been the only sober one at a party?  Because that's how I feel about LotR.  The hype surrounding the films is unprecedented.  Practically everybody's been "ooh"ing and "aah"ing about it for three solid years.  And I just don't get it.  I've watched the first two movies.  Sure, they're okay movies.  Sure, the effects are good.  I just haven't seen anything in them that warrants the amount of attention they've been getting.

Ummm.... only the fact they're from some of the best well written books (upon which even D&D to many extents is based)... and only the fact that so much effort has been put in them to make them as realistic as humanly possible...  I think you're just in denial of the hype, and I understand that, but the truth of the matter is, if you ever read the books (you'd had to have liked them to really keep reading considering the length), then these movies were important in establishing an on screen correlation of the story....

Yeah Fred, it's like seeing one of the best (and one of a lot of people's favourite) books being realised in live action.
[Fry] Oh! OOOOOHH!! [/Fry]

Like when the Hitchhikers Guide movie comes out (assuming it'll be the best thing ever), it'll be cool to see it on the big screen (also assuming the TV series never existed and/or was shown on a big screen).  :p

Anywhoo, my question: Is there any particular order of the Middle-earth related books?
The Silmarillion is first, right?
But what about Tolkiens other books or Chris Tolkiens books?

As far as I know, most of Christopher Tolkien's stuff is historical -- like a Middle-Earth encyclopedia or something.

Christopher Tolkien's stuff is sort of like a Middle Earth library. There are a lot of books with Tolkien's early notes, and different ideas that he had for the history of Middle Earth. There's also a sort of sequel to The Lord of the Rings called The Return of the Shadow (or something like that) that deals with Aragorn and Arwen's son. But Tolkien never finished it so it's there for historical purposes basically.

Now the order is: 1. The Silmarillion 2. The Hobbit 3. The Lord of the Rings.

Christopher Tolkien's books and The Unfinished Tales happen in different times, but they're basically part of The Silmarillion. There's another book called The Adventures of Tom Bombadil but I don't know too much about it.

I may be the only one, but I agree, at least in regards to the movies. The books, are some of the greatest I have ever read, but the movies focus too much on the action. Two thirds of Return of the King was the giant battle, which occupied maybe a few chapters in the book. Peter Jackson cut down on a lot of the dialogue and storytelling to give us giant special effects, but I just think the spirit of Tolkien is lost.
