This week's TV Guide has chosen the Top 50 cartoon characters, according to some arcane selection procedure that probably involves tea leaves, chicken entrails, and repeated blows to the head.

4: Beavis & Butthead
5: The Grinch
6: Fred Flintsone & Barney Rubble

10: Eric Cartman
11: Bart & Lisa Simpson
12: Fat Albert

TV Guide obviously doesn't know shit about what they put down.  The first three seem correct (at least as far as their impact)  But Beavis & Butthead down it seems they were just drawing random names out of a hat.

So what? I think its got a few good characters. It should have Bender there though but you don't see me complaining. Is ignorance bliss for all of you?

My own comments:

WHERE THE F*CK IS BENDER?!

Beavis and Butthead are 4th? Bwah?

Spongebob's cool, but 9th? Bwah?

Does Top Cat really belong on a "best of" anything list?

How many of these characters were actually created FOR TV, anyway?

And if they had to pick a bossy blond girl with pigtails, couldn't they have chosen Helga Pataki? At least she has depth.

Hello? I am not seeing any Ninja Turtles on that list. What about He-Man, Rick Hunter, Optimus Prime, Danger Mouse and any variety of smurfs or gummi bears? The 80's did exist people. Oh, and Alvin doesn't cut it, that show was bloody grating.

I'm not so much annoyed at the lack of Futurama characters up there, but some of those cartoons are terrible, terrible creations (those I've actually heard of!!!), and Tom & Jerry I consider to be infinitely better that atleast 30 or so of those cartoons.
I agree with Ben, there are a lot of significant cartoons from the 80's that have been completely over-looked. Danger Mouse, despite being a shoe-string budget show and British (Good heavens no!) I think is the best '_____ Mouse' ever and the fact that shows like He-Man - that most children of the 80's grew up on - are missing is bloody ludicrous. Where the HELL are the Transformers!?!

1.Crow (MST3K)
2.Bender (Futurama)
3.Peter Griffen (Family Guy)
4.Rocko (Rocko's Modern Life)

That's the first four I can think off

I agree DM should be there, he was cool.

I haven't heard of a lot of those, the order does seem strange and there are major omissions  :(

Wow I swore almost anyone who is interested in animation realized that the Hanna Barbara cartoons of the 60' and 70's were horrible cheep cartoons with no plots. Also is it Best or most Influential there is a huge difference. I agree there should be some 80's cartoons, if they put in Rugrats and Pokemon (not even going to mention Anime...) they should have Transformers and Ninja Turtles, they were almost as big.

Well, a third of these characters are completely unknown to me.

Tom and Jery 50th!?! And Beavis & Butthead 4th? I really don't know whether I should laugh or cry.

Donald Duck as 43rd? Below Mr Magoo (what is he doing on this list in the first place)?

No room for Darkwing, huh? Or Futurama characters? Who own TV guide anyway? FOX?

A similar discussion turned up on PCC Text concerning a "Top 50 shows of all time" list that:

1)Omitted Star Trek altogether
2)Contained no non-US shows
3)Placed M*A*S*H in 25th place

I think this message said everything about this kind of poll:

Bender should definitely be up there.  I mean, he's just...Bender.  Indescribable and worthy of recognition.  Beavis and Butthead...well, yeah, they should be up there, but I wouldn't rank them as high.  As for Spongebob...Eep!  :hmpf:   Top Cat is one of the most annoying cartoon characters I know...And to TV Guide for the last comment, "Change the list, geek bait, or you'll have to answer to old Betsy and the the Five Avengers!"  :D

Checked the list again, read an article on it on CNN, looks like it is the best cartoons of all time. This makes no sense the series that are in there, for one thing they mix Shorts that were written to be in theaters with much cheaper children's material. If Bugs and Popeye are on this list then where are other characters from film, like Bambi, and The Iron Giant? They only focus on one country, no English or Japanese cartoons on there (with two exceptions) Also they have no real knowledge of any history. I am wondering where Johny Quest is, I thought that show was a big breakthrough in American animation, more serious. I have a feeling Space Ghost is on there for his talk show (which I love and it deserves to be near the bottom of a top 50 list) If they wanted to make themselves feel smarter they should have thrown in some series like The Maxx which is great and has a cult following.

Here are the series I would have taken out or changed their position.
5: The Grinch, great short but I still don't know why this makes him better or more important then the rest on the list, choose another Chuck Jones character
7: Angelica Pickles, Rugrats is very influential, but not #7, lower on the list
9: Spongebob Squarepants, Why is this show #9? I have seen a few episodes of it, not that bad, probably would be the closest thing to what I would make if I made a cartoon show, but 9? It sort of is flavor of the month.
15: Pikachu, If the electric Rat is here then where is the Gundam? It is very influential in American animation.
18: Top Cat: Wha? Why is this on the list
21: Gerald McBoingBoing (who?) searched in IMDB found out it is an old short done by Dr. Seuss and the guy behind Rocky and Bullwinkle looks like it is good, but see the Grinch for reasons why it shouldn't be in the top 50
23: Underdog, not that bad but not that special either, the other cartoons on at the time were just painful to watch.
24: Josie and the Pussycats, Not sure why it is that good, but it was one of the better of the Hanna Barbara 70's cartoons, either that or they just  are still in the back of the list makers mind with the movie that just came out.
25: Heckle & Jeckle, these were on when I was a kid, never saw what was so special, just a couple of crows.
27: Winnie the Pooh, This is until recently a movie character that Disney bought the rights for very cheep and marketed into the ground, making the heirs of the creator sue Disney...
29: Mr. Magoo, This was an entire series based after one joke, Why?
30: George of the Jungle, Like Underdog, other then a great sight gag (watch out for that Tree *WHAM*) the series wasn't that good, and the shorts were even worse
32: Tome Terrific (again, who?) I think this was Tom Terrific, which I searched for on imdb and found that it was an early cartoon from the 50's on Captain Kangaroo
42: Wonder Woman, Why is she on this list? Bats and Supes always had shows but she was always in with the Justice League characters (either Super friends or JL) And if you say Super friends should be on here you should be shot
43: Donald Duck, Why us he more important then Darkwing, I like Darkwing Duck, easly the best of the new Disney cartoons but Donald has history
48: Bobby Hill, KotH, I personally hate it but it does deserve some credit
49: Speed Racer, What no Astro Boy?
50: Tom & Jerry, Anyone know any reason why they are so low on the list, the old shorts can be great, and are more influential then most of the cartoons on this list

Wow wrote a lot more then I meant to

I love lists like this.  It gives us something to complain about.

After examining this list, I think this committee must have been indulging in mind-altering substances.

1.  Bugs Bunny - no argument here
2.  Homer Simpson - ditto (or is it "D'oh!" )
3.  Rocky and Bullwinkle - all-time classic
4.  Beavis and Butt-head - not on my list!
5.  The Grinch - doesn't belong near the top of this list.
6.  Fred and Barney - Yabba Dabba Do!
7.  Angelica Pickles - so, Rugrats is now in the same league as the Flintstones?  How many drags did they need to come up with this?
8.  Charlie Brown and Snoopy - OK by me
9.  SpondeBob SquarePants - musta been some goooood weed in the old bong
10.  Cartman - give me a break!  Not even in my top 100
11.  Bart and Lisa Simspon - Homer needed company
12.  Fat Albert - Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, this one's got to go!
13.  The Powerpuff Girls - maybe in 20 years, but not now.
14.  Daffy Duck - how could anyone rate Daffy this low?
15.  Pickachu - Ok, the yellow rat should be on the list, but not this high.
16.  Gumby - green is good
17.  Betty Boop - deserves a higher rating than this.
18.  Top Cat -  now, I love TC and the gang, but they don't deserve to be this high on the list
19.  Mickey Mouse - Should be in the top 5, no question about it.
20.  Popeye - well, blow me down!  Should be higher
21.  Gerald McBoing-Boing - here's a strange; an Oscar winner from the early 50's with UPA studio, but almost forgotten today.  I don't think he'd make my list.
22. Scooby-Doo - probably the most popular character to emerge from Saturday morning; love 'em or hate 'em, the gang belongs here.
23. Underdog - doesn't make my top 50
24. Josie and the Pussycats - huh?  not even in the top 100!
25. Heckle and Jeckle - the only decent thing Terrytoons ever did; keep 'em, but not this high.
26. Arthur - well, I guess PBS needs one
27. Winnie the Pooh - oh, bother!
28. Felix the Cat - the first animated cartoon superstar, he deserves top 10 billing.
29. Mr. Magoo - maybe at the bottom of this list
30.  George of the Jungle - watch out for that tree; where's Super Chicken?
31. Ren and Stimpy - put 'em to sleep
32. Tom Terrific - deserves mention for creativity with very limited animation; remember him from Captain Kangaroo?
33. Tweety and Sylvester - better than most of the ones rated above them on this list.
34. Bill (the Law) - should have been repealed.
35. Space Ghost - deserves recognition for starting the superhero cartoon craze of the late 60's.
36. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo - ok by me.
37. Mighty Mouse - not on my top 50
38. Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner - deserves higher than this
39. Superman - OK, especially the recent series
40. Batman - once again, recent series have been great
41.  Daria - OK
42. Wonder Woman - not even with the push-up bra.
43. Donald Duck - deserves top 10 billing
44. Alvin - not on my top 50
45. Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale - deserve much, much higher; Moose and Squirrel would have been nothing without the villians (where is Fearless Leader?).
46. Woody Woodpecker - OK
47. Porky Pig - deserves better than this
48. Bobby Hill - you're kidding, right?
49. Speed Racer - first Japanese import, so we'll give it a pass
50. Tom and Jerry - the most Oscar winning team in cartoon history and they rate them last?  Incredible!

Bender deserves recognition! And I think Leela is a pretty milestone character too. She's like, the only cartoon woman I've heard of who takes everything seriously 98% of the time. But Bender should be up there! Bugs Bunny and Homer are great for the top, but Beavis and Butt-head at #4? Didn't the result of everyone hating the show cancel the show? Here's some more wrong things:
5: The Grinch (All right, it was a great special, but it's only one cartoon and it should be in the 30s or 40s, NOT AT #5.)
7: Angelica Pickles (I can't even stand to watch her!)
8: Charlie Brown & Snoopy (OK, now THIS should be at #4. Have we all forgotten about how long and great this strip was. But if this list is just for the animated shows, then it's OK here. The show wasn't at all as great as the strip)
10: Eric Cartman (Kenny should be here!!!)
14: Daffy Duck (WHAT? Daffy is should replace The Grinch at #5! He's brilliant! Especially in those ones with him and Bugs trying to convience Elmer that it's Rabbit Season or Duck Season, respectively. I just saw a Toon Heads special that grouped the trio of them together and I laughed my ass off. DAFFY ROCKS!!!)
15: Pikachu (All right, if we're talking about video games, this can be on the list. But the cartoon sucked major ass.)
19: Mickey Mouse (all right, I think the cartoon mouse who's survived this long, around 80 frickin' years, deserves a better rank than this
38: Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner (MORE recognition!)
43: Donald Duck (my favorite Disney character! He should be in the top 20!)
47: Porky Pig (higher rank, higher rank!)
48: Bobby Hill (all right, anyone on Futurama is funnier than him)
50: Tom & Jerry (I'm going to have to agree with Dave on this one)

I also agree with above posts. The Angry Beavers and Rocko need to be on this list! And ZIM rocks too! AND WHERE'S BENDER?!?! I think the TV Guide people can see their large intestines, seeing as how their head is REALLY FAR up their asses.

The first three I have no problem with, but there's a glaring omission IMO.  Duckman!  C'mon, he's a duck detective who lives with the twin sister of his dead wife, has a pig for a partner, three kids in two bodies and a comatose mother-in-law with so much gas she's a fire hazard!  (Duckman would probably get along great with Bender.  They both like drinking, smoking, and women.   ;))

Wow, Tom and Jerry are all the way down at 50th place. I thought the classics will have an edge over most of the new cartoons of today. Top 3 I have no problem with. Beavis & Butthead, Bobby Hill, Duckman, and Angelica Pickles should be kicked to the curb.

Pikachu is the only anime character to make it to the top 50. I don't know if I should be disgusted or just relieved that they didn't classify anime as 'cartoons' here.

1: Bugs Bunny. Oh yeah, he's the classic.
2: Homer Simpson. No complaints.
3: Rocky and Bulwinkle. Classics.
4: Beavis and Butthead. Sitting giggling for hours does not qualify as a decent cartoon. They shouldn't be in the top 50, let alone 4th. Who would be called "Butthead" anyway?
5: The Grinch. No comment.
6: Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble. I like them. Don't know if they should be so high though.
7: Angelica Pickles. NO! NO! NO! Why?
8: Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Very good if they're talking about the comic strip.
9: SpongeBob SquarePants. He's a sponge. 'Nuff Said.
10: Eric Cartman. Not much of a South Park fan, so no comment.
11: Bart and Lisa Simpson. Somewhere in the top 20.
12: Fat Albert. Who?
13: The Powerpuff Girls. No. :: Shudders at thought of movie::
14: Daffy Duck. Much higher.
15: Pikacu. There's got to be one anime charecter. but why him?
16: Gumby. What's a Gumby?
17: Betty Boop. Got to be here somewhere.
18: Top Cat. Yay! Top Cat!
19: Micky Mouse. Got to be somewhere.
20: Popeye. Got to be somewhere.
21: Gerald McBoingBoing. Who or what?
22: Scooby Doo. It's so predictable but we love it!
23: Underdog. Keep goin' under.
24: Josie and the Pussycats. No comment.
25: Hecle and Jeckle. Who?
26: Arthur. I like it, but why is he here?
27: Winnie the Poo. Yeah, sure. Why not?
28: Felix the cat. Yep.
29: Mr Magoo. Who?
30: George of the Jungle. No comment.
31: Ren and Stimpy. What a bad cartoon!
32: Tome Terrific. Who or what?
33: Tweety and Sylvester. Very good, apart from the mystery show.
34: The Bill. No comment.
35: Space Ghost. No comment.
36: Yogi and Boo Boo. Much higher up.
37: Mighty Mouse. He's a classic!
38: Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner. Much much higher.
39: Superman. No comment.
40: Batman. No comment.
41: Daria. Yay!
42: Wonder Woman. Me'h....
43: Donald Duck. Hate him....
44: Alvin. Such a confusing cartoon.
45: Boris and Natasha. Who?
46: Woddy Woodpecker. Should be higher.
47: Porky Pig. Way way way way higher.
48: Bobby Hill. Who?
49: Speed Pacer. No comment.
50: Tom and Jerry. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay higher!

20: Popeye - classic too.
21: Gerald McBoingBoing - (who?). yes who?
22: Scooby-Doo - scooby doo is fun. apart from the new movie, maybe.
23: Underdog - ...
24: Josie and the Pussycats - no comment.
25: Heckle & Jeckle - don't know em.
26: Arthur - don't know him either.
27: Winnie the Pooh - winnie the pooh should be nr 2. that simple.
28: Felix the Cat - no comment.
29: Mr. Magoo - *sigh*
30: George of the Jungle - ok. if you insist.
31: Ren & Stimpy - these guys should be in the top 10. they definately redefined the word "weird" and maybe "disgusting" if you think about cartoons.
32: Tome Terrific (again, who?) - yeah, who.
33: Tweety & Sylvester - apart from the fact, that i wish sylvester would eat that bird, this is ok.
34: The Bill (from Schoolhouse Rock) - no comment.
35: Space Ghost - coast to coast. oh yeah.
36: Yogi Bear & Boo Boo - why did they put them in the list (along with pikachu)?
37: Mighty Mouse - no comment.
38: Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner - funny as hell. should be in the top 10. meep meep.
39: Superman - a classic. should be in the  top20 at least.
40: Batman - another classic superhero.
41: Daria - it doesn't get any more sarcastic. i like sarcasm. therefore, i like daria. but i still think this place is ok, daria's impact on cartoon wasn't that big.
42: Wonder Woman - super heroines must have their place in the top 50 too. so there we go.
43: Donald Duck - should switch places with mickey mouse.
44: Alvin (the Chipmunk) - oh no. their voices are like...! aaahhh!
45: Boris & Natasha - who?
46: Woody Woodpecker - hmm. ok.
47: Porky Pig - well, another loony toon. i suppose they're all classics.
48: Bobby Hill - who?
49: Speed Racer - don't know em.
50: Tom & Jerry - that's ok. a classic, but not very creative.

what is missing? futurama! and akira! and itchy and scratchy too  ;)! and why on earth the powerpuff girls or pikachu? god, why?!

I'm not too distressed by the lack of Futurama. TV Guide hates the show, plus thanks to Fox's gayness, the show doesn't have much of a mainstream presence.

On the other hand, they did include Bobby Hill. I would say that more people know who Bender is than Bobby Hill, but maybe I'm being too positive about society.

Am I the only one annoyed at their inconsistencies at grouping characters? The number two spot is Homer Simpson, rather than the Simpsons family as a whole. So I think "ok, they are only doing single characters...that makes sense".

But then they have Bart AND Lisa listed for number eleven? If they are going to group up more than one character, why not just have "The Simpsons" as one spot on the list?

And then they have the Powerpuff Girls and Josie and the Pussycats. Stupid TV Guide.

3.Peter Griffen (Family Guy)
4.Rocko (Rocko's Modern Life)

Why do you have a live action puppet listed as the number one CARTOON character? I don't think his cameo on Futurama counts.

Actually, yeah. I'm pretty sure I read about Rupert Murdoch buying out TV Guide a few years ago.

5: The Grinch (All right, it was a great special, but it's only one cartoon and it should be in the 30s or 40s, NOT AT #5.)

Actually, they made more than one Grinch cartoon. I think one was Halloween themed(but I could be wrong), and then they had one where he meets The Cat In The Hat. I don't think they were directed by Chuck Jones, and were obviously not very memorable.

this is the worst character ever made.  annoying and sicking.  wtf is wrong with them? why is it on the top 10000000000 list?  invader zim is 1000000000 times better than that freak of a character called Spongebob Squarepants.

And where the heck is bender? bender is like so original yet he;s only a stupid little robot.
