Okey this is a Tenchi thread (Tenchi Muyo translates into no need for heaven and Earth and This way up). Anyway looking at the anime pic thread I noticed allot of the pictures were of Tenchi. So I thought I'd go out on a limb and make a thread to the show, possible doomed to faliure.
Down to the point I have a few questions to ask concerning your opinion of the show , okey here goes.
1) Your favorite character
2) Favorite series.
3) Favorite movie
4) and last but by no means least who  should Tenchi choose.

I plead with the moderators to give this one a chance, i've seen allot more stupid threads continue in perpetuity.

Hey, a Tenchi thread!  Great idea, Wu.   :D

In answer to your questions:

1. My favorite is Mihoshi.  (You probably figured that out from the anime pic thread, right?)  Her favorite activities are eating, sleeping, and watching television.  I can relate.

2. I'd have to say my favorite is the OAV's.  The characters just seem more well developed in the OAV's.  On the other hand, the first TV series (Tenchi Universe) has two main advantages over the OAV's, there's a lot more of it, and it has Kiyone.  The same goes for Tenchi in Tokyo, I guess.

3. Well, I really do like the first movie a lot.  We finally get to find out what happened to Tenchi's mother.  Also, I like how Tenchi's dad, Nobuyuki, is portrayed.  Usually, he's just in the background, but in this movie we see that, in his own way, Nobuyuki is a hero, too.

However, the first movie isn't my favorite.  My favorite is the second one, Manatsu no Eve/Daughter of Darkness.  It's the shortest of the three films, but somehow all of the characters get their fair share of screen time.  There's just something about this one that I really like.

The third movie is kind of, well, strange.  I had to watch it a few times to really get it.  It's rather slowly paced as well, but I did like the ending.

4. I think the sensible thing for Tenchi to do, would be to choose Sasami, after she's grown up a bit, of course.

Incidently That's a good use of Tenchi's Name

Hmm great a Tenchi thread.....wait a minuet I wrote this, my memory sucks. Anyway odd to answer my own questions but here goes.
1)Washu (OVA) I jst really like her character
2)Tenchi the tv series (universe) I just thought the ending was great and there were some fantastic episodes, for exaple No Need For Ryoko was brilliant.
3)Tenchi Muyo in Love 2. yes it was slightly weird David but I thought the plot worked really well. Granted it did not use as many Tenchi cliches, i.e Ryoko and Ayeka fights, but that was not a bad thing in my opinion, I think it showed a muturiy in the characters. This maturiy could also be seen it the character designs, simpler but more mature. I also really liked the ending.
4) I think I'll agrre with most tenchi fans i know and go with Ryoko. To me it just seems obvious and I could go into a long explaination why but I'll save that for later.

Anyway while surfing i found this site http://www.tar4ever.envy.nu/quiz.html
Which is a quiz to see what charater you are most like. Since I have nothing to do at the moment I did it. I came out as Ryoko ewhich frankly surprises me. It said
You are Ryoko! You are strong, attractive, playful, and sometimes rude. You don't show much kindess, but you really are kind.
Hmm interesting.

Kryten, why would you want to close this thread?     Is it against the rules to have a Tenchi Muyo! thread?

Wu, I never said I didn't like TMiL2.  I do like it.  It's very different for a Tenchi film, though.  Tenchi Muyo! usually combines comedy and drama, but there's relatively little humor in this one.  It's rather serious, actually.  Also, it focuses mostly on Ryoko and Ayeka.  Sasami, Mihoshi, and Kiyone all have very small roles in TMiL2.

That said, there are a lot of things I like about it.  The story is good, despite the slow pace, and it's nice to see Ryoko and Ayeka actually working together.  The ending is very good.  TMiL and TMiL2 are continuations of the TV series, and TMiL2 was intended to be the ending of the Tenchi saga.  (The end of the Tenchi Universe version of the story, anyway.)  In this respect, it works very well.  The ending brings everything full circle.

By the way, I took that quiz that you linked to.  Not surprisingly, it said, "You are Mihoshi!  You are clumsy, lucky, annoying at times, and carefree.  Your future depends on luck."

The points you raised kinda against the film are alos apparent in Tenchi Daughter of Darkness. Althogh kiyone adn mihoshi are present they only have minor roles in the film. Granted Sasami has a larger role but to be honest I am not a Sasami fan.
You are right the pace of the film is well done and I think it has a really nice sound track. Then again I have yet to come across any Tenchi insturmentals that really annoy me  :)

I guess the GP girls do have small parts in Daughter of Darkness, but to me at least, it's not as noticeable.  It's a short movie, and Mayuka gets most of the screen time.  Still, the Miho-Kiyo duo do get some good lines.

I think that Mihoshi and Kiyone are underused in general, in the OAV's, the TV series, and in the movies.  Of course, I'm biased.  They are my favorite characters.

Really, the only thing that I don't like about Daughter of Darkness is that it's too short.  It watches more like an extra-long episode of the show, than a movie.  I think they could have done a lot more with the concept, given more time.

I'm sure that I'm just as bored with the "wazzup" thing as you are.  I just thought that it was an amusing little thing to share with the other Tenchi fans here.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by AMV's.  Does that stand for anime music videos?  If so, I can't say that I've seen many of those.

Yeah sorry about that. Yes it does stand for Anime Music videos. The best palce I have found for them is http://www.animemusicvideos.org
some are better than others, the best one for Tenchi I've seen is "Every Breath you take"  by the Police set to Tenchi Muyo in Love.

I am not the biggest Tenchi fan but I do enjoy the series.

>1) Your favorite character
Washu-chan, great creative character, interesting that she is a mother and grandmother to the girls

>2) Favorite series.
OAV, Better animation, better character interaction, Ryoko naked every other episode...

>3) Favorite movie
Second one, I know this is not that popular but it seemed to work for me. Was fun and had amazing animation, wasn't as Star Trekish as the other two movies, reminded me more of the actual OAV (this is the only one that takes place during the OAV)

>4) and last but by no means least who should Tenchi choose.
Tsunami/Sasami, when she is older, looks like it is more essential for the plot.

Well that's two  votes for Tenchi to get with Sasami but evidence from the manga's and the mulitlpe series point elsewhere. If anyone has read the nineth volume "Quest for Money" there is pretty much a clear indication of who Tenchi likes the most same goes for the movies as well. Even though she is the only one I have ever seen Tenchi hit, he shares more tneder moments with her. Can you guess who i am talking about.

Wow, of all people, I didn't expect you to start a Tenchi thread! Okay, here goes:

1) Washu in the OAV, you gotta love her character, esp. her lack of respect for others when it comes to experiments (like gathering a 'sample' of Tenchi)

2) In descneding order
OAV (first place)
Tenchi in Tokyo (second)
Universe (third)
I can't wait for the third OAV to be released, the series will finally conclude!

3) Damn, I haven't seen any of the movies...

4) Ryoko, her and Tenchi will make a great pair!  ;)

Well, I agree that it's pretty obvious that Tench and Ryoko are meant to end up together.  However, the question was, "who should Tenchi choose?"  I think that a grown up Sasami would be a better match for him.

Of course, if I was Tenchi, I'd just run off with one (or both) of the GP girls.  But hey, that's just me.   :p

In the two tv series he obviously likes Ryoko, one of the reasons why I like the OAV you are not sure who he really is interested in. Ironically Ryoko has the best reason to love Tenchi in the OAV, watching him grow up. Ayeka and Tenchi have some moments together, Washu actually has a good reason to go after Tenchi, and Sasami has the Tsunami alter ego that makes her a contender. Even Mihoshi has a crush on Tenchi. Also the OAV has some very interesting dynamics, with the three goddesses and the whole two wife thing.

yeah the OVA had some good stuff going for it. On the Ayeka point, true she has some moments with Tenchi but she does seem to have motives to go after him rather than just love. Firstly she was in love with Yosho and Tenchi is his relative, Tenchi is Jurian royal family, it would annoy her father. In comparison to Ryoko who loves him for who he is.

I disagree.  I don't think Ayeka really has any ulterior motives for going after Tenchi.  At the start, she didn't like him at all.  Ayeka started to care for Tenchi after spending time alone with him in episode three.  Go and watch that episode again.  Ayeka's feelings for Tenchi may not be as strong as Ryoko's, but they are sincere.

Oh I agree, these emotions may be true. It just seems interesting that they intensify when she finds out what happened to Yosho. Her love for Yosho did seem very great, perhaps he will reveal his true form to her in the 3rd OVA that way both her and Ryoko can be happy  :)

I don't know if Ayeka would still be interested in Yosho, even if she knew that he hasn't really aged.  Remember that they were betrothed when she was still quite young.  I don't know if she ever really knew him all that well.  She may have been more in love with the idea of him, than with Yosho himself.

I think that Ayeka loves Tenchi for who he is, not just because he reminds her of the Yosho she once knew.  Ayeka isn't like Haruna, after all.  If she found out that Yosho is still young, I'm not sure that she would still feel the same way about him as she once did.

One of the things I like about Ayeka, is that, out of all the characters in the series, she's the one who actually evolves the most.  Compare her attitude when we first meet her in episode two with, for example, in episode twelve, when she volunteers to help rescue Ryoko.  She's no longer the haughty, sheltered princess that she once was.  A lot of things have changed for Ayeka since she came to earth, and her feelings for Yosho may have changed as well.

In any case, even if Ayeka would still want to be with Yosho, it's pretty clear that that's not what he wants.  He didn't want to marry her in the first place.  That was part of his reason for leaving to begin with, and that was 700 years ago, before he came to live on earth and had a wife and a daughter and a life of his own.  Yosho isn't quite the same person he once was either.  He has no desire to return to Jurai and be heir to the throne.  In fact, he seems to want Tenchi to take his place.

In the OVA I would probably agree with you that Ayeka evolves the most character wise. In the first TV sereis I would not. Through out Universe she remains quite prissy where as Ryoko developes allot to the point were she is willing to sacrifice her life for Tenchi.

Well yeah, I'm talking about the OAV version of Ayeka, of course.  In the OAV's, I thought Ayeka was a rather sympathetic character.  She has good reason to feel the way she does about Ryoko.  On the other hand, in Tenchi Universe, Ayeka is kind of, well, a bitch.  At least, she is towards Ryoko.

I really do like Universe a lot.  The story is longer, and it actually has an ending.  (And Kiyone is in it.)  When it comes to the characters though, I prefer the OAV versions.

Oh, I don't mean to offend you, Nurdy.  I like Ayeka too.  (Scroll up a bit, and read my earlier posts.)

What I mean is that, in Tenchi Universe, like most of the characters, Ayeka's personality is sort of a caricature of the one she has in the OAV's.

I think it's best to watch the OAV's first, before watching either TV series.  That way you get a better feel for who the characters are.   :D

Maybe, but that's usually because Ryoko is provoking her, either by trying to seduce Tenchi, or by doing something to deliberately piss Ayeka off.  In the OAV's we understand why they fight, but in Universe it just this feud that's been going on since they were kids.  I do like the scenes where both girls tell differing accounts of incidents from the past, though.

Kiyone: "Both stories sound so real.  I wonder which one is the truth."
Washu: "I know.  Both stories must be true."

Anyway, so what if Ayeka is a bitch?  What's wrong with that?  Asuka is a bitch too, and she's my favorite character from Evangelion.  Of course, she has good reason to act the way she does.  In fact, considering her past, Asuka is remarkably well-adjusted.

That's something I like about Evangelion, practically all the main character are mentally unballenced. I mean the "hero" is one of the most mentally unbalenced individuales in anime.
