It's not that I missed all of it.... it's that I wasn't looking for a subtle payoff to all of that.  Obviously Varys didn't want Baelish to have Sansa, and it wasn't far fetched to me for Ros to say what she did to Shae since she's been working with Baelish.... not even necessarily in a sinister, hateful manner, but more of hey Baelish is ambitious and dangerous sort of manner.... so then Varys and Baelish are at this speak easy by the throne, like they normally do, and I wasn't expecting "Oh check out these super reveals and what was REALLY going on this whole time!"  So the conversation was a bit of.... "hrmm.... it seems like they're talking about specific things in a subtle way, but I'm not really sure what specific things all these specific things are" and the bamf King Joffrey loves crossbows!  Also, now I don't remember if the Joffrey crossbow scene came during their conversation or after Tyrion asked Cersei about the Battle of Blackwater Bay, but obviously those things are connected... also I'm almost approximately where the show is in the books right now, so now I have like 3 memories of every event that occurs simultaneously. :O

Sounds like a good reason not to read the books and watch the show at the same time. I would also get way too confused.

...hodor

Best line in the episode.

Totally called that Hodor while we watched that episode! :D

Poor Theon. :nono:

You remember he killed children, right?  To be honest, a third of it is Robb's fault; he should have heeded his mother's counsel and never sent him to the iron isles.  Robb is clever, but he plots his own failures. :(

Hmm...winna you have convinced me not to read the books just yet. I read the Dexter novels while watching all of Dexter in one go and it was pretty crazy. Game of Thrones is far more involved with names I can't recognise until I see a picture of the person you're referring to, so, yeah. I'll leave the books for now..

When is Daenerys going to get to wherever she's going and kill/enslave everyone under the pretence that she is not enslaving everyone and rule the throne?

Doesn't she already have a couple of boats?

@any1else - In some instances, I think the show was better at characterizing some of the characters.  I don't think I felt a whole lot like I didn't know who the characters were while I was watching it because they introduced them pretty well and did a good job helping the viewer to identify with them in some way.  Reading the books has filled in more of that, but if I'd have read the books first, I think I might've gotten a little confused somewhere along the way personally.  Also, I think the show causes the audience to invest a little more emotionally, but that's also difficult for me to judge.

I have someone reading the books right now, for example (who hasn't seen the series at all yet), and I wonder if the end of the first book will be as powerful as it was when I watched the first season.

The worst part in all of this  is that I will finish the books soon enough, season 3 will end, and then I'll have no more new material to consume. :hmpf:

Did anyone else (not specifically Maz) think of Anchorman during the bear business? Where's Baxter when you need him?

Leaving the knife and Sansa kneeling are the two biggest complaints about this episode I have read so far with the leeching of Gendry's member a close 3rd.

Yes, for someone they want to lure into a state of comfort, putting leeches on his royal blood cannon was not the way to go, he is sure to have second thoughts about staying at Hotel "Weirdest-Boner-Ever".

In the books she didn't and it is taking as an act of defiance to the Lannisters.

I'm pretty sure the Lannisters didn't take it as an act of defiance, but it did give weight to the fact that Sansa didn't want to marry Tyrion and that Tyrion was taking on a heavy burden with his father's wishes.

There are lots of things at this point different in the show from the books... you might also be upset that Tyrion's eyes aren't different colours and that he's no missing 70% of his nose right now too. :o

As for Sansa not kneeling, I believe they traded that off for Joffrey removing the step stool.

Well, if you go to http://asoiaf.westeros.org and click on the season 3, 8th episode section you might find the 21 page thread that was made last night and closed today that had a bunch of people bitchin' about Sansa kneeling.  I for one couldn't care less.  I was glad to see Arya sort of smile and for Sam to finally earn his nickname.

also it wasn't raining while Arya and the Hound were going for a horse walk. :(

Also Sam was supposed to earn his nickname a long time ago... :(

And I totally understand why Sansa not kneeling is upsetting, but at the same time, in the show's framework, what happened was easily a substitute. (the book's version was better though)

Sam was supposed to earn his nickname a long time ago.

They're twisting the timeline a little to allow them to maintain the pace whilst stretching out the narrative. This is because if they don't do that, it's likely to catch up to the books and need to be placed on hold whilst GRRM finishes writing them.

So I've noticed.  They do quite a bit of skewing actually... I noticed a few characters' speeches from book 1 and/or 2 being used in season 3... basically in different contexts from when they were being used.

Ok what about this.  If the Red witch was able to determine all on her own that Gendry is Robert's bastard then wouldn't she be able to determine if Jon Snow is truly Rhaegar's son?

I remember when the King's Guard were looking for Gendry and the inflection of one of the lines was all wrong. Instead of "where is the bastard?" the line was delivered "where is the bastard?".

Well, it made me laugh at least.

All gems. The Bastard one actually had the very "bastard" I was referring to. "Thrones, yeah" kind of lost it a bit but the underlying theme is now exactly what I'll sing along in my head.

Wow. I mean, I'd hear the wedding referred to as the Red Wedding, and I knew some serious shit was going to go down, but...wow. That was easily the most intense moment of the entire show so far. I was gasping so much I could hardly breathe.

How on earth the finale is going to top that, I have no idea.

Edit: No music during the credits?

I think the book's setup was better.  For example, there was a reason the episode starts out with Robb Stark eating food in Walder Frey's castle.
