It's probably a perfectly fine show in its own right--many seem to like it--but I could never get past the fact that this was NOT the Daria Morgendorffer I remembered from Beavis & Butt-Head.
I liked that Daria; she was clever and bitingly witty, but the "new" Daria was a whiny pain in the ass that made me want to say, "Okay, fine: you don't know or do one damn thing except crap on people, yet the whole world's not fit to sniff your s***. Everything sucks, and everyone's stupid. Your parents take care of you, yet deserve nothing but your contempt. Poor baby. Here's a bottle of pills; go end our misery, ya cow."
Watching this one pilot episode said to me: "Remember the Simpsons episode Moaning Lisa? This is the series. It's the animated version of My So-Called Life. Screw it, let's watch Cops--at least it has dumbasses I can laugh at."
Maybe later episodes were better. Maybe I'm just the wrong generation for that kind of thing--the whole disaffected-teen routine was never my bag anyway. (It wasn't long before MTV dropped off my channel list, anyway. God, I miss Liquid Television.)
Maybe I'm just an old fart...(pulls pants up high) Hey you kids!! Get offa my lawn!.

I loved that show! Daria is sarcastic, and blunt. Yes the world isn't as bad as she makes it out to be, but its pretty close. And her parents don't really take care of her. Her father actualy tries to stay out of the parenting and her mother is too busy at work. Anywho I liked the show alot

Not trying to pick a fight--but I love a good rant. Forgive me. Originally posted by Erdrik: And her parents don't really take care of her. O Lord, smite this person one day with An Ungrateful Bitch-Child, that this person might toil long and hard to provide for it, shelter and protect it from harm, feed it, clothe it, educate it, love it and keep it entertained; that it might catalogue each and every mis-step this person makes in rearing it, such as all mortals may make in their foolishness; that one Thanksgiving dinner it might stand up, and address this person in front of all kith and kin, and scream; "Depart from me, ye cursed, ye filth! I know ye not! What hast thou done for me lately?" and run into its room and slam the door, mortifying this person unto death in front of everyone. What you mean is, they don't nuture her by making her the center of their lives and listening to everything she says, no matter how ass-stupid it may be. American culture's biggest mistake may turn out to be its idolization of self-absorbed, shallow teenagers. Humor me here: because they both feature volleyball games in the opening moments, let's compare Daria's pilot and Brian DePalma's adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie: Carrie White gets physically and emotionally abused by almost every person at school. She tries to hit the ball, but we see right away she is too withdrawn as a result of all the abuse--which invites more abuse. Then it's home to Momma, and a never-ending cycle of pain, humiliation, and terror. Daria sticks out her hand after the ball passes--deliberately. The camera zooms in for the title shot, capturing Daria's smug, self-satisfied smile. I f****d up your game for my own amusement. Eat me. She then returns to her nice home to sit in her comfy room with Jane, passing judgment on all the stupids and phonies--in other words, everyone outside the door. Poor, poor Daria. Poor poor poor poor Daria. Give her a thousand years, and she'll be Mom. Everyone, do yourself a favor: if your parents are still alive and didn't abuse, molest, sell, or try to kill you--find them and thank them for all they did for you. ...I still like Zits, which is kind of the same thing without the bitterness, lovelessness, and narcissism.

I simply ment she has something to be pissy about because of her surroundings. Sure this Carrie character may have had it worse, but do they live in the same town? do they have the same parents? were they friends as children? do they even know of each others existance? noooo its a comparative regional standard of living. Daria live in one little pocket of the world were the standard of living is different then another. And in her little pocket as she was raised/ grew/ matured/ whatever she made her observations about her enviroment. And since(I'm assuming) she has never really traveled to a different enviroment, she naturaly assumes the rest of the world is the same. As most teenagers do at that age. And I don't idolise self-absorbed, shallow teenagers! In fact I hate those kind of people! They should all be fired... out of a cannon... into the sun! Daria actualy makes fun of those types of people. Belittles them and insults them in anyway. Which is one of the reasons I like the show. /EDIT And I am quite grateful for my parents raising me.(Even if I dissagree with every word my father spews, I'm still grateful)
