I do not know how to grade this. It was well made, well acted, the visuals were awesome, and the plot was really interesting, but holy crap did it bum me out. I don't know what I was expecting from this movie, but Jesus Christ a movie has never put me in such low spirits like that before (especially because I wasn't expecting it).

So it lived up to its name, eh?

Ran
Wow, Kurosawas last epic based on Shakespeares King Lear with some influence of the Sengoku period daimyo Mōri Motonari.
An old Lord abdicates power to his three sons, and wants them to work together to rule the land, but one disagrees and is banished, and the other two soon betray the Lord and each other in a struggle for power, helped along by crazy bitch wife and ambitious generals.
For a film made 2 years after I was born it looks amazing, vibrant colours, fantastic landscape wideshots and charging cavalry battle sequences, Kurosawa is a master.
The drama and tragic plot twists keep it interesting and Tatsuya Nakadai with the help of some crazy face makeup plays the mad old Lord well.

Fazeshift you have horrible taste in film. All you watch is obscure arty stuff...what about Transformers 2? Batman & Robin? Oh, I guess because it's MAINSTREAM, it must be horrible, huh? You're such an uptight prick.

lol Josh, anyhoo Ran cost $12 million to make, it was as mainstream as you could get for 1985, with inflation it probably cost more than Transformers 3: Dorkbots On The Moonbase or whatever! :p

$10 million for Star Wars was low budget in 1977. Lrn2money, Faze.

Didn't FOX have to bribe theaters into showing Star Wars by only offering The Other Side of Midnight to those who agreed to present both?

No u! Wikipedia says Star Wars was $11 million, ha!

It also says about Ran: "With a budget of $12 million, it was the most expensive Japanese film ever produced up to that time."
So it was mainstream, just mainstream Japan style.  :shifty:

So, nothing even approaching mainstream then. As for the budget for Star Wars, I was within an order of magnitude, I was within rounding error, and I didn't look it up. I think I can be considered "close enough" with $10 million. :p

Did Monsters involve monsters, or was it one of those metaphorical titles?

@ DrThunder88 - Monsters had these weird giant floating octopus like creatures everywhere. It takes place in Mexico & southern US. Read the Wiki link I posted, especially under the Production section. I was even more impressed with the flick after reading that. Its not your typical alien invasion movie thats for sure.

Barely. From what I've heard you see the aliens once or twice from far away but they basically play NO part in the main plot. The alien invasion is basically just used as a setting for what the movie really is, a romance with a shitty twist ending.

Like in Manos: The Hands of Fate, where the entire vacationing family story just serves as a background for the main plot, which is about the couple snogging in their car.

@ JoshTheatre
IMO thats a bit of a shortsighted and inaccurate summary of the movie. Also, you see the aliens at least a dozen or so times. Sure, they arent constantly in every scene and the the complete focus of everything, but there is more to this movie than say if people were getting killed nonstop and everyone else screaming and running away. And i didnt think the ending had much of a twist at all. but i guess everyone sees things differently.

Well, that's good.  If I see a movie called "monsters," I want monsters falling out of trees.  I went to see Monster with Charlize Theron...big letdown...in more ways than one.

Monsters

Actually I was very surprised. As far as indie films go this was one of the best uses of a budget I've ever seen. The sets and scenery were just spectacular. As for the movie itself though...meh. The two main characters were likeable enough but they weren't at all interesting and hardly had any depth. For a movie that's essentially all about the characters and not really about the aliens, there needed to be a lot more, but there simply wasn't. As for the political messages in the movie, they try to be subtle but really aren't. Whenever the two main actors try to have a conversation that hints at a political message, the dialogue starts to feel awkward and out of place with the rest of the film. And the ending just kind of fizzles, it has no real impact. I don't think I would call it a bad film, but it didn't do anything for me.

Jūsan-nin no shikaku (13 Assassins)
Remake of a 1963 Samurai movie directed by Takashi Miike.
About a group of assassins brought together to kill a sadistic high ranking brother of the Shogun, who will soon become even more powerful, and kills and rapes at his will.
Miike has a horror movie background so he's not shy on showing how evil this douchebag is, think Amon Goeth with a sword.
So one of the Shoguns main lords gives a secret mission to a sort of retired samurai, Shinzaemon who gathers 11 samurai to kill the guy, and they pick up a bandit on the way to make it 13 assassins, they set up an ambush in a town and wait for the evil guy to show up with his 200 guards.
Epic fight scenes and probably the most amount of sword clashing, slicing, cutting and stabbing sounds I've heard in a movie, awesome.

Tangled, Burke and Hare, Four Lions... all very enjoyable.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire.... wow. Totally not very Disney. But also enjoyable. I'm going to give them all 7/10/. Except for Burke and Hare. That gets 9/10.

Sukiyaki Western Django... is crazy. Awesome crazy. It's a satire-cum-clone of spaghetti westerns. Everyone except one character is reciting their lines phonetically, by rote. There's violence, martial arts, gunplay and Quentin Tarantino. What more could you ask?

Hop

I wonder if they deliberately set out to make a movie with as little internal consistency as possible?

Grade: C

Rio

Too much filler, too many ancillary characters, (so consequently) not enough attention paid to the story arc of the two main characters. Darker in places than I would have anticipated but it did look gorgeous.

Grade: B

Just watched the whole night Star Trek, to be detailed Star Trek VI in the evening.  A
Saw it the first time (shame on me, it cabled+sattelited last year too and I missed it) :o.
Now I can be happy because I also have this great milestone of science-fiction on video! :D
And through the night I watched Star Trek Voyager, but I don't think it's that great. TOS entertains me a lot more.
