I'm giving all the anime-fans a chance to defend their obsession's honor. As you all know a large part of the reason I hate anime is because its crap to look at. So the challenge is simple. Show me some visually pleasing anime. And by 'show me' i DON'T mean post a message telling me to go rent so-and-so movie because there is no way I'd ever do that to myself. Post a pic and if its cool looking I'll be the first to say so, but don't be surprised if you post a pic and I promptly call it stupid, no offense to anybody but that's just the risk you take for partaking in The Great Anime Challenge. And if i don't like it don't get all offended and yell at me....::stares at a certain few:: because the whole point of this is to make me find some good in anime and you can't do that by yelling at me.
The clock starts.......now.

Does Final Fantasy X count?

I'm a big Outlaw Star fan, and it's really easy to follow because most of the time the main theme gets the backseat from an adventure that wraps up nicely in 30 minutes. I can show you some great pics, but the website doesn't allow links, so I'll give you the address:
 http://www.outlawstar.org

Make sure to look at the 'pictures' and 'universe' section, especially the technology pics.

i don't know if final fantasy counts. isn't that technically cgi from a video game? The movie don't count either cause i know that it was full cgi. But it is real pretty i do admit. outlaw star however is visually just like every other anime i've ever seen.

outlaw star was meh in my opinion... I'm into drama animes and anime movies.

My fave anime of all time is cowboy bebop.  I know you said you dont want to watch any or rent any anime, but seriously, the cowboy bebop movie is going to be released on video this month, go rent it.  OR watch cowboy bebop on cartoon network at 12:00AM on sundays and thursdays.

I also love noir and FLCL, which are both very well done animes.  Gundom wing was also a very good series  :)

Also, akira is one of the best movies ever made, anime or not   :p

the pictures of akira aren't that impressive. The guys head looks really really...round, with weird squinty eyes. the cowboy bebop dosn't look that good either but it does look a hell of a lot better then DBZ or sailer moon.
Come on people! Dazzle me!

bart182: going from right to left:
neat, mustache, mustache, ass, classy if not thin, SEE the dern EXPRESSION!  Realism out the window.  The artist is clearly talented, but the constraints of the anime style throws that away. :shudder:

VF, yeah, I've seen that shot before. All those tinted images (including the girl) appear in the end credits with some really soothing Japanese song playing in the background. Really nice.

OOH hey! Bart182, thats the pic I showed off! It's from FLCL aka Furi Kuri aka Fooly Kooly(English name). I don't really get VelourFogs comments from left to right. Those are lips, not a mustache. And if you knew the anime in question then you would totally take back the "Realism out the window." comment, because FLCL is the oddest thing I ever saw (even though it rules). She lives in a city that is built around a giant iron (like the one you flatten clothing with)and her friend has a robot that grows out of his head.

I can only think of one anime that I love with a passion: the Chrono Trigger FMV from the PSX re-release.

Look at their faces though and you might see a familiar resemblance. That's because the FMV are animated by the same company that animated DBZ.

Actually it is not the same company as DBZ, it is the same Author of the original comic. He designed all of the monsters and characters in the original game, and many look identical to DBZ characters.

I apologize if the image sizes are too large

Here is Slayers, not the best example of different character design but it is a funny as hell series.

Here are some pictures from Lain a very experimental hard cyberpunk series. These are both screen captures, the second one has some problems because of the format captured.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the more popular series. Here are most of the main characters

This is from a series called Oh (also Ah) My Goddess

Here are some better Bebop shots

I also recommend a lesser known series called Crest of the Stars, it is hard Science fiction and feels more like a novel then any other tv series I have seen (which is big coming from a Babylon 5 fan)

i agree with Velour. The anime style in general just kills it for me. The drawings of the girl aren't that bad but the other charactors look just like evey other anime. i think i'm just to big on photo-realism to ever be an anime fan

i like the style of the FLCL people, but see, the stupid "Anime expressions" kill it for me.  That's what i meant when i said realism.  I meant realism of the drawing style.  The picture below (i assume crono trigger?) makes me want to vomit (sorry nix, et al) but it just is so tacky.

I haven't seen any Chrono Trigger.  Besides, the CT characters were done by the same guy who did Dragon Ball Z, so I doubt you'd approve.  Although I have yet to see at cutscene that involves weird, anime-bug-out epressions . . .

It might have actually been a series in Japan, I dunno.  But on the PSX re-release it came with anime cutscenes.  Actuallly, though, I think those are the original character designs from the instruction book from the SNES.

There are new Final Fantasy and Star Ocean series but never Chrono Trigger. the cutscenes were made just for the game, see FF anthologies. Also the Final Fantasy series is horrible it reminded me of Digimon meets the Supermario Brothers Super Show.

yeah Final Fantasy is gorgeous. The plot to the movie was kinda boring but i was more then happy stairing at how even the strands of hair moved indepentently from each other in a photo-realistic way. Never seen the game though. And why do they call it FINAL fantasy when there's like...10?

::smacks self on head:: Did i forget to do that? The only actual hair complaint i have with anime is the way they animate the guys hair. Some of the girls actually have some semi-realistic hair design and movement. A few of them had some freaked up hair styles though. Serena from Sailor Moon had that weird double bun thing going. This girl i know from school used to have 3 feet of hair and would actually put it up in that style. She got some looks walking down the hallway. None from me though cause then that would be mean. and Venus is a nice Venus.

They call it final fantasy because every game has all new characters, locations, plots and universes. The only similaritys are a few creatures and some names. Every game is the last for those situations and characters. I like it because it stays fresh.

From what I've heard, they called it Final Fantasy, because it was Squaresoft's last ditch effort to keep from going bankrupt.

3D cutscenes are present in many FF games, but I think that's as photo-realistic as anime gets. If they did an anime series using CG as reaslistic as the FMV sequences, that would be awesome. It'd be hard keeping the production budget low, but I bet it will gather a huge audience.

And no, that wasn't a joke, that's what I was told, regarding Final Fantasy.

Exactly, and "odd" isn't exactly "realism" and if "realism" is "out the window" then it's not there.  You get me?
