Good grief. I can't believe I'm actually going to be the first person on this board to slate this show. Deep breath...

Okay, I'm gonna forego criticising the speed up/slow down wankery of this show, given that it doesn't actually affect the comedy per se (although it is a rather heavy-handed attempt to forge its own style), and get straight down to the actual comedy content. Where is it?

Acting-wise, it's a cross between your Office style naturalism and your Smack The Pony style overacting, neither of which are brilliant points of inspiration in themselves and neither of which gel together that well at all. Performance-wise, only Mark Heap and Michelle Gomez actually seem like they're doing any work - the rest just come across as so smug and laidback they quash any of the few 'gags' they're given.

As for the material, it's mostly throwaway sketches stretched over several minutes to the point where their underwritten nature is highly visible in the seams. Scenes like Tamsin Greig's character singing "You Really Got Me" to try and impress Rhind-Tutt ramble on aimlessly as though they couldn't think of a punchline for the scene so just told the actors to ham it up in the hope that something funny would emerge. An hour per episode is clearly too long, although even if it was a half hour show I'd be surprised if they managed to make it work.

Sorry if I've brought the whole thread down but someone had to restore the balance!

Burn me for what? Writing an actually thought-out critique? Not engaging in the usual levels of groupthink that apply to almost all mediocre Britcoms at the moment? Well thank christ for my asbestos heart is all I can say.

I respect your opinion, and of course you're allowed to say what you think. Still, I can't believe you can dislike this show so much! IMO it's the best on TV at the moment, and I actually look forward to it as a treat. Ah well, I guess it's not everyone's style of humour. But I just love that wackiness!

Out of curiosity, which episodes have you seen?

I think I watched the first four from Series 1 and the second one from Series 2. So I think it's fair to say I've given it a fair chance.

MOV have you been away from the board for a while?

Anyhoo, respected opinion MOV, which you're entitled to, but I love the show, I don't think that the characters are too annoying (nor the actors who play them.)

You're completely right about Heap and Gomez, they are the stars, and their performances are understated (yes, even Statham, in the hands of another actor, he'd be played WAAAAY over the top) which I think is the key to their success.

Oliver Chris is criminally underused, Sarah Alexander not so, as she rarely has anything to do (the most recent episode and the party ep from S1 is the most she's been in it).

Yeah, though by the way you asked that question it sounds like I've been here in spirit (ha ha ha).

I'm not the kind of guy who picks arguments for arguments sakes here but I'm flabbergasted that someone would think Heap's performance is understated. The only reason I would think anyone would come to that conclusion is down to the fact that he gibbers his way through his words rather than delivers them intelligably - demosntrating that he's ultimately torn between quirkiness and naturalism. I don't buy the idea that another actor would necessarily play it WAAAAY over the top either...although given the highly incestuous nature of the comedy mafia these days, it's very difficult at the moment to imagine an alternative (and that's not a good sign).

As for Oliver Chris, he's another one of those post-Office space wasters who's only capable of 'acting' on that one level (a la just about everyone in The Office bar Crook). Did you see the security guard he played in The IT Crowd?

Yeah, wasn't too hard, used Fraps (mainly used for capturing video from games) but works in MPC, then import the .avi int Animation Shop and play around with it. I couldn't get it to sync properly so it looks smoothly looped.  :p
But enough about that! More Green Wing!

Wow that's cool, Faze!

Well I thought this week's episode was a really good one. I liked all the bits that have already been mentioned... Also "Get Bryan. Get Bryan. Get Bryan. GET BRYAN!" etc. and "Don't worry, I'm not your baby!" Also with the gecko shoes - "Double murderer!"

Oh, and the bit at the end about the wooden clogs.

My overall rating:  :laff:

The bit with Lyndon and Harriet was so cute, too. Aww!

The plot's getting interesting now too, huh?

Tonight’s episode was just……..wow, and a bombshell. The Caroline, Mac, Guy and Holly storyline was huge

The Mac and Caroline kiss was very nice and they will make a great couple but it was all ruined when that bitch Holly show Mac their son. I feel sorry for Caroline.

So Caroline might be on a rebound when she kissed Guy and I could lead to even more.we have to fine out next week

Oh yes I love Lyndon and Harriet they make a cute couple

Agreed on Lyndon and Harriet, it's nice to see Olivia Colman (or "Collie" as we know her) get involved in a decent story.

Alan Statham's interview for running for Local Election was hilarious, as was his speech therapy.

Also, the poshest pimp ever on screen.  :laff:
