As you may know video game movies have a shaky past. However, there seems to be quite a few coming out. There is of course Doom (which has lamely been turned into just another zombie movie, from what I've read.) But, there are more. Uwe Boll (the guy who made Alone In The Dark and House Of The Dead), is currently working on five different videogame based movies. He is making Dungeon Siege, Far Cry, Hunter: The Reconing, Postal, and BloodRayne.
What do you think about video game based movies?

Anyway, to answer the thread topic, the only video game movie that I can remember having seen is Resident Evil: Apocalypse.  You can read my review of it here.

Oh, well I was just going on what was written in this month's Computer Gaming World. That's pretty much where I get all my video game information, including the following.

The plot for the Dungeon Seige movie is a farmer named Farmer is out to stop the Krug who have kidnapped his wife and murdered hi son. Cast includes Burt Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Ron Perlman, John Rhys-Davies, Jason Statham, Matthew Lillard, and Clair Forlani.

You know what game would make a good movie? No One Lives Forever.

I just thought of another video game movie that I've seen: Super Mario Brothers.

We need more movies based on video games from the 80s.  I would totally go to see a movie based on Maniac Mansion.

They're just bad ideas in general.  As much as I love video gaming, very, very few video games have quality stories, or concepts that could support a quality film. Novels frequently work as movies because they have actual developed storylines, characters and ideas to base the movies on.  Not so with pretty much any video game. Once the video game medium evolves enough that we frequently have quality stories in games, sure, game movies might work, but we're nowhere near that stage yet.

And Super Mario Bros. was horrible.  Goes without saying.

And though I loved it, Tomb Raider wasn't a fav of the critics. If I'm not mistaken it was really only a fav of the fans of the game. Bummer   :(.

I've already done the whole "you know what I'm going to say here" bit, so I'll just come out and say Metal Gear (Solid).  In fact, I believe the project is in the works, thanks in large part to the tremendous street cred of VA David Hayter, who has been on Marvel's payroll for several of their recent and upcoming films.

This is a set of games that could be utterly kickass movies with just a bit of trimming.  Personally, I'll go and see it no matter how lame it ends up looking.  As long as Kurt Russell gets a cameo, of course.

Resident Evil, the first one, wasn't that bad.
The second was ok too, but for some reason the fighting-in-the-big-city-with-huge-monsters seemed more like a long Xena episode in terms of production values. It was a nice DVD movie, nothing more.

I've seen the trailer of Doom and was horrified to find out there is some parts in "first person shooter view" with the gun at the side and everything. I mean, WTF?

You forgot to mention other projects such as Silent Hill (sounds like its going to be a snoozer horror movie, just like the game) and ofcourse, Halo.
I'm a huge Halo fan and I'm kinda worried about that one...
With all do respect, the Halo universe isn't large enough to sustain it's own movie... lets up the salary that Microsoft paid the writer of the movie's script (1 million dollars) will be worth it.

Isn't Uwe Boll universally despised among the gaming community?

Nobody's mentioned Wing Commander yet.

@Idan: You kidding me, right?  Not enough to sustain a movie?  You mean to tell me you can't squeeze two hours of entertainment out of the three books and two games?  The backstory of the SPARTAN project, the mystery of the Forerunners, the Covenant structure and hierarchy, space battles, land battles, and genuine space zombie fun?

As long as they are made by that guy they are doomed to be a POS.
Dungeon Siege? They are turning that into a movie? Oh my.   :evillaugh:

If you think about it, Alien vs. Predator is also a videogame based movie. Although the comics came first, it was the sales of the videogames that convinced FOX to give the go-ahead to do this one.

I think that if it could be pulled off, then a Grim Fandango film would be pretty sweet, although given it's setting it might turn into one of those Sky Captain affairs, with everything done in CGI and that could turn out either very bad or rather good. It wouldn't take too much to convert it into a film either and given how much it refers to other classic noir films, it would porbably be well received by serious film fans. However given the recent spate of very poor video game films, I'd rather wait until a talented director took some interest in the project (wanting to make it because the game genuinely grabbed him, rather than because the film studio just wants him to make money). If they did do a film, I also hope that they'd keep the soundtrack from the game, or at least hire the same guy to do a new one. If they didn't, then I can't imagine any film adaptation having an atmosphere anywhere near as immersive as the game.

The AVP movie is allright not exactly the best one of the best movies around. one thing paul anderson is good at is making action scenes but when it comes to character development he fails

Good for you.

Still, try to stay ontopic.

Nevertheless, welcome to PEEL.   :)

Aside from that, IMHO most movies based on videogames are basically an attempt to make more cash of a somehow successful title.

I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. That other movie; Final Fantasy - The spirits within, was a bit of a letdown, but this new one is actualy a continuation of the FFVII story. Pictures and trailers if seen so-far are looking really good.

Execuse me for not being into merchandizing. Besides, Halo itself isn't exactly advertised in Israel... which is understandable since X-box has never been officially released in this pirating-loving country.

I think I only saw one which is Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001). I think the story is so… so Maybe because I saw too many Asian way of telling stories but I still think it is a good movie and I mainly praise this movie for the technological achievement of animation.

Man, that one's so great.. everytime I watch it I just chuckle my brains out. Talk about so bad it's good. Nothing at all to do with the games except a few names, of course. And did the Rapier look like an F-86 with its wings chopped off anyway?

"NOW! Give them a broadside!!", coming from the  same actor who plays the sub commander in Das Boot is just so goddamn hilarious...  :laff:

I'll play you as soon as I get my Xbox back. You certainly are a newb in the storyline which is what I meant in the first place. I doubt you even know for sure if Master Chief is male or not or even Master Chief's name.

Your shots are cheaper than your mom, and that is a hard earned position!   :)

As I said, the X-box isn't even officially sold here. Obviously they won't market other merchandises...
And I'm not searching for Halo stuff online. Just waiting 2 weeks for all kind of crap to get here from the US is annoying no matter how cheap it is.

Bungie.org has a few too many wacko theories amongst the good ones and a few too many people take what is commonly known about the story and tell people that it's their "brand new theory".
