Fry's my favorite character. I don't think I like him romantically like some people here it seems >.>, but he's a very likable character. I usually find the "idiot" characters annoying, but Fry's flaws are pretty endearing.

I came onto this website all guns blazing with a controversial thread on Fry being a weak character. Some of the responses therein have really made me really rethink this guy, actually he's pretty good and absolutlely essential to the whole shooting match! I think the 'duet' of Fry / Bender is inseperable and very very amusing. Fry also develops alot as  a character in later episodes, the sting and devils hands come to mind in particular where fry actually stands out as a rich character. His follys are amusing too and serve to give these moments were he is more susbstantial greater emphasis!

I see Fry as an appeal to the inner geek. The show, being aimed at geeks (cool kids can kindly ignore my theory), depicts Fry as being a genuinely good guy, who's just misunderstood. I think most of us geeks see ourselves that way, that the reason we don't "fit in" is because we're misunderstood, rather than that we're just socially inept.

Fry is slightly inept though. But I see your point. I don't fit in at my school (however, I don't really label myself as a geek) so I guess having a main character like that is appealing.

Then you must have run into and unrelated blockade because Spetznaz doesn't do blockades. Their spec ops like the Navy Seals or Army Rangers. So you'd be dead five times over before you hit the ground. Since you still alive that means they must have found something better to do.
