Fry and Leela's names

Why is it Fry and Leela always go by their last names?  It's only in a few episodes they were called "Phillip" and "Turonga".

2) TURANGA IS MAYBE LEELA´S FIRST NAME BUT IT´S ACTUALLY SURNAME AND IT WAS CONFIRMED ON TV, MUTANTS HAVE SURNAMES FIRST! HOW LONG WILL TAKEUNTILL PEOPLE WILL FINALLY GET THIS!!!

Wow, it's like Rhodan was waiting forever for someone to bring it up so he could say that! That avatar is very appropriate..
In anime, it seems like many characters who want to maintain a level of distance and propriety between them refer to eachother with surnames. This might be the case with two suppressed lovers. First names are for buddies and those in serious relationships. I dunno.. I guess you could think of it that way, being that they have a dysfunctional relationship..

Well what's wrong with having you last name as your "main" name. Besdies, Turonga is unusual. But Nothing is wrong with that. Oh god don't throw a fit! Who cares! This is redundant!

You know the fact that people are being jack asses doesn't bother me as much as people misspelling her name. Well, I take that back, I see one has been paying attention. Though he said it in a profoundly stupid way.

Turanga Leela. Surname does go first for mutants Now for a refreshing challenge, anyone wanna guess what Leela's middle name is? Taking bets now. (Note: Unfortunately, save for Fry, Farnsworth, and possibly Cubert, no one else seems to mention their middle intial)

So, I´am sorry just bad mood connected with fact that I´am seriese´s nerd. Anyway it actually doesn´t sound like good idea from authors (that about Leela´s name) since years from LH, people are still confused...
About her middle name- it´s possible that mutants don´´t have middle names which is supported by that on her card in LH is just "Hello, Turanga Leela".

Actually lokking under Futurama at IMDb.com, Leela doesn't have a middle name that we know of. When it shows the cast of the crew all it said was Turanga (yes that's correct now.) Leela. Odd no?

i always figured her little bracelet had her initials on it. And since there's three letters i would assume she has a middle name. She might not know that she does, but i'm sure her parents thought of one. They probably had names chosen before she was born.

The bracelet haven't been translated because it's written in AL3. Though the general consensus is that the three symbols is Leela's initials.

Yeah, there where two complete languages, but there have been signs and symbols (like Leela's bracelet) that didn't belong to either AL1 or AL2. The logical solution is they're part of a third alien language the producers intended to introduce later on. David hints at a possible AL3 in the commentaries.

I've never seen a show that was brought back after it was cancled though. The only way we could see a fresh episode, would be to have a Futurama Reuion. But we'd have to wait like 5-10 years

i thought it was an exact match of Leela's. It looked that way in the scene were Leela compares the two after snatching it from her mom.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same symbols. The I guess i can't be Leela's initials, unless Munda kept an exact copy complete with Leela's initials to remember her by. Or maybe it just says "Turanga", ie. their family name.

Hmmm, three symbols, Tu-ran-ga, maybe AL3 would've been based on word-partitions.
