Am I the only one who notices certain... similarities between these two characters?

Philip Fry: Displaced in time, likes pizza, beer, and cartoons, lusts after a tough chick with a ponytail, hangs out with a slutty babe with hair that sticks out and an alien who's constantly hungry

John Crichton (of TV's Farscape): Displaced in space, likes pizza, beer, and cartoons, lusts after a tough chick with a ponytail, hangs out with a slutty babe with hair that sticks out and an alien with multiple stomachs.

Coincidence... or is it?

Ive never seen Farscape, but so what if Zoidy is always hungry? He usually gets 1 meal a week! That would make anybody hungry.

Nah, I don't see that much similarities between the two characters.

Crichton is too strong and too hero-like to be like Fry.

E.g. Fry hasn't almost any muscles, but look at Crichton...quite a huge guy. And Fry is not the supermacho-type, while Crichton seems to think about nothing but sex and "where the heck am I?"

I dunno, I think there's a lot of "Sex/where the hell am I" going through Fry's head...

Sure, but Fry knows at least that he is a) in the future and b) in New New York or some dangerous alien planet. And has he ever had some serious sex (apart from with Amy)?    :p

Yep. There was the 21st century girl, and Morgan, and Umbrielle (well, he tried...), and Michelle (presumably), and Liubot...

Hmmm okay. Got me at the balls.

But Fry is just not the guy that saves the world three times a day, still smiles and gets the girl and the money at the end.

He might have saved the world sometimes, but there's one fact that makes him and Crichton completely different.

He's just...the delivery boy.

Well, I'm just pointin' out the similarities. Hmm... maybe I'll stick to comparing Amy to Chiana.

I wonder what would happen...  :flirt:   :flirt:   :flirt:

Remember if you are in the UK Farscape returns to BBC2 on Monday at 6:45. I must remember to see if I think Chiana looks like Amy, except for her colour     :p

Make sure of it. It's like Voyager, except without the part where it sucks.

Is Farscape the show on SciFi?  No, wait...I'm thinking of Lexx.  Um...anybody with any idea of channels on the west coast know when Farscape airs?  I've never seen it, but Fry and Crichton sound a lot alike.  I'm also surprised that Kryten would refer to Amy as "slutty".  I thought she was "liberated".  :p

Yep, Farscape's on Sci-Fi, right before Lexx. Farscape's the one with a living ship, a helium-farting muppet, and a Hassidic Klingon (that's the vibe I get from D'argo). And I have accepted Amy's ex-sluttiness. That's why I love her!

Lexx is also a living ship, but the show isn't as good as Farscape.

All my intrest in Lexx subsided while watching MST.  I saw a commercial where some blonde chick said bluntly, "I want to bring you into the land of ultimate sexual fulfillment."  Does not sound like a chick show.  And to be completely honest, that commercial made me want to vomit.  :puke:

I think Aeryn and Leela much more similar.
1)  both orphans
2)  both can really kick ass
3)  both have ponytails
4)  There lives change after meeting our heroes Aeryn is forced to leave the Peacekeepers and Leela quits her job.
5)  They have problems/resevations about showing their feelings for our heroes.
6)  They are both hot alien chicks (yeah Leela is a mutant but she was alien to us up until the end).

I don't think that Futurama and Farscape have THAT much in common...
I mean, sure- they both do start with an F, but still...   ;)
Did you ever realize that ALL the SciFi-stuff is very much the same? It's the same as with cartoons: You take a few characters, give them funny names, make two of them love and another one jealous.... I mean, come on! Good stories don't grow on trees, righT?

*whistles* Nice bump.  Both of them.

Anyway, I always thought the only real similarities (and I noticed these early on in watching syndicated Futurama) were between Fry-Crichton and Leela-Aeryn.  This was Kryten's (ironic on two counts, eh?) original point.

Doubters look at it this way: John Crichton is what Fry always wanted to be - an astronaut, smart, good-looking, on an adventure in outer space, and teaching alien women how to love.  They also both have most of the traits of generic American slobs, Crichton just rose mostly above them.
If you watch both shows, you see that Aeryn is basically Leela with a more military attitude and a sexy accent.
And then there's the whole semi-requitted love thing.

But stylistically, and on a lot of episode plots, I agree that Futurama is Red Dwarf, just American and sans laugh track.

Aww...now I miss Farscape and Futurama.  On the plus side, I think RD is on PBS this month...

^^Too bad. Hey, remember hobojobo in Futurama Trivia Champion I? He thought he wouldn't come back, but he did.
And this game was only at an irregular pace because I had Thanksgiving Break, so I apologize. Now that I have to go back to school, it'll be on a more regular pace. (Kind of like the last few rounds of the first game, if you remember.) You know, starting at 4:00p.m.[pst]. (pacific standard time). Then a new question will HAVE to be posted every 1-2 hours, since there are an unlimited amount of players that can reply. Last question would be from 9:00p.m.-10:00p.m.[pst].
So don't get your hopes down. (I'd e-mail you, but you don't have an e-mail address.) So I'll copy & paste this message to any other thread I see you post in, in hopes that you'll see this message. Unless you read this message in this thread. Then I won't be copying and pasting this message in the threads you post in.

*In regards to this thread. Who said Farscape is better than Futurama? When I first saw it, it felt like hours until it finally finished. I only did it to make the guy who introduced it to me happy, since he seemed to like it. So Futurama is definetely better than Farscape. (But that's just my opinion.)*

Talk about a blast from the past!

Here are some more Futurama/Farscape similarities, with spoilers from Bender's Big Score:

Both Fry and Chrichton unwittingly have the secret to saving the universe. (John with wormhole knowledge secretly placed in his brain by ancient aliens, and Fry with brain-waves that resist the effects of giant alien brains.)

Both Futurama and Farscape lasted four seasons, and were cancelled way before they should've. And then they were both brought with epic quadruple-length follow-ups that both referenced just about every previous episode, making it fun for fans but disappointingly hard for new viewers to get excited over it. (Although I think Futurama fared a little better, here.)
