Am I the only one who notices certain... similarities between these two characters?
Philip Fry: Displaced in time, likes pizza, beer, and cartoons, lusts after a tough chick with a ponytail, hangs out with a slutty babe with hair that sticks out and an alien who's constantly hungry
John Crichton (of TV's Farscape): Displaced in space, likes pizza, beer, and cartoons, lusts after a tough chick with a ponytail, hangs out with a slutty babe with hair that sticks out and an alien with multiple stomachs.
Coincidence... or is it?

I don't think that Futurama and Farscape have THAT much in common... I mean, sure- they both do start with an F, but still... Did you ever realize that ALL the SciFi-stuff is very much the same? It's the same as with cartoons: You take a few characters, give them funny names, make two of them love and another one jealous.... I mean, come on! Good stories don't grow on trees, righT?

*whistles* Nice bump. Both of them.
Anyway, I always thought the only real similarities (and I noticed these early on in watching syndicated Futurama) were between Fry-Crichton and Leela-Aeryn. This was Kryten's (ironic on two counts, eh?) original point.
Doubters look at it this way: John Crichton is what Fry always wanted to be - an astronaut, smart, good-looking, on an adventure in outer space, and teaching alien women how to love. They also both have most of the traits of generic American slobs, Crichton just rose mostly above them. If you watch both shows, you see that Aeryn is basically Leela with a more military attitude and a sexy accent. And then there's the whole semi-requitted love thing.
But stylistically, and on a lot of episode plots, I agree that Futurama is Red Dwarf, just American and sans laugh track.
Aww...now I miss Farscape and Futurama. On the plus side, I think RD is on PBS this month...

^^Too bad. Hey, remember hobojobo in Futurama Trivia Champion I? He thought he wouldn't come back, but he did. And this game was only at an irregular pace because I had Thanksgiving Break, so I apologize. Now that I have to go back to school, it'll be on a more regular pace. (Kind of like the last few rounds of the first game, if you remember.) You know, starting at 4:00p.m.[pst]. (pacific standard time). Then a new question will HAVE to be posted every 1-2 hours, since there are an unlimited amount of players that can reply. Last question would be from 9:00p.m.-10:00p.m.[pst]. So don't get your hopes down. (I'd e-mail you, but you don't have an e-mail address.) So I'll copy & paste this message to any other thread I see you post in, in hopes that you'll see this message. Unless you read this message in this thread. Then I won't be copying and pasting this message in the threads you post in.
*In regards to this thread. Who said Farscape is better than Futurama? When I first saw it, it felt like hours until it finally finished. I only did it to make the guy who introduced it to me happy, since he seemed to like it. So Futurama is definetely better than Farscape. (But that's just my opinion.)*

Talk about a blast from the past! Here are some more Futurama/Farscape similarities, with spoilers from Bender's Big Score: Aeryn fell in love with a "double" of Chrichton, who later tragically died. Leela fell in love with Lars, a double of Fry who later tragically died. Both Fry and Chrichton unwittingly have the secret to saving the universe. (John with wormhole knowledge secretly placed in his brain by ancient aliens, and Fry with brain-waves that resist the effects of giant alien brains.) Both Futurama and Farscape lasted four seasons, and were cancelled way before they should've. And then they were both brought with epic quadruple-length follow-ups that both referenced just about every previous episode, making it fun for fans but disappointingly hard for new viewers to get excited over it. (Although I think Futurama fared a little better, here.)

I often see parallels between the Fry/Leela relationship and the Crichton/Ayren relationship.
