Maybe this was mentioned in some episode, but I can't seem to remember. We know Leela was left at the orphanarium, and nobody could read the note, so who gave her the name? Was it the orphanarium guy? Just something that's been bugging me a little.

That's a good question. Maybe her little bracelet said "Leela" on it.

She had a little nametag saying: "Hi, my name is Turanga Leela" in plain English.

And somehow they knew "Turanga" was her family name and "Leela" was her personal name.

Well, yes, in America, names go First Name Last Name. In China, they go Last Name First Name, but that's not the point.

Consider the fact that Leela's in NNY... that guy would just assume she's Turanga Leela.

Haven't they adressed Leela's parents as Mr. and Mrs. Leela? And this little quote from The Problem With Popplers (im trying to do this from memory):

Fry: Turanga!?
Amy: That's her name, Phillip.
Bender: *spits out beer* Phillip!?

In "Less Than Hero" Leela address a letter to her parents by writing "Turanga Morris & Munda" on it.

I guess Leela just prefered being called Leela (much like Fry prefers Fry).

It's like on Red Dwarf, Dave Lister and Arnold J. Rimmer referred to each other as Lister and Rimmer.

When you hear them being called by their last names all the time, you get used to it. It would be weird calling Fry "Phillip" all the time, when you think about it. His character just seems like a "Fry".

Ah yes, I forgot about that nametag. So I'm still confused, is Leela her first name or last?

Leela's her last name... or so we think.

No you silly people, Turanga is a surname.  Leela is the given name, otherwise everyone in her family would have the same first name....

Say what, Mango? A lot of people tend to keep their last names until they're married (for girls). I'm going to make a bet their family's full names are:

Morris Leela, Munda Leela, and Turanga Leela.

They have already established in the show that their names are Turanga Morris, Turanga Munda, and Turanga Leela. It was stated in Less than Heros, and Matt Graining even said it at one point.

Oh... well, I missed that episode, so I'm sorry for whatever confusion I caused.

So if Fry and Leela got married (unless she kept her maiden name), her name would become Fry Leela?

I think it would be Leela Fry if they got married...

Tell me if I'm wrong. The name Turanga Leela is like a tribal-type thing. Like if there's a tribe called the... I dont know, "parakeets", then one of the tribespeople would be named "Parakeet Joe".

Turanga Leela, Morris, and Munda are all "Turanga"s. All we have to do now is ask David C. and Matt G. where the name Turanga came from.

It came from "Turangalila," a symphony by Olivier Messiæn.

If they got married, maybe they'd both change their names, and become Turanga Philip Fry and Turanga Leela Fry.  Or would that be too weird?  They'd probably just leave the names as they are.
