Um, Life in Hell isn't a cartoon.  It's a comic strip.

I think he's talking about those Bender-vision-y special features menus. But Nibbler's age is the only one that's listed. 3,277.

Wait, didn't Nibbler say that he was around at the beginning of the universe? How is he only 3,277?

No, Nibbler said that his race was around at the beginning of the universe.  He never said that he personally was that old.

Here's how I pictured it:

Fry: 28/29
Leela: 27/28
Bender head: 1004
Bender body: 4
Dr. Zoidberg: 45
Hermes: 43
Farnsworth: 165
Amy: 19-20

Maybe we'll never know they're real ages, after all in Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles when they all got out of the Fountain of Aging Leela chirped, "I might be a few years younger!"  That might be possible as well!

I would say the Fry and Leela are about 28 but due the events of Teenage Mutant Leelas Hurdles they would be physically about 26

I think he was just being mean. I doubt he'd go out of his way to find out her age to begin with.

Age is subjective, especially after TKOS and TMLH.  However, here's what we know about birthdates:

Fry: 1975
I believe this was mentioned in TLOTF, but I could be mistaken.

Bender: 2998
He's three years old in 3001 (Season 3 before the Xmas episode.)

Leela: between 2974 and 2984
She was born "20-something years ago" in LH, which we have determined to be in either in 3003 or 3004.  Personally, I'd support 2974 or 2975, having her slightly older (biologically) than Fry.

Professor Farnsworth: 2841
He turned 160 in 3001 (Season 2 after the Xmas episode.)

Cubert Farnsworth: Apparently neither he nor Dwight ages, since they are constantly 12, but going by ACOMO, he'd have been created in 2989.

Everyone else, as far as I know, is just guesswork.

According to Futurama Comics #20, Hermes was born in 2959, thus making him 40 as of the pilot episode. He would have turned 41 at some point in 3000, and by 3004 would have been 44/45 depending on when his birthday is.

Who is taller, Fry or Leela?

Their heights are set just perfectly so that Fry and Leela can look eye-to-eye most of the time, yet Leela can still manage to easily put her head on his shoulder.

You and I are apparently thinking of the same scene in Why of Fry, Xanfor, the one that prompted my question:

Here he's a few inches taller, even though she's in high heels!  I had the impression in most other episodes they were more evenly matched in height, but can't remember an example.  Perhaps he's just too surprised to slouch in this scene.

Love Fry's expression, by the way.    :)

In the comic book issue where Fry, Leela, and Bender get small and got into bottles, Leela says she and Fry are over 30.

It was my understanding that Leela was intended to be older than Fry, when the series began.  However, because of the relationship between them, they wanted to make their ages closer.  I still picture Leela as being at least 2 years older than Fry.  I don't think the age difference hurts their relationship at all, if anything it makes it more interesting.

I always thought that since Leela accepted the flower happily, it gave him the confidence to stand up straight and not slouch. And then she put her head on his shoulder, so that made him even happier... After all, that is a sign of trust, isn't it, girls?

In "My Three Suns", Leela states Fry as being 25 years old.

Paraphrasing:

Doesn't anybody think that it's suspicious that a 25 year old delivery boy can waltz in, drink the emporer and not be killed?"

As for Leela's age, I read somewhere that the original script for the pilot episode had she saying that she was 30 years old with no date for New Years but was modified to bring her age closer to Fry's.

They have always been coy about Leela's true age and I have the feeling that she's the type to find a way to fudge the age meter backwards a few years.  ;)

Well, in Love and Rocket, Leela says : 'blah blah something-I dont wanna die at the age of 25'

At which Bender says, 'unless we hit a time warp, I wouldnt worry about it'

but then again, I havent read this thread really, so this may be way off.

Well, it could be Bender being mean, but also when he's mean there's usualy some truth to it. However, my conviction is that Fry and Leela are roughly the same age, being about 29 by the end of the 4th production season (3003). This would also be about the upper limit for Leela's age, as she's "twenty-something" in Leela's Homeworld, and having her younger than Fry wouldn't really mesh very well with comments like the one above.

"it could be Bender being mean, but also when he's mean there's usualy some truth to it..."

Nice way to put it... sort of like Bender = House before House even existed... except he was born c. 970 years after House. And was manufactured, not born. And is a cartoon. And likewise House is a character in a tv show.

Gah.

Anyway, interesting if true... Any other examples of Bender being mean by telling the truth? Telling Leela she's 'a one-eyed freak with a dead pet' (ISTE) is one, but it's a little basic... anyone got anything more subtle?

It's almost unique in mainstream shows (esp. cartoons), I think, that the adult characters age in Futurama. Wonder if they'll keep it up in the new shows... lovable 20-something losers are funny, but will it work as well if they're in their 30s? Assuming a birthdate of 1975 for Fry and 2975 for Leela, shouldn't they have moved on a little if they set the new shows in c. 3007?

Me, I'd fudge the issue of their ages...

One factor that hasnt been considered in dating all the characters, is that we are talking about a different millenium.
Age judgements have been made in comparison to current standards. It is conceivable due to genetic engineering, sophisticated cosmetic surgery or not forgetting that all scifi classic chestnut radioactive mutation ( im sure there was a nuclear war sometime between when fry was Frozen and unfrozen ). That the characters could either be hundreds of years old or maybe only like 5 0r 6 years old but greatly advanced in development by current standards.

Just a thought.....
