If Fry and Leela don't get together in the final episode their relationship can always be developed in the comics. there have been small hints at their relationship in recent issues, like the ending for issue 12.
Incase anyone wasn't yet read the latest info in the stockroom, the comics are going to take off in a big way now that the show is finished. They aren't going to finish, as some people had initialy feared. Upcoming projects include another Simpsons crossover and a four part time travel themed adventure.

Hey look at me, i'm at the top of the page! Weeeeeeeeeeeee, ha ha ha, weeeeeeeee, oh wait it's not that great actually.

One thing that concerns me, and perhaps this is even more so now that the comic is going to be the only new Futurama outlet (though I admit to never having read it), is that the Leela-Fry semi-romance will continue its push and pull in the same indefinite way as Ranma and Akane in Ranma 1/2.  Anyone familiar with the series will know what I mean.  In fact, a lot of long time Ranma fans ended up hating the show was it went along (it ran for a very long time, both on TV and comics) because their relationship, despite many hints and incidents and revelations, never gets resolved.

There was an aother issue in this thread which I found interesting as well, which as the matter of mutations.  Although its never explicitly stated, one gets the sense that it is verboten that mutants are allowed to live in common society.  This would explain why Leela's parents took the pains to ensure she would be taken for an alien baby rather than a human mutant.

There's certainly a lot of interesting and potentialy dark material to be mined in that fact.  I tend to wonder if it hasn't been picked up in someone's fanfic or other.  In my own conception, I imagine word getting to the PE crew that 3-Ears from the Orphenarium (I'm sure most you know know who I mean) is going to be extradited from the surface world.  Leela would obviously be appalled at the prospect, but coming to her defence would mean revealing her own secret, with undoubtable consequences...

that third ear can be removed fairly easily. All the mutants in the sewer have major mutations that can't be surgecally altered. I doubt they extradite people with slight fixable birth defects.
either way however, that would make one awesome fanfic.

A good episode would be if Nixon discovered that some mutants lived above ground, he then actively begins a law against mutants living above ground.
Leela then admits that she's a mutant to the public. The public don't respect her because of Nixon's law she is then thrown into the sewers with the rest of the mutants.
So on And So fourth would happen then Nixon would die.
