Well then I can sleep easier tonight then. Anyone think that Zap should move into the movie business, give up being a fearless sexy space captain and start a new life? Would make for some...erm...interesting episodes, and also allow a spin off series to begin!!

o dont know about leaving his job though the last time that happened he became a bit of a bum in the episode branigan begin again, well of all the futurama characters i think he is about the only one who could pull off a spin off series

i agree, Zapp along with kif are the only ones that could do a spin-off show. i'll just throw in a zapp quote for no apparent reason.

I don't agree. I think he was slightly over-used in teh series, and I'm a huge fan of his. I really think it would get tiresome if he was around too much. It could be done thoug if his character was changed slightly to make him a little bit more sympathetic - not nicer, just so that you would feel for him in his own series. No series can work if you don't feel for the characters.

I've watched episode 4 /season 1 again and noticed something what maybe someone else noticed already, but since I did not found a thread with that observation, I'll write it here:
On the book "Zapp Brannigan's Big Book of War" is a picture of Zapp. But there his hair is brown!
We all know since the Kiff-pregnancy episode that Zapp's hair is fake (a nice refference to the actor of Captain Kirk), so it is possible that his real hair was brown.

Fascinating: On the book Zapp is also looking a little like this guy from the Simpsons, who was always presenting movies like this "Hi, I'm ???. You may know me from [funny movie title] and [another funny movie title]."

I do not have a framegrab of this guy. Does anyone of you know if he looks really like brown-haired Zapp?

Billy West's voice of Zapp alwasy reminded me of Phil Hartman's voices of Troy Mclure and Lionel Hutz.

They said on the commentary that Zapp is supposed to sound like a "D.J. who loves the sound of his own voice."

I Love Zapp's voice.  i think its one of the best voices Billy West has done on this show

The only regular voice that Billy West does on the show which I do not like is Officer Smitty's.  I think he sounds too much like Fry.

Other than that, I love all the voices.  The Professor, Zoidberg(!!), Fry himself, Zapp . . . they're all so different from eachother.  It took me a long time to figure out that Billy voiced them all.

The guy is just a genius voice actor.

No you are wrong. Zapp is cool for many more than two things.

Billy is pretty damn good. Its very difficult to imagine the same person who does the Professor does Zapp.

Perhaps a Billy shrine is in order. Yes, I could construct it from Uber plastic and have a small waterfall powered by atomic ants...

It would be interesting but sad to hear.

Billy West did a great job as Zapp...he didn't consciously pattern the voice after Phil's performance, according to the DVD commentary, but since he based it on the look of the character and since the character was designed to go with Phil Hartman's talents, some similarity is inevitable.  I admit it's hard to look at a pic of Zapp in his classic "heroic pose" and imagine any other sort of voice.

Zapp's genius is that he has just that teensy little smidge of sympatheticness to him...just enough that you don't want to stamp him out like a cockroach.  The fact that he's ready, willing and able to take advantage of any pity he actually gets keeps him from being TOO sympathetic to laugh at all the time.  The fact that his overweening narcissism is resilient enough to survive any humiliation is something of a virtue as well.  No matter how you squish him, he bounces back in next to no time...like Silly Putty. 

Favorite Zapp lines...hmm, too many to count.  Though "Leela, my precious rock dove!" sticks out in my mind for reasons I can't quite pin down.  Not overtly funny, but just so, y'know, out there...

Here's a thought.  When doesn't Zapp give up on chasing Leela and go after Michelle? 

I've always thought Zapp would be better off with Michelle.  Everybody needs somebody.
