"Son, your name is Yancy, just like your father and my grandfather, and his father . . ."

Notice: Yancy/Philip Fry's grandfather is not named Yancy.  Fry's father skipped over him.

just in case you didn't notice, his father said it was HIS grandfather, as in from his father's side of the family. now fry's mother has the flaming red hair and slicked back hair style as fry, and if you didn't notice his father kinda has the same hair as yancy.

now Enos has red hair like fry, although maybe not as slicked back, hence fry is his grandfather from his mother's side of the family, and minuteman yancy is from his fathers side.

fry is his own grandfather from his mother's side, not his fathers, so the grandfather from there could be named anything, it has no valid effect on the family names thing.

Fry thought that Enos and Mildred were the parents of his father, not his mother.  Remember "Everything's gonna be alright, Dad?"  But Enos was not really his grandfather, so it turns out that Fry is the father of his father.  The previous Yancy was either Mildred's father or Enos's father (he wasn't really related, but everyone thought he was).

This means that the red hair comes from both his mother and his grandfather (himself), though he could have inherited the red hair from her and then passed it on to himself.  His father, his brother Yancy, and Yancy's son don't have red hair but apparently the gene is still there because Farnsworth does (or did).  That's one long-lasting gene.

Isn't red hair a recessive gene, anyway?  And wasn't Mildred's hair about the same color and Fry's dad?

They both had brown hair.  Are we being obsessive?

Yes. And a lot of other things (eye color, for example) are often recessive genes, or "skip generations." (Yes, I know those are slightly different things.)

I don't know if this has anything to do with the origin of the name 'Yancy', but I found this interesting and odd.  Billy West worked on the childrens show 'Doug' some time ago as the main character.  Doug's full name happens to be Douglas 'Doug' Yancy Funny.
