Character Heights

i just noticed while watching 'Cyber House Rules' again that the picture in Bender's arrest record has height on the side. using this i came up with a height for Bender. i then used this height and when Bender stood next to other characters i got their heights and so on...

Bender: 5'9" (without antena)
        6'2" (with antena)
Fry:    5'11" (without hair puff)
        6'1" (with hair puff)
Leela:  6'3"
Amy:    5'4"
Zapp:   6'5"
Kif:    5'5"

has anyone else done this, or are there any comments/corrections/additions?

The heights follow "cartoon logic." For example, there are many times when Bender is seen as much shorter than Fry or Leela.

Ex 1 ("Less Than Hero" )


I think the animators are just shiftless and lazy. But you must not be, for actually finding all this out.

that picture, if u see Benders antena isnt all that much below Leela and Fry. but yes the animators are lazy, i found different heights for the characters too, but i sort of took the best height i thought. definately:
Leela is Taller Than Fry
Zapp is taller than Leela

i only released the Bender height picture last night so i'll keep watching episodes to try and get a good view of them all standing.

This may be nitpicking, but bear in mind that Bender has his legs apart and bent in that picture. The arrest record would have him standing straight I would think.

Now I think about it, all those characters are really tall. Amy's only 2 inches shorter than me!

Those numbers sounds very plausible. Leela is definetely the tallest at Planet Express, and Zapp is even taller.

A reeeeally good example of Fry's height in relation to Farnsworth's is in The Series Has Landed outside Zoidberg's office.

When standing right next to him Fry is towering over the Professor.

Take Leela's boots off and Fry should be the taller, as he doesn't have the extra padding of those soles

weirdly, no matter what shoes Leela has on, whether heels or barefoot, her hight dosn't change. Those boots are almost platform, their huge! but when she takes them off she's still around Fry's height. Oh, and when you were figuring out these heights did you take into account her hair? It's kinda puffy on top.

Also worth noticing is that Bender's legs (and arms) are extendable, so as to escape from Slurm factories and such

it is kinda puffy but i think her head is really basically that shape, except for the bit at the front, which i dont think i counted.

Frys hair however is really puffy above his head.

I still think Leela would be taller than Fry even in barefoot, as witnessed in the laundry scene in "Bendin' In The Wind".

I think Sarge at one point commented on how huge (tall) Leela's head is, even without the hair.

Fry and Leela's heights are very similar, but Leela is slightly taller.

It's quite difficult to get an accurate estimate, because Fry usually slouches and the animation perspective can screw things up.

yeah Fry is always slouching, but Leela stands up tall all the time.

I think as time went on and the animators perfected their technique, Fry got shorter. For example, in "A Head in the Polls":



Clearly here the hair of both Fry and Leela is eliminated, they're both wearing the same kind of shoes and both standing up fairly straight, and Fry is clearly taller.

hehe, "cartoon logic", the evil brother of "script logic".
However, I always had the  impression that Leela is the tallest compared to Bender and Fry.
So, don't mess with my believes!

Yeah, but being a mutant can explain away any of that, especially if they say something like, "Her skull is larger to accommadate her cycloptic eye and enlarged optic nerve."

Bender is definately short, when his arms and legs are at normal positions. Fry, is about the same as Leela I think, and Bender is about the same as the Professor if he were to stand up straight.

Did anyone check the Fox character bios to see if they have heights?

Exactly. I wasn't complaining, just pointing out that the models of Leela call for an unusual tall head.

Incidently this picture show 4 of them lined, and all standing erect.



Look at the eyes and how they align. It's obvious Leela is taller than Fry, and Zoidy and Amy are about the same height.

True, but Fry is wearing his sneakers as well. Another picture, that show both Fry and Leela barefeet. Despite the fact that Fry is placed some 40-50 cm closer to the "camera" (and thus gain a "perspective addition" to his height) Leela still look slightly taller.

the soles on fry's sneakers are not as tall as the soles of leela's boots. but it dosn't really matter anyway cause leela's always the same height whether she's wearing shoes or not.

At the end of "The Why of Fry," Leela is taller than Fry and then suddenly shorter than him in close-up, even though she's wearing high heels.  (They probably did that so it would be easier to show her putting her head on his shoulder.)

Don't they have character boards which show the relative heights of the characters against the main character (Fry)? Leela seems to be the only one not on the Season One/Two sets.

And Bender didn't really look 5'9".  Amy looks about 5'3".  Two inches taller than me. :P

Anyone has a framegrab from "A Flight to remember" when the crew is going in Farnsworth rooms at the ship? There you can see good how tall who is.

Leela is definitely tallest, but she doesn't look 6'3". Maybe 6' at most. It should make Fry like 5'10" w/o his hair puff. And it looks like he matches or slightly exceeds Leela's height with the hair puff.
