Some people don't like Leela because she's a hypocrite . Flaws and undesirable attributes don't make a bad character, however, or an unbelievable one -- just an individual who would have difficulty remaining likable in real life. I assume the difference is between a hypocritical character, and a character becoming the mouthpiece for a writers hypocracy.
Simpsons was accused of a phase when Lisa underwent a grave "creator's pet" treatment. Critics complained that Miss GoodyTwoShoes was always right, everyone else disagreeing with her had to be written an idiot, etc... which lead to Lisa becoming the most hated Simpson character for several viewers.
When that hypocracy was shifted from the story towards the character herself (e.g. the over-zealous self-righteous vegetarian crusade), the character became more likeable again. "A character who is always right" turned into "A character who BELIEVES to be always right".
I do not mind plots like "Leela and the Genestalk", with its "Genetic enigneering is bad, unless I can benefit from it" stance. Not the most noble attitude, but an understandable human flaw.
I disapprove plots like "Raging Bender": Leela was the one dishing out all the time, yet, the message (that she was supposed to be the REAL victim) was rubbed under our nose. In that case, Leela was not a character driven hypocrite, but turned into a nearly remote controlled mouthpiece for Morton's double standards.

It's not like that at all. Very few people despise Leela's character, they just don't like the way the writers handle her. Plus the hate that is there has been there since season 3.

It's not like that at all. Kurt thinks everything's like the Sonic cartoons.

I know KurtPikachu absolutely loathes Leela, and gets off on seeing her get hurt, but I can't think of any other PEELer who actively hates her.

That's a dang lie, and you know it! I'm
pretty sure that was the point.
Really, there's nothing to dislike about Leela. Sure, she's contradictory at times, but the same can be said about almost
everyone . Just because she sometimes breaks her own rules doesn't mean she's a bad character.

Are you saying that Leela should never be made a DiD? Oh you you DiDn't!

I thought Kurt loved Leela so much that he would want to go out of reality and into the Futurama world to fuck her?

I thought Kurt loved Leela so much that he would want to go out of reality and into the Futurama world to fuck her? Are you implying Kurt lives
in reality in the first place? I don't think there's any sufficient evidence to support that.

Sure there's evidence: he's been on Peel since 2003! Oh, wait... I really enjoy the Leela character, despite the occasional jarring things that she does.

Anyway, to settle this whole 'I hate Leela,' thing, lets all agree that Leela is a needed character on the show and we don't really give a damn if you hate her or not. (directed to anyone in general)

Kurt is far more sane than Unmentionable. I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually believe the characters are real, he just doesn't like people stereotyping Leela into a "damsel in distress" just because she's female. It's not because she's female. Did Kurt ever say it's because she's female? Because I'd be disappointed if he did.

The characters' archetypes warp to fit whatever mould is necessary for the story at hand; coupled with the show's constant plays on character pairings and toying with who is good/evil, etc. To get up in arms about Leela being the "damsel in distress" for a portion of one episode (and even then, it was far from a traditional scenario) when WASN'T for the other 99%+ of the show's total duration is just asinine. It's in the show's very nature to play around with its own formula(s).

I like Leela's character overall, but I personally think that Leela is much more of a likable character in the FOX run than she is in the Comedy Central run. In the original episodes, she seems to be somewhat more morally strong. For example, in 'The Birdbot of Ice-Catraz', she had difficulties trying to convince herself to shoot some of the innocent penguins, as she was sticking by her animal protecting morals. Later on, in 'fry am the Eggman', she actually want to eat the unborn Bone Vampire, not caring whatsoever about how cruel that technically is. Another example is how in the original series, Leela completely and entirely resents the fact that she had sex with Zapp, and hopes never to do it again, while in 'In-A-Gadda-De-Leela', she doesn't hesitate for even a minute when she is told to have sex with him again. Also, I've noticed that Leela had a much more prominent personality in the FOX run. She was often very cynical, which made her a much more realistic and enjoyable character, and also gave her a few memorable lines. In the CC run, I felt like she was much less snarky, and much more 'stereotypical girlfriend' - Always thinking about her relationship with Fry, being On-again Off-again, all that kind of stuff - which could make her unlikeable to some. Again, I still like her overall, but I can easily see where Leela haters are coming from.

I hate Leela I hate you! Thankyou.
I can't believe people are still whining and bitching about this.
I already said that maybe 'hate' is too strong a word, and yet many people, months down the line, are still being so damn overly-serious saying things like 'you can't hate a cartoon character'. Someone even said something like 'people who hate leela for messing fry around are probably those who think they deserve more luck with women' or something loosely along those lines. Pretty ridiculous.
I don't like her character. Get over it.

I'd be willing to bet that Jezzem wasn't even remotely serious with that statement. Probably not but was still pretty sillyWell wasn't your temper tantrum pretty silly?
