Why is it that the Planet Express Ship is on personified in the episode "love and rocket" but never in any other episodes?

In that episode it suited the plot to have the ship possess an AI and a mind of its own. In all other episodes it would either get in the way or be more time and effort to make logical than it is worth.

So it's introduced as an upgrade to the ship's software, and removed later because it has minor homicidal tendancies and employees get antsy about co-workers that they do their jobs inside of trying to kill them.

What I find more concerning is that it wasn't a "gender altering dial". It was a "voice altering dial". So that means Bender went out with a man-ship with a female voice.

The voice appears to have been connected to some sort of personality-controlling circuitry (possibly a variable resistor or series of them overlying the intelligence and personality matrix and feeding back into the neural pathways of the electromechanical interface with the positronic brain onto which the software architecture is constructed by means of sub-meson wrangling and extradimensional hypershunts).

Wasn't there another time the ship had a personality and it was a drunk?
Or am I thinking of another show?

You're thinking of the autopilot which, I suppose, could be the same thing sort of.

It's just one of those "one time" things.

Maybe the ship was already mentally unstable, and the crew pretended her alcoholic alternate personality was simply the autopilot to avoid hurting her feelings/enraging her?

And then they realized they could put an end to the charade by simply unplugging her brain.
