I kinda think the opposite. I liked him more as a brat, he was a funnier and stronger character. Now he's toned down and weaker, just more familiar and established, starting to become part of the furniture. He's more like a convenient predictability and not a loose canon charged with potential for excitement...
Agreed. imhO, his initially planned role should have remained : The typical knowitall nerd, pointing out every plothole and illogic.

Definitely Fry. Bender may be the breakout character of the series, but Fry is the one who holds everything together. There's a direct correlation between how much Fry appears in an episode and my enjoyment of said episode. More Fry = more enjoyment.
Early Fry worked the same way as the duo C3PO/R2D2 in the classic Star Wars movies. Though that character does not have to do very much, the "regular guy" is best suited as the centre, so to speak. A theme explored in "LaO", when without Fry everything seemd to fall apart.* As I stated before, Fry held the Trio together, via the "Bender - Best Buddy" and "Leela - Love interest" link. By putting Fry and Leela seemingly together in season 7A, I was hoping the writers did repair the "love intereset link" (that was basically removed from season 6B), and the whole trio character constellation and dynamics would be restored. Yet, as season 7A seems to focus heavily on Leela and Bender by now, removing Fry from the centre can once again destroy the link. *(A theme already explored by Yeates, in "The second coming": "Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold. Though some folks pursue the daring theory Yeates did NOT refer to Futurama in that poem.... )
