When we all first saw Leela, she was a Fate Assignment Officer.  Did she have to earn some kind of degree to become one?  If there's already a thread for this, I'm sorry.

That's a good question.  It doesn't seem like a job that requires a high degree (I mean, Fry could do it easily so...), but Leela has always been the most knowledgable of the "main three" so I would say that she probably did.  Probably no farther than a bachelor's though because of her age, and if she did she would have had to put herself through college, because I doubt that her parents would be able to help her out much monetarily.  Perhaps known aliens (or orphans) get special financial aid.

Given her bragging in Mars University regarding Fry's drop out certificate, I always assumed she have had some sort of high level education.

This sounds like an idea for a future episode, the writers showing where Leela dormed and went to college. Fascinating. :laff:

I don't think you have to do anything since the career chip assigns you. The question is, does it assign you based on your past, or do you get one at an early age that you have to adhere to and take classes for in order to achieve that fate?

You don't get to be a county-certified starship captain without some sort of advanced education, surely?

I don't recall seeing anything about Amy having a career chip, so perhaps they're implanted after a person completes their education.

How do you know when they will complete though? Do you think they get a new one if they attend college/grad school years later?

Dunno, maybe we're looking a bit too deep into the gag and should just enjoy it, like some of the far-out science :)  I love Futurama and can easily suspend my sciency disbelief.  My only regret is that I didn't discover it (and PEEL) years ago.

There is some very subtle humor inherent to the concept of a "county-certified starship captain" which comes off as being very elegant and sophisticated.

Tachyon: Isn't that the point of this whole Re-check scenes forum? All the time I am reading these rolling my eyes saying to myself OMG it's a cartoon!!! But if people want to talk logics of it then I am going to reason it! lol

Hey, Winna.  If you hate Leela, you should get issue #54 of the comic book!  She's going to be a damsel-in-distress in it!  ;)

Does she get saved in the end? That would seem to be more important.
