that driving from the top of the ship was from "Mr. Bean", when Bean buys that chair and drives home sitting in the chair on the top of his car. so fry watched PBS, apparently (Mr. Bean was on PBS late-nights, scary as it sounds)...and Mr. Bean is close to fry in terms of intelligence...kinda weird, ain't it?
