That's right- your wife is from Sverige! Uh, it was from when my friend attended a Folk High school in the early 1990s.  The students in the English program my friend was in self published a booklet of stories and poems.  This poem was in there.  I know I have it in storage somewhere.  I think my friend attended Katrinebergs Folkhogskola in Vessigebro.  My friend did not write the poem, but he sent me the booklet. This was one of those self made- xeroxpublications, so probably is hard to track down. Thanks for the offer, though.

I used to be able to read Swedish... A little bit, a long time ago.

The made-up language of my NationStates country is based on Swedish, but as Archonix has probably noticed, most of the words are stolen verbatim from the IKEA catalog.

Rain is beautiful... it sums up frustration and cleanses the earth and the mind of hatred and anger... dark things happen on stormy nights, restless things.... but ultimately it's just a sign of peace in its chaos.

Who wouldn't want to run in the rain, laughing as they get drenched?  With friends.... with family.

@Xanfor- that sounds pretty cool.  I know the Swedes would be tickled that you used their language as the base for your NationStates language.  As for IKEA- ya gotta love their names.  I think it is very EKTORP and wonderfully LEKSVIK that you incorporate NORREBO in this IDREDA mode.

@Winna- your words about rain are very moving.  I like rainy days myself and do not find them depressing (unless, of course, a flood is imminent :-))  Rain is cleansing but it also has a beautiful rhythm to it. And after it stops and the world is green again, who can ever dispute that miracles do not still happen in this world?

Ahhh, IKEA. Haven't been there in quite awhile actually since they bulldozed it.

Robot: "Enjoy your affordable Swedish crap."

Soon followed by.

IKEA may be many things, but it's also the only place I can get lake vattern svensk vodka and those incredible sweet oat biscuits...

IKEA sells vodka?  I must be missing out on something....

As far as rain goes... I feel more alive when it's raining, when it's storming.  The world itself seems different when dark clouds, lightning, and water paint the heavens... I like wet streets... walking along on cool pavement and grass...

It stormed nicely today... driving to work was an odyssey of imagination, and I felt calm and collected.

Screw your Ikea. You want the Scandinavian experience, come to Door County, Wisconsin - the little peninsula that juts out - which consists of a collection of small towns originally founded by Norwegian, Swedish and Danish settlers. Among other things, there's a Swedish restaurant with goats grazing on a grass roof.

Also, it often thunderstorms there at night in the summer. Sometimes I would sit on the porch of the hotel and watch the rain drip off the pine trees.

Winna your rain poetry is beautifull, if i was a woman I would want to have your babies!

We tend to get a lot of really bland rain in Scotland, just continuous, not very heavy but persistent rain. That kind of rain is totally uninspiring. I love the kind of dramatic rainfall winna speaks of, particularly if there is thunder and lightning involved, again quite a rairity over here.

Heavy rain is amazing after a hot humid (tense) day.

This is way of topic now, unless we include Fry sheltering leela in such a storm, leela in rain drenched tank top, nipples hardened in the cool rain...OK i've said enough!

Edit: Can one of the artist peelers put this image into reality? Seriously imagine it has been a very tense day at PE, very hot and humid, there has been a lot of fighting, and leela receives some bad news, and runs off into the stormy rain, frys goes after her to comfort her. They stand drenched in the cool, cleansing storm rain, Fry holds her tight....

Off I go!

Nice job, Archonix!  I like the coloring, too.  I forgot about the food you can get IKEA.  I like their coffee and the oatcakes and the lingonberry gloop. I don't think you can buy Vodka in the US stores.

@km73- Door County rocks!  I went to Tourism Management grad school at the University of Wisconsin Stout and I loved traveling around Wisconsin.  Door County, The Apostle Islands, it is an amazing state.  And, yes, there is a lot Nordic stuff there since many Norwegians, Swedes, Danes and Finns settled in Wisconsin.  Menomonie, where I lived, was very Norwegian with Lefse sold at the supermarkets.  Isn't Door County where they have that Norwegian fish boil in the summer?  That is such a hoot!

@gaschief-  Gotta get back on topic.  I can try this one out, too.  I will get back to you on that.

Cool, you've been there? And you've lived here? Yes, Door County has tons of fish boils all summer long, it's a trademark I suppose; but I mainly love it for its authentic atmosphere and lack of chains - there are no fast-food places, department stores, malls, etc. Everything is independent and locally owned. There are lots of rustic houses and hotels and a nice waterfront... Riding a bike there is awesome - lovely roads and at least a couple of state parks, one is called Peninsula State Park. Also you can take a ferry out to a tiny island and see all sorts of Scandinavian-style architecture. ...Aaand I'll stop now, but it's not like this thread is ever on topic anyway.

Oh, this thread is ALWAYS on topic (depending how you define on topic).  Yes, I have been to Door County. I lived in Dunn County in Western Wisconsin.   Wisconsin is one of the highest under-rated states for tourism.

And @Gaschief, my rain picture, as promised (done quickly during lunch)- Philip J Fry, Turanga Leela and a broken umbrella.

I love love love the art people have produced based on this.  Sooo cute.  I'm really hoping for a scene from canon like this... the closest thing we have is probably...

Is this when Fry was protesting about the fossilised seymour?

I wonder if the lack of rain was deliberate, perhaps they had weather control in the future, the place didn't look plagued with drought.

Oh, my, I bow down in worship to your wonderful skills... love how you have shown the down to earth side of both Fry and Leela... and the sexy side.  Don't know if you have read the works of the sci fri priest Andrew Greeley, but you do him justice there when he writes that really good men admire the female figure but at the same time want to protect the lady in question and strive to protect her from abusive guys so they shelter her by covering her up from bad guys who would hurt her but they still admire her feminine beauty in a lusty but yet protecting and respectful way. As he puts it in his Celtic way from the lady's point of view "You  did not ogle me like I was a slave on the auction block, even though all the other guys did.  Instead you ignored the slave block auction and took off your jacket and covered my nakedness and hugged me as a friend.. you cherished me as a person and not as an object and you wanted me to be a real person.. and you made me realize I was beautiful in spite of what all the others said.. how could I not fall in love with you-- but you still had better stand by what you promise.  I would do that for you, but you have to do that for me, too.. "

Yuh, and I double posted, dammit! I did not mean to do that.   The mission was Leela would run out on bad news and both were bare foot, so Fry would chase her out into the rain to comfort her with an umbrella that did not work, so they both got sopping wet, but he maybe convinced her in his goofy way to enjoy the moment and appreciate the rain.  So she gave in and did that, and she was able to vent her anger with a good friend who loved her... so there they are, loving the moment in the rain   And, yes, white tank tops and white T shirts do reveal all when wet, but this moment is based on Fry comforting Leela in a bad spot so the focus is on their allure as friends... which I hope becomes something more in the future, but right now they are very, very good friends.  Leela needs Fry as a friend, but somewhere down the road I think there will come a day when he will be the one who needs her to stand by him... hope that happens in the Futurama movies.

Haven't read Greeley, but I like the way he thinks.

My own writing is slightly more progressive in that the female protagonists routinely beat the living fuck out of people right alongside their male counterparts. They're not always in need of protection.
